Finally, someone with self preservation! congrats Dainix, you’ve joined Falst in ascending to the level of Has Common Sense! XD.
I’m going to ask “is this Caliban?” whenever any guard appears to talk with Dainix…
Wonder what the Arenamaster has to say… could this be the beginning of the long-theorized forced arena fight between Dainix & Kendal? It cant be anything about the Floof Squad hijinks bc the Arenamaster would have asked to see Kendal for that. Maybe a suitably vague admonishment of “you better not screw up this fight im about to throw you into or THINGS WILL HAPPEN”…
also, woah first comment! that never happens (mostly bc im not up this early. probably not something to celebrate :p)
I like how oddly friendly the guards are. It makes me care about each individual person in this city. I hope no one’s hurt too bad when the clouds (likely) break and there’s a city wide event.
I just noticed the stuff on Dainnix’s necklace. A (im guessing jade) bead, a stone, a tooth, and another thing. I wonder if that’s just a mindless design choice or if there’s a story behind it
Caliban: Allow me, a normal guard and certainly not your racial deity in disguise, to escort you.
Well one thing that doesn’t seem to have cropped up in their conversations is Kendal’s lack of personhood leading to suicidal self-sacrificing. Still, keep bringing that up Dainix; the more of the squad that questions Kendal about his matter the better.
Caliban seems a little chipper here; they’re certainly happier than any other time we’ve seen them. If I had to guess I’d say they’re realising the positive effect Kendal’s determination and resolve may be having on Dainix and Tahraim’s plan is working.
Hmm, does Kendal look a little surprised in the final panel? Is that because of what Dainix said, the arenamaster summoning Dainix, or is it possible Kendal can see something amiss with this guard?
I’m betting either option 2 or 3. 2 means Kendal is concerned for Dainix after hearing his story about ticking off the arenamaster and if it’s 3 then Kendal may suspect either a wider plot afoot or that Dainix isn’t telling him the full truth.
My prediction for next week:
Arenamaster: Alright cyclops, you’re fighting blondie tonight. No, neither of you get a say in this. I’m expecting blood and under no circumstance must you or him undermine Zuurith’s authority and make him appear weak in front of the hundreds strong audience.
Dainix: (crosses fingers behind back) Don’t worry, we won’t.
I’m probably beating a dead horse… but I think Danix will function as a good foil or Lancer to Kendal.
They’re both basically human weapons for a god, but while Kendal has embraced that role (because he doesn’t know anything else) Danix is clearly struggling to accept what this means for his own autonomy. Kendal is in the “you never know until you try” mentality, while Danix is plagued by doubts. Kendal keeps getting distracted from hus mission by sidequests and helping people, while Danix is frustrated by anything that stops his mission for even a moment.
I have no doubts Tess will be joining the Floof squad after this arc, but Danix already has a party role as well
I don’t in particular believe Kendal to be *suicidal,* but I do agree he has some weird misconceptions about the value of his own life. Then again, he is a Protagonist, so what can you do? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Ooh, I can feel all the characters coming together. I can’t wait to see how Dainix and Tess incorporate into the Floof squad. With Dainix’s ‘therapist vibes’, he seems to be more level-headed (maybe he’ll give poor Falst a break from being the only voice of reason in the Floof Squad). Regardless, I feel like Dainix’s place as a monster-hunter gives him a unique perspective that’s really needed in this weirdly superpowered cast of characters.
I have I very hard question. Who is your favorite AND least favorite character?
Favorite: Erin because Erin
Least favorite: Kendal (please don’t kill me!) to be clear I don’t DISLIKE Kendal l just think that the other members of the floof squad are more interesting.
Dainix is concerned, as he should be. Also Caliban here is giving me vibes of a mom coming in to check on how her kid is getting along with the kid she’s forcing them to hang out with before telling them dinner is ready.
While I feel like we might just cut to Dainix and Arenamaster, it would be interesting to see Kendal recognize Caliban in mortal form and throw a wrench into their plan to “forge” Dainix. But either way I think we’re going to hear about the fight soon. Honestly, at this rate, I feel like we might go another chapter in Zuurith to wrap up all those loose ends.
@Archaleus: That’s a tough one.
My favorite is Erin because, you know, hubris man, and my least favorite… maybe Dainix? Though that might just be because we’re still in the process of learning what his whole deal is with Caliban and the demon and stuff. I like him, of course, but of the main six I think I like him the *least*. Falst and Kendal also rank pretty highly with me because of Falst’s sarcasm and just how nice Kendal is. I also really like seeing Kendal interact with people and I’ve been missing seeing his interactions with the rest of the group.
Considering how many times he’s already thrown himself into potential or actual danger, I don’t think it does matter to him. Let’s count: he was ready to fight The Collector mere seconds after waking up while suffering a major wound, he went into unknown danger to inspect the newly-formed Mt. Vash with a stranger with dangerously temperamental abilities, he pushed himself through broken bones to fight a gigantic haywire automaton, he jumped at the chance to head into The Storm (which had just been destroyed, and thus might have still had dangerous amounts of lingering elemental energy for a while), he threw himself around Alinua to take the Void Dragon’s attack in her stead, he was completely willing to head into The Singing Caves with absolutely no idea of what was down there, he was completely willing to head into The Singing Caves now aware of what was down there in order to save Erin, he got into a knockdown-dragout fight with a giant chimera and walked away with surprisingly few atomized bones, immediately went to fight a mysterious thief in the trees who clearly knows how to fight well, went back to fight that same thief not even a day later, nearly touched a dangerously volatile magical artifact without any knowledge of what it could do, got into a fistfight with another large and deadly chimera, was willing to stay awake all day every day, tried to fistfight The fucking Collector while astral-projecting, and now accepted a prison sentence to prevent Zuurith from extending his petty anger to the others. …Wow, Dainix has his work cut out for him if he’s going to try to fix Kendal’s suicidal savior complex.
Evil Tree:
I think it’s option 2. It doesn’t seem as though Kendal can spot divine souls the same way full-on gods can, so if a deity is disguised like Caliban here, he wouldn’t notice.
Somebody:
“But before I kill you, Mr. Dainix… have a cookie. You’ve earned it.”
Archaleus:

Least favorite… probably Alinua? She’s way too quick to anger for my liking, especially since her morals aren’t really aligned with mine (I get the sense she would punch someone for swatting an insect). This is mostly stemming from the fact that she was fully willing to kill Falst over a misunderstanding. Yes, Erin tried to kill Falst for a disproportionately small slight as well, but 1: Falst actually did steal Erin’s bag (which doesn’t excuse the attempted murder, but still), and 2: Erin has shown a drive to improve himself mentally and emotionally, whereas Alinua… hasn’t, really.
PSA for anyone interested in lore: check out the wiki and Tumblr! There’s all sorts of stuff on there I’d never have guessed was a thing otherwise, like apparently necromancy and ghosts are a thing.
Also, my theory a couple pages back needs to be reworked. Apparently lightning magic is a thing any metal-caste can develop if they get struck by it, not just because they inherited it. There might not even be lightning humans.

…Yeah, definitely hopping aboard the “I hope Dainix can help Kendal move past senseless self-sacrifice phase” train.
Does Dainix understand that this is literally the only direction Kendal has in his life? Is it really hard to imagine that someone would pick the only option they’ve ever known even if it’s potentially suicidal? Was Dainix about to spill more of his backstory before Caliban interrupted? Was Caliban in good spirits because they can tell that they’re plan is working? Will they reward Dainix with a bag of Temptations cat treats?
InsertPunHere and Aryane:

Personally I have NO IDEA who my favorite character is. I LIKE THEM ALL AND I’M NOT GOOD AT MAKING DECISIONS, OKAY?? I could give you an entire list of pros and cons for each character, (cos I like lists) but I still couldn’t name a favorite… I like Kendal because he is so sweet and kind and determined to protect everyone around him, I like Alinua because she is so sweet, and her struggle with reconciling herself with the spirit of life and her curse is kinda relatable, I’m not huge on Erin (DON’T HURT ME PLEASE!!) Because he is annoying and self centered, but his plot development and struggle with void dragon kinda makes up for it, I like Falst for his sarcasm and wit, and the feeling of separation that he struggles with, I like Tess because she is a goofy troublemaker (and I know a person like that), but I still get kind of protective older kid/sibling vibes from her, and I kinda like Dainix because he kinda seems to struggle with being used by Caliban like that, and he seems to care about others, just in a different way, but he’s a lancer, and I’m not huge on lancer types, plus we don’t know much about him… But yeah! I guess my least favorite is Dainix then, but only by a little bit and because we don’t know much about him, and unlike the others he is not sarcastic and witty, or wears his heart on his sleeve (I’m a big sucker for those kind of characters)
Cesium:
I agree! That would be hilarious!

I’m hoping for option 3, but I think it will end up being option 2…

Too true! But I guess that’s part of why I like Kendal!

To everyone who is confused about the guard being Caliban… WHO ELSE HAS GLOWING YELLOW EYES WITH NO PUPILS?? (But in all seriousness, you can see the eyes are the EXACT SAME as the ones of the guard who spotted them on the cliff top, who spoke with glowing yellow speech that Caliban used when talking to (aww shoot what’s his name…) Tahraim?
All of y’all are going on about self-preservation and valuing your own life, but like. Some things are worth dying for. And saving/trying to save a god, especially one as fundamentally good as Vash is, from a person who’s doing all the shit the Collector is doing is one of them.
Thanks to all who responded!
The reason I don’t find Kendal particularly interesting is largely my own tastes because I like stories with more nuanced, darker tones (though not actively GrimDark). Think, Dune, Invincible, Ender’s game, etc. while I like well written stories with lighter tones, (avatar the last air bender, Star Wars, and this comic.) my tastes clash with Kendal’s ultra-paragon good guy(TM) theme, and I could care less about the doings of gods. However Kendal’s near childish innocence, think playing with the squirrel in chapter nine, is so charming to me!
Nevertheless thanks for contributing, @Hiii, @The Unknown Game, and @Goldfinch. As well as anybody I missed!
Archaleus:
If you haven’t already, I would suggest watching the Castlevania adaptation on Netflix. @Archaleus, favourite character (though not a hero per say) is probably Tahraim ‘caus he’s a cross between Gandalf and a Hephaestus, least faveorite Erin ‘caus ego.
You know what would be funny? If Kendal refused to participate in the fight and only dodged and weaved through attacks. It would be such a middle finger to everyone orchestrating the barbarism.
I’m curious how Dainix and Falst are going to ge along. They almost seem like birds of a feather. Maybe it’s a common bearing of substantial mistreatment.
@The Unknown Game
Castlevania has been on my watch list for a long-ass time, I’ll check it out after I’m done watching His Dark Materials. Thanks for the recommendation. I would recommend His Dark Materials also, it has excellent acting, largely dark elements (no surprise there), contrasted by lighter elements, clever use of religious elements, and anti-theology themes (NOT atheist themes as everyone seems to think.) with similarities to paradise lost. @Archaleus This is one of those stories where I’m not drawn toward any one character in particular. I am looking forward to learning more about Tess, though. She’s been built up since Chapter 4, so I know there’s going to be a big payoff. Shrike’s the closest thing I have to a least favorite character at the moment since she’s causing so much trouble for everyone. Zuurith and the Arenamaster suck too, but their troublemaking provides Caliban opportunities to nudge Dainix in the right direction, so they’re a teeny bit more tolerable.
As previously mentioned I like Falst, for all the reasons everyone else stated, and because… well.. I kinda “like like” Falst. (I see you all judging me :^)
Seeing as my favorite character from Naruto is Kiba Inuzuka (whom I also “like like”) that makes sense
Least favorite is the arena master, hes the least Interesting character imo. I don’t HATE him per say… he’s just sort of boring
This interpretation means early! Alinua and Kendal dynamic was really more like
“You need to value your own life more.”
“Didn’t you just risk your life for no good reason?”
“Uh…This is about YOU. Stay focused.”
But I mean arguably it already was so…
Great comic I like your characters. drawing style and plot! I hope Blue has gotten over the Ptolimies. I can that he was pushed too over the uncanny valley, I hope Blue has come to grips with and has acceppted it and has told himself_ THIS is the line I will not cross!
I’m so glad the floof squad will finally get someone resembling a goddamn therapist in Dainix
Oh, wait, this is a second reason Dainix and Falst bonded… they both know what it’s like to try and talk sense into divine vessels
Hiii Caliban! Long time no see!
Here comes the part where the arenamaster reveals to our protagonists his evil master plan to get Dainix killed
Caliban is sus ):
Hi Caliban. So, did you sort that plan to get him out or not?
Finally, someone with self preservation! congrats Dainix, you’ve joined Falst in ascending to the level of Has Common Sense! XD.

Wow so it just occurred to me that Dainix was who they were talking about in 1.12.10. Caliban’s Champion huh…
Kendal: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Caliban: Allow me, a normal guard and certainly not your racial deity in disguise, to escort you.

TL;DR: Let’s hope the arena master doesn’t just kill you himself now…

“What’s ‘dying’?”
it would be funny if Kendal recognises Caliban.
Kendal: Caliban?
Danix: what .
Caliban: what.
Danix: why did you just randomly say my racial gods name.
Caliban: *mild panic*
Kendal: because they’re right there. *points*
Danix: what.
Caliban: *intense sweating*
or the other option.
Kendal: *stares at Caliban*
Caliban: *stares back*
Kendal: *narrows eyes*
Danix: why are you two staring at each other?
Kendal: no reason; i just thought i recognised them.
I don’t in particular believe Kendal to be *suicidal,* but I do agree he has some weird misconceptions about the value of his own life. Then again, he is a Protagonist, so what can you do? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

“I shirt for no man.”
Is that the same guard who was Caliban in disguise?

Nice one, Caliban

@Archaleus This is one of those stories where I’m not drawn toward any one character in particular. I am looking forward to learning more about Tess, though. She’s been built up since Chapter 4, so I know there’s going to be a big payoff. Shrike’s the closest thing I have to a least favorite character at the moment since she’s causing so much trouble for everyone. Zuurith and the Arenamaster suck too, but their troublemaking provides Caliban opportunities to nudge Dainix in the right direction, so they’re a teeny bit more tolerable.
@Archaleus.
