7 vs 1 + kryptonite bracelet + magic chains + narcotic weapons + THE GUY WITH A FUCKING SWORD.
That’s what they needed to stop Tess, it’s only fair for Alinua to level out the playing field 😉
What I’m curious about is what’s the set of reasons she decided to help…
I guess flicking your melon seeds is more accurate and subtle than spitting them.
I wonder what Tess’s expression is right now; as confused as the hunters are, concerned because she’s still chained or a massive s*** eating grin at their predicament. I hope it’s the latter.
Good news: Tess has a chance at escape; bad news: Shrike will be looking for a life mage to capture i.e. Ali. She may even put two and two together and figure out how the trespassers who leaped from the prison managed to walk away.
Falst, don’t you remember how she helped you against that Burrower Wyrm? You kinda owe her. Then again he also doesn’t try and stop Alinua from helping Tess and his expression in the last panel seems more concerned for their safety than angry at the act.
@Evil Tree, sidenote but what is a good way to extend “former-latter” terminology to longer lists? Would it be n-th formest/lattest or n-th formerest/latterest?
@Nerdico36
Whoops, only just noticed that. Yeah my use of ‘latter’ is wrong; I should have said ‘option three’, ‘the last one’ or something similar. I think former-later only works when there are two things.
Sorry Shrike, but grass type beats rock. Hopefully the electric type will be able to escape now without much more intervention, because getting captured wouldn’t be very fun and make this arc even more complicated.
I find it interesting that, unlike other mages, the glow of Alinua’s mark seems to linger for a while after casting a spell. (It’s also possible that she’s still subtly casting here to keep growing the melons, but we’ve seen a lingering glow on her before, when Life healed her after the Void Dragon laid her low in chapter 7.)
Will Tess get away? Will Alinua get away with this scot free? Is that hunter really just at klutz? Will Shrike start detaining any life mage she sees? Will Falst somehow get arrested even though he hasn’t done anything in this situation? While Shrike is distracted will Falst be able to sneak some Temptations cat treats out of her bag?
@TheUnknown Game
I think it’s possibly she was still casting then as well; perhaps there was still some lingering void magic that needed active healing to counteract, or she couldn’t heal the wounds instantly. All the glowing going on was at her injury sites and her tattoo.
Oh god this is a terrible idea, they’re all going to end up arrested and forced to fight to the death and also piss off a GOD who might just decide to execute them because they’re associates of Kendal.
Svata:
I don’t think Zuurith would be that petty; after all, he didn’t execute Kendal for being an associate of Vash. Zuurith seems to operate on an inflexible (in theory, anyway) internal logic: if people in his city won’t be productive, law-abiding citizens, they’ll be made useful to his society in other ways, i.e. imprisonment, not execution (you can’t be useful if you’re dead). In practice, though, his system has a lot of loopholes, caveats, fine print, and exploits, with everything from “which actions/beliefs/identities someone can be arrested for” even to “how far the city’s influence actually extends” being pliable to the whims of the guards, allied freelancers (like Shrike here), the city’s officials, and even Zuurith himself. Back to the subject at hand, I assume direct executions are reserved for treason or enemy-of-the-state high crime situations (which, even if Vash fit the bill, Kendal doesn’t on account of only having been alive for 13(?) days and in Zuurith for only 2); however, there is a massive gladiatorial arena right next to the prison, facilitating easy indirect executions (“Maybe they’ll die, maybe they won’t, and if they do, it was just bad luck or lack of skill, we’re not at fault for that at all!”).
In short: people in Zuurith face the same imprisonment for doing worse things than interfering with mercenaries and walking on a prison rooftop. Zuurith himself is an enormous cockwart, but I don’t think he’d sanction an execution for crimes of this scale.
thank you the anti government story it is helping me get though my guardianship court induced pain. my religion has things built in to fight this sort of tyranny
TheUnknownGame:
what could be more treasonous to a deity of law than trying to assist a fugitive from HIS law escaping his Justice? He didn’t execute Kendal because technically he hadn’t broken any laws and also Kendal’s whole situation is… weird. But his friends who actually DID break the law and such? Oh yeah, they’re put in the arena against each other and no one is allowed to leave until they’re dead. And then thrown back in for another dozen matches in a row.
I agree with whoever said foremost and lattermost (though Firefox spellcheck doesn’t like the latter) as referring to the first and last items of a longer list. You can also do things like “the latter two” to refer to . . . well, it’s probably self-explanatory.
And a minor diversion, but if for some reason you want the second to the last item, that’s penultimate. I’m not aware of any other constructions of that sort.

Flicked the melon seeds!
An excellent distraction!
Just don’t be seen now!
(Bonus)
WHOOP! And down he goes.
I’d usually feel bad,
but this time? I laugh.
Alinua used Bind!
It’s super effective!
Now that Alinua jumped (well, more like threw some seeds) in to help, the odds are even- Well, no, they’re now leaning in Tess’s favor.

They didn’t get captured. Nice
I only just caught up with the story, and now what?

Huh, I just noticed that a couple members of Shrike’s crew aren’t masked up! Wonder if they’re not affected by the Some Kind Of Status Effect powder
@The Lolest Because Kendal would have helped, I guess
@Nerdico36

tess DOES seem like the sort of person who doesn’t know if theyre dabbing ironically or not

Melon attack go!
Desert moons, anyone? Don’t mind the boot smell.

There was a certain ma’am in Zuurinth long ago, she was big and strong and her skin was shiny gold.
@The Lolest
I think Alinua might be dangerously nice.
alt text: probably just the wind

Tune in This Week to Find Out!
TL;DR: Ah yes, when the protagonist is too nice and helps some rando who definitely didn’t help her first. Seeds, away!
Also sorry this is late. Had a thing called school today but accidentally slept in.
Falst: Ok Alinua, we’ll avoid the prison break arc; FINE!
Alinua: Yes… right… hum… about that…
@Nerdico36
I think it would be foremost/lattermost

Every time something happens in the comic whether it makes sense or not to say I’m always like “must have been the wind” now XD

I see Alinua’s feeling vine today

Falst looks so done with this in the last panel
yes Zuurith seems to be like the guardianship court enslaving the people to their arbitrary rules.
whoop
Catboy does not look that pleased…

I need to see this webcomic in either an animation form or a game
Either one would be legit
Not sure who will destroy this city first, Tyana or Alinua. Either way I will not shed a tear about it.
On the former/latter discussion:

And now there’s about to be a crazy discount sale on melons at the intersection of two nameless alleys.
@ The Brick: I took your idea and ran off with it lol. I’m like 2/3 of the way through finishing the song XD
Will post here when done.
I genuinely love how the rune/tattoo glows through the cape, idk why, it’s just cool 🙂
