It is. But one thing, even if your comment doesn’t show up immediately after you posted it, it usually is there. The page just takes a bit of time to process. Usually reposting is unnecessary for that reason. And since we can’t remove these, it’s worth knowing in the future. Not to worry though, we’ve all made mistakes!
What do you guys think of this? Should I keep doing it?
“We’ll be sailing into storms?” Alinua cries.
We’d be doing that anyway!” Erin shouts. “Weather happens!
“And with all this worrying,” he continues, “you’re neglecting one crucial factor. You have me!
“I can answer any question you have about the archaeology and wildlife of Helm, and a dozen questions you don’t have.
He continues to Alinua, “You and I are more than up to the task of providing healing, magical or otherwise, to any of our allies that need it.
“And by now, I feel very secure in declaring that I am an expert at defusing stormy weather!
“By now, I…” Here he falters, looking down towards the ground. “I hoped you trusted me to know what I was doing.”
Kendal puts a hand on Erin’s shoulder.
“I trust you.” He says. “But I also think you’re desperate to be rid of the Dragon. And desperation… it can push you into shortcuts you shouldn’t take.”
As he says this last sentence, we catch Alinua staring at his sword dangling at his side.
Erin – “I hoped you trusted me to know what I was doing”
Chapter 19 Erin – “this ancient ruins site is completely deserted. I’ve gone over every inch”
Chapter 16-17 Erin – “don’t worry, tynan’s basically a solved problem if I keep fireballing him”
Chapter 12 Erin – “zuurith will be safe for all of you because of my position of privilege”
and so on. He forgets that trust is earned by making decisions that don’t consistently end with everyone currently in the room being in mortal danger.
I mean that’s not totally fair. Most of Erin’s screw ups have been him working on false or incorrect information without any indication that he was wrong about it. With the explicit exception of Tynan, all of Erin’s plans have been downright foolproof, up untill the plot threw a massive curveball he couldn’t have possibly forseen into the plan. Which is where Hubris boy begins to hubris all over the place.
I think they should be listening to Tess, the pragmatic, seasoned traveler. The point is, the longer they wait, the worse the storms will get.
On the other hand, we still need som scenes of the rest of them getting out and, oh, gathering wildflowers. (Now has image of Erin with a daisy behind his ear.)
Plus, they have to wait around until they’re forced to make a desperate eleventh hour dash. It’s fantasy. I don’t make the rules. I think Tolkien did….
YES. Listen to Tess. Go now while the weather is on your side, while voidy is dormant and manageable. Better to go now while there’s time rather than rush later when the storms are stronger, the ice melts make the seas more treacherous, and risk having to fight the dragon in those conditions.
Better yet: he has tons of flowers in his hair, the rest of the crew is very surprised, and Tess is behind him chuckling and trying to sneak in another flower.
“We’ll be sailing into storms!” Alinua exclaims.
“Weather happens!” Erin declares,
And trumpets their healing prowess, and his expertise
In defusing stormy airs.
“By now I…” he says downcast, “I hoped you trusted
Me to know what I was doing.”
“I trust you,” Kendal says, but carefully points out
The desperation in Erin brewing.
Red, you stabbed me right in the feelings again! I don’t know which hurts more; that Erin feels his friends don’t trust him, that he REALLY is desperate to get rid of the Dragon (relatable tbh), or that Kendal is speaking from painful experience.
“Short cuts make long delays.” Pippin, The Fellowship of the Ring.
I can honestly, and rather painfully, understand why Erin is needing their trust so badly. Were it not for him wanting to see the archives, most, if not all, of the complications in Zuurith would have never happened. Tynan wouldn’t have targeted Zuurith since he was after Kendal, Tess wouldn’t have gone to Zuurith to help and almost got captured, Kendal wouldn’t have been arrested, and all the injuries the party suffered wouldn’t have happened. In Erin’s mind (which is making this all about him again) they have every reason to doubt his capability and he needs to do something to prove to them he’s reliable.
On the plus side, those last panels are a great show of growth on Kendal’s part. Kendal recognises how Erin’s determination to his mission might end up hurting him, like how we did to himself during the Tynan fight, and sees that it’s wrong and his own actions that day, while successful, were also bad. I’m glad Alinua sees this too judging from the final panel.
Predication for next week: While Falst could tip the balance to a 50/50 split on stay vs. go, I’m not sure he will, nor am I sure that Tess won’t switch sides to the stay camp. Regardless, with all three V.D. counters voting for stay, and Kendal assuring Erin they do trust him, I think stay might win.
That … might actually be the worst option. Instead of choosing to go now and try and beat the worst of the storms, they’ll stay a while and wait for them to quiet down. But, with Shrike and the Paladins both after them, they might be forced into a corner during that wait time, forcing them to set sail when the storms are at their worst. But at least it would give Tarren time to make those adjustments so they can at least face mortal peril comfortably.
I think you’re forgetting the rest of that quote: “Short cuts make long delays, but inns make longer ones.” Of course, Pippin was talking about the lure of beer and ale causing them to stay in the inn longer than necessary, but still, I think that also applies here. Not the beer part, the staying longer than necessary part.
I like the focus on the sword in the last panel, with Kendal’s last statement reminding the audience that Kendal does have experience with desperation.
“weather happens!” is possibly my favourite erin quote to date. his lil angry arm… the hubris in his eyes… oh yes mr ruunaser im sure there will be LOTS of weather happening in your future.
Well, Erin, the problem is that while you do, largely, seem to know what you’re doing on a pure statistical “what should work” level… on a what is happening to us level it seems pretty clear that the entire universe conspires to make you wrong pretty much every time you confidently state anything. At this point I’m about halfway convinced that if Erin went into the Sahara saying that it never rains there he’d get caught in the one superstorm in fifty years. The boy is *jinxed*.
Erin does seem like the type to exploit a jinx that way lol. If he just realized that he WAS jinxed, he’d be unstoppable. Unfortunate then, that he has far too much hubris to ever realize or admit it.
Erin, sweetie, we KNOW you don’t know what you’re doing. And that it scares the hell out of you.
This page took me by surprise, in the best way — I was not expecting the extremely relatable punch in the feels from Erin’s vulnerability (especially his admitting it!), or Kendal’s quiet compassion. Given Erin’s ‘I am no stranger to self-destruction’ comment, and that Kendal is the one who paid most for Erin’s choices in Zuurith, he’s probably the one person who could talk Erin down, and he does it so gently. I love this team.
I was convinced Erin would bully them onto the boat, but now I’m less certain. Hoping this *does* result in a sudden mad dash to leave Argist…and that maybe we’ll get to see more of Tarren before we leave 😀
No I’m with Erin on this one. Best to go now while the storms are still small and manageable. If you wait, they’ll be worse. And his desperation is justified: This thing killed Primordials, took down a god at full power. It could end the world. The sooner it’s gone the better. The Dragon’s been dormant lately, cooperative. Best to move now before it gets restless.
So split the party as a compromise: Falst and Kendal can stay with Alinua to rest and heal. Tess, Dainix, and Erin can make for Helm.
I think Hubris McGee is going to make a break for Helm no matter what, probably with Tess to watch his back.
Like HECK Falst is staying there! To HEAL, no less? Nuh-uh, if they are going on a cool adventure, he’s going too, internal bleeding and all. And don’t forget that Dainix actually wanted to stay, so he’ll probably vote to go just out of spite 🙂
Also, you’re proposing to SPLIT THE PARTY! I’ll let you know that is almost NEVER a good thing! A little hurdle becomes a giant boulder without half the team!
So what this says to me is that they’re planning on staying a while, but that won’t last long when Shrike catches up. She’ll chase them off this continent and onto the next one, and Tarren’s ship is the only thing capable of outrunning them.
Yes Erin providing logical solutions based on his actual experience to how they could solve the problems Alinua and Dainix have with his plan sure sounds like hubris
Everything Erin says is correct he’s a huge nerd who spent his entire life studying and researching magic and the world at large he can also heal people combined with alinua It would take some serious BS to fuck over the party past their combined healing abilities plus Erin literally destroyed the biggest most powerful storm in the world by himself. So yeah less hubris then I have literally seen and done all the reasons I am giving you for going right now
Erin really doesn’t want an ego boost he just has several reasons for going right now and given how much of a nerd he is especially about helm I doubt he didn’t know the weather would get worse leading him to want to leave immediately plus he provides logical solutions to deal with Alinua’s and Dainix’s Concern because there is a very big difference between I’M INVINCIBLE to here are some logical solutions to the problems you brought up

Erin’s hubris is really pulling double duty to cover for his anxieties

Aaawww, poor Erin 🙁
He just wants people to believe in him!
Erin – “I hoped you trusted me to know what I was doing”

Underrated comment 😎

What’s that saying about a plan surviving right until it hits the opponent?

Now I really want to draw that :’)
Yeah they absolutely should trust someone who has spent ages going all over the place 100%
YES. Listen to Tess. Go now while the weather is on your side, while voidy is dormant and manageable. Better to go now while there’s time rather than rush later when the storms are stronger, the ice melts make the seas more treacherous, and risk having to fight the dragon in those conditions.
“Now has image of Erin with a daisy behind his ear” and the absolute SMUGGEST look on his face as per usual.

Hubris and anxiety: a hell of a pair
But shortcuts are risky, even with weather fair

The floof squad really needs a hug.
THE LAST PANEL FELT LIKE APUNCH ON MY STOMACH AAAAAAAA
More like a stab ayyyyy (imsosorrydonthateme)

Actually, Pippin was arguing for them to go “past” the inn. It was Frodo who added the bit about inns making longer delays.
Small correction, “Shortcuts make long delays,” is the entire Pippin quote. “Shortcuts make long delays, but inns make longer ones,” is a Frodo quote
I like the focus on the sword in the last panel, with Kendal’s last statement reminding the audience that Kendal does have experience with desperation.
Awwww, the expressions on their faces! I love this so much … but Kendal makes a very good point.
But … onto the boat anyway, right? ^_^
“weather happens!” is possibly my favourite erin quote to date. his lil angry arm… the hubris in his eyes… oh yes mr ruunaser im sure there will be LOTS of weather happening in your future.
Honestly, YES. I died laughing.
ERIN NOO 😭
I really like this page.
look what you did you gave it anxiety
Bro thinks he’s Reed Timmer lmao
THE ERIN ANGST

The last time Red split the party ended up in everyone being injured, and them needing this rest arc so I doubt doing now is a good idea.
TL;DR: Wait, you’re not ready to prop up my hubris?
HOLY SHIT HE’S LEARNING
Inciting incident?
So what this says to me is that they’re planning on staying a while, but that won’t last long when Shrike catches up. She’ll chase them off this continent and onto the next one, and Tarren’s ship is the only thing capable of outrunning them.
haha this looks like the best arc to knock Erin’s hubris down a peg
Yes Erin providing logical solutions based on his actual experience to how they could solve the problems Alinua and Dainix have with his plan sure sounds like hubris
nice choice of last panel.
Kendal really said, “Don’t believe in yourself, believe in the me that believes in you.”
