For some reason, when I tried to read this page on my phone, it was super stretched out vertically, cutting off shortly below the third panel. Refreshing the page didn’t work. This has happened to other pages. In one such instance, 1.3.6, the strip appeared normally when I tried to read it on my phone at a later date. Does anyone have any idea why this happens?
Also, the Floof Squad is finally going to learn about Tynan. Almost time for the big fight.
I wonder if her grabbing her shoulder here is more of a memory thing, where the sight of lightning brings back the memory of getting struck, or if its the whole “my scars are aching, a storm is coming” thing, where every time anyone else uses lightning magic around her it acts up.
Falst looks how I feel when I have a migraine and somebody’s Doing Things. Erin, have you considered not doing loud flashy stuff next to the guy who took more than the recommended dose of sleeping powder to the face?
he can just Feel it!! Very cool. I guess it’s sensing the lighting magic being super hopped up and angry. the plot’s here!! do any of the characters know who tynan is or how we can do anything though. Because he seemed pretty unbeatable. I hope this is in Caliban’s plan!
This kind of reminds me of Alinua’s magical overload thingies where she’s surrounded by life energy.
@TheHatInTheHat I’m laughing and crying at the same time noooo ??????
I’d like to add to the shipping discussions we were having a few threads ago, by looking at non-canon character interactions from tumblr asks, as well as give my own two cents on each ship.
Kendal+Alinua
Non-canon character interactions: At the airport, Kendal follows Alinua for moral support . . . until he gets distracted by the novelty snowglobes. They both have a habit of wandering away from the group.
When Kendal goes into a haunted house, it compels Alinua to follow him. Then again, if you’re friend walked into a haunted house, you might do the same.
Two cents: Kendal and Alinua are close, and might actually be the two closest characters in the squad. Despite that, a romantic pairing doesn’t really seem like it’s where Red is going for them, especially since Kendal is canonically ace with the romantic orientation of “I’ll figure it out if/when I figure out my romantic orientation”, and it seems like she might also want to avoid him falling in love since that could be framed as him “becoming more human”.
Kendal+Erin
Non-canon character interactions: The reason Kendal went into the haunted house was to follow Erin, but it’s Kendal and Tess also followed Erin, so I don’t really think this is romantic thing.
Two cents: I’m not really feeling this one.
Alinua+Erin
Non-canon character interactions: When playing D&D, Alinua’s character “has a tragic past, one they aren’t proud of; haunted by shades of their dark history, figures from their past can emerge at any time to plothook the party into a new story. Erin (the DM) is delighted by this opportunity and builds a whole suite of NPCs with all kinds of complex connections to this character, who’s most likely a rogue or ranger or something.”
Alinua also sits next to Erin on the plane.
Two cents: Not really feeling this one either.
Kendal+Falst
Non-canon character interactions: Falst sits next to Kendal on the plane.
He also follows him into the haunted house.
Two cents: I can definitely see at least a one-sided crush from Falst’s perspective, especially since he was the only one of the squad to immediately try breaking Kendal out of prison.
Alinua+Falst
Two cents: I think this actually came up at least twice, but unfortunately for those who do ship it, Falst is canonically gay. For the record, Kendal is ace, Alinua is pan, Erin is bi, Falst is gay, Tess is a lesbian, and Dainix is a gay transman.
Erin+Falst
Non-canon character interactions: In D&D, Falst refuses to give his tiefling warlock “any more detail or background than the most generic option on the page, but then at random intervals in the game he’ll bust out an incredible bit of RP that comes out of fuckin nowhere and completely reframes his entire dynamic with the party and any NPCs that might be involved. Erin yes-ands like a champ, but it’s always a scramble to rework this one-shot NPC to have actually been this character’s long-lost foster sibling who turned to piracy after they escaped The Pit together (and what the fuck is The Pit? Erin doesn’t know yet, and Lion-Dude is being ominously vague in-character and won’t give anyone a straight answer other than It’s Bad, but he’s going to have to come up with something to flesh out this wild improv narrative they’re forging because neither of them wants to be the first one to break the yes-and chain because that would be losing and I don’t lose dammit)”.
On a road trip, “Falst called shotgun and has control of the aux cord. Erin is driving and can’t look away from the road enough to stop Falst from blasting mid-2000s nu-metal and anime openings nonstop. Falst doesn’t even like them that much, it’s just fun how much Erin dislikes them. Erin packed really heavy, but half his stuff is electronics that’ll lose their charge in less than a day. Only Falst packed an external battery, and it’s a coin flip whether he’ll tell Erin about it when his phone dies”.
Two cents: This is a popular ship, but I just don’t see it. Erin likes Falst well enough, but Falst does not really like Erin all that much, because Erin is super-privileged, pretty smug, and Falst is pretty sure there’s a silent K at the start of his name. Falst is also fairly quick to see Erin unfavorably. He’s mad at him for letting Kendal stay in prison, and he at least partially holds him responsible for Tess’s situation. They may be in the same friend group, but Falst and Erin are not really friends, much less potential romantic partners. Also, the dynamic they have is much funnier and more interesting.
Alinua+Tess
Non-canon character interactions:
When playing Warhammer, Tess plays Orks and is doing The Accent 100% of the time. Alinua gets super into it. Erin hates it. “If Erin gets too insufferable they might just go off and start playing with the minifigs like they’re little action figures, assigning character motivations and backstory elements that are wildly irrelevant to playing the game Properly”.
On the plane, Alinua is also sitting next to Tess.
Also, there’s this sketch (https://comicaurora.tumblr.com/post/670901926441959424/two-top-tier-characters-handcrafted-for-the-girls), which shows Alinua looking at Tess and Dainix and blushing, a.k.a the first and only time a character in Aurora has shown attraction to someone else. Granted, Alinua may have just been chosen for this because there are two confirmed bi/pan characters and the other one is Tess’s brother, but I’m still counting it.
Two cents: Alinua and Tess haven’t had a lot of interaction, but that last sketch gives them an edge on a lot of other ships: one of the characters actually showing interest in the other. Also them playing with the Warhammer minis is cute.
Kendal+Dainix
Non-canon character interactions: On the road trip, Kendal and Dainix are in the back row quietly talking about something existential and have a dozen in-jokes by the time they arrive.
Two cents: They’re near or at the level of Kendal+Alinua. They’re close, but there’s nothing really suggesting anything more and it doesn’t seem like Kendal is going to be paired up with anyone.
Erin+Dainix
Non-canon character interactions: There isn’t really anything.
Two cents: There isn’t really anything.
Falst+Dainix
Non-canon character interactions: In D&D, Dainix and Falst “sometimes end up spiraling off in completely unplanned RP moments where they’re both fully making up their own backstories as they go”.
At the airport, Dainix is “trying and failing to convince Falst that an entire bag of miniature kit-kats is not the same thing as a meal”. Falst is also sitting next to Dainix on the plane.
Falst also brings him a souvenir from the haunted house: three knives and an entire human femur.
Two cents: While they haven’t interacted on-panel yet, I think this might actually be my favorite Falst ship. They have completely compatible orientations and Falst doesn’t hate the other guy. Also, I like their dynamic from what little we get of it here, though I’m not sure how to describe it, other than Dainix being Falst’s straight man. There’s also the fact that Dainix is the character who is completely honest about his emotions and Falst is the exact opposite (https://comicaurora.tumblr.com/post/658101627621867520/how-much-have-your-characters-evolved-since-their). So there probably is going to be conflict, just not “one character hates the other” conflict.
Conclusion: I don’t feel really strongly about any ships, but for now my favorites are Alinua+Tess and Falst+Dainix.
Somebody:
Is it really Erin doing the zapping, though?
ate house:
Yeah, I noticed too; at first I thought those were just his irises, since they’re naturally a dark purple, but upon inspecting panel 3, his irises looked golden due to reflected light, and that’s not present in panel 6. I see no black wisps coming from his chest, so I think we’re safe from Void Dragon shenanigans for now, but this is still worrying.
Falst being a mood as usual. Watching Erin do some crazy lightning stuff with an expression of “it’s too early for this” even though it’s the afternoon.
Also, I was wondering if you guys noticed Tess’ ears. They’re sort of pointy. This didn’t really register with me at first but last night I was looking over the “extra lore” pages and found that metal-caste don’t have ears like that, but instead like humans. Anyway gorgeous page! Lots of zappyness!
If I had a nickel for every time Erin got shocked by his own lightning magic in a dangerous context, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.
Yes panel 5 is amazing, screaming lightning face and all. I also like the different expressions from the first two; Tess, a rather lighthearted character, looking dead serious; Alinua fascinated, maybe wary too, of what’s happening; and of course Falst still nursing a headache but keeping an eye on things in case.
Ok, it didn’t seem like Erin had to do anything particularly difficult here and the storm’s malevolence is blatantly obvious. So I see no reason why other lightning mages in Zuurith, there’s gotta be at least one, can’t sense the same thing and inform the authorities. Just lends a little more credence to the “Zuurith is suppressing info on Tynan” theory.
@TheUnknownGame Yeah, I too think we’re safe from V.D. but he might still show himself this chapter. He’s also felt that, knows the threat that god poses and wouldn’t want his key to freedom getting killed in the resulting storm. He chose to stay silent to avoid detection at the archive but he might drop the pretences if Erin’s life is in danger.
AGH! ok, i love these guys, but it has just been too long since we’ve seen kendal! i miss the floofy boi, it feels kinda like the plot is forgetting about him ):
@Evil Tree I was also thinking we might see a “you fools, do you have any idea the danger you are in?” moment from VD Walter, which might be fun. If only because Tess doesn’t know yet and her reaction will be priceless…

Hi, I’m the artist that started to follow you on DA about 4 days ago. I don’t if or when you will see this, and I’m sorry for the late reply. I don’t comment on here much (because I’m too socially awkward to live). It’s nice to meet you!
@ Evil Tree Thank you for sharing your observations on Tess! I had not seen anything is the story so far that any else is aware but wait. If you are right I will take my lumps when you type ‘I told you so! 🙂
@evil tree, uh, well it was at that point but I wasn’t talking about the lacrima, just before falst uses the lacrima as a flash bomb Erin attempts to attack him with lightning magic, and falst catches his arm and zaps him
@Averias I will add to the shipping discourse – purely for the chaos that it may unleash.
Tynan + Vash + Zuurith. Enemies-and-lovers triangle, everybody wants to beat the hell out of each other.
@Averias interesting! I didn’t really think about Alinua x Tess before, but now I’m starting to ship it-
I don’t really ship anything else except Erin x Falst (though I do think Falst x Dainix has potential). Normally, I ship a lot of characters when reading something, but with Aurora I’m more, ‘Nah, it’ll be better off with minimal ships’. Comparing this to KOTLC, where practically half my OTPs are from, you can see the difference.
But I’m getting distracted.
That’s my opinion on the ships anyway.
Averias:
Holy sh*t… I didn’t know comments could be that long without hitting a character or word limit.
Evil Tree:
Definitely true on The Void Dragon intervening if Tynan threatens Erin. Makes me think back to Tahraim’s “four world-shaking powers” comment back in chapter 12; the first power has been imprisoned, the second power is restraining herself, and the third and fourth powers could end up wreaking havoc in a possible duel. Overall, things aren’t looking good for Zuurith.
god the problem of binging a webcomic that’s been in the making for TWO WHOLE YEARS is that once you get to the current moment, it sucks to wait like every other person.
@bookfae
To be honest, I don’t really ship anything in Aurora, Alinua+Tess and Falst+Dainix are just my “if I had to choose something” choices.
@TheUnknownGame
Yeah, for a while there I wasn’t sure it would actually go through.
5 gum traumatized me because when I was like 7 and ate whatever candy I found at my cousins’ house, I found some 5 gum, but it was like 2 years old and so, so nasty
Based on panel five
I think the storm god is mad.
A huge shock, I know.
I can’t tell whether he failed spectacularly or whether panel five is Tynan
For some reason, when I tried to read this page on my phone, it was super stretched out vertically, cutting off shortly below the third panel. Refreshing the page didn’t work. Oh dear, Erin no. That 5th frame looks amazing, I love how the lightning looked like a screaming face that’s so coooooool
he can just Feel it!! Very cool. I guess it’s sensing the lighting magic being super hopped up and angry. the plot’s here!! do any of the characters know who tynan is or how we can do anything though. Because he seemed pretty unbeatable. I hope this is in Caliban’s plan!
Watt a shocking turn of events looks like their current situation won’t be lightning up any time soon.
Oh you got a big storm comin’ for you, my boy.
someone finally god damn realised that Tynan like exists
Tynan: “He… He TOUCHED me! The mortal dared to touch me! D:<"
Anyway, the bear's poked now.
Agreed that the 5th panel is cool, but Falst just looks annoyed as heck
That’s one angry storm
Falst looks like he’s having the migraine of the century rn
Erin sure gets electrocuted a lot, poor fella.
@JeckParadox
iirc her right shoulder is where Tess takes lightning magic into her soup, so maybe that’s an actual safety precaution
*soul lmao
This kind of reminds me of Alinua’s magical overload thingies where she’s surrounded by life energy.
@TheHatInTheHat I’m laughing and crying at the same time noooo ??????
If this dosent scream “there is an evil storm god heading your way” then I dont know what will.
Falst: “They don’t pay me enough for this s***”
TL;DR: Days without painful self electrocution reduced back to zero. Oof.
Now I understand why “it’s not that simple anymore”, grown-ups don’t do stupid things they did as kids and this is the reason :d
uh oh erin’s eyes are black in the last panel

On a scale of 1-10, how painful annoying was it to draw all these lightning effects? I’m reminded of the beginning of chapter 12, with all the swirls that ended up taking super long to draw lol
@ Goldfinch
Good spotting, ancients also have pointed ears so it’s safe to assume that Tess has a little non human ancestry.
@leapyeargirl96 Really? When was the third? Do you mean his lightning lacrima that Falst used during their fight?
@ImuyanMangoCat

@evil tree, uh, well it was at that point but I wasn’t talking about the lacrima, just before falst uses the lacrima as a flash bomb Erin attempts to attack him with lightning magic, and falst catches his arm and zaps him
Huh… So that’s bad
Primordial Lightning: YOU PUNK! HOW DARE YOU become someone ELSE’S vessel! Now how am I going to go to the mortal costume party?!
Erin: What, no lightning today? Afraid I might redirect it?
Tynan: Oh, I’ll show you lightning!

Oh hey plot please come in, would you like some tea?

@DisastrousGoth I laughed, so ty for that
@bookfae
To be honest, I don’t really ship anything in Aurora, Alinua+Tess and Falst+Dainix are just my “if I had to choose something” choices.
@TheUnknownGame
Yeah, for a while there I wasn’t sure it would actually go through.
