Blue desert melon!
Meanwhile, Tess looks pretty bored
chilling on the roof.
I love how sarcastic Falst is
I like this. Alinua’s excitement about a blue melon. The merchants exitement about getting to talk about the blue melon. This is all just precious.
Speaking of precious, this must be a good day for the merchant, having a fun customer *and* getting payed extra!
My sister told me a really good joke the other day and I wish to share it here.
Q: what is the most unspoken language in the world?
A: sign language.
If any of you guys use this joke on someone you know pls tell me how they reacted.
I’m not really a fan of melons, unless it’s MelonDS ?
It’s official, Alinua loves melons. … Wait let me re-phrase that.
I’m about 60-70% sure Alinua is picking new fruits so she can keep the seeds to re-grow them later, she even got some free growing conditions from the vendor. She’s also making the best faces this page.
Falst I know you’re bored and not nearly as interested in horticulture as Ali but, unless the populace of Zuurith are sarcasm blind, maybe keep your voice down on that last statement.
Tess may be sunbathing but she doesn’t look happy; she genuinely wants to help and warn the citizens of Zuurith but all she gets are guards chasing after her. It’s a long shot but Shrike seems intelligent and not too close to the guards so if Tess mentioned the storm in front of her she might listen. She’d still try and take her in yes, but may still ponder Tess’s worry.
For some reason this page specifically is giving me big avatar vibes
The blue melon takes me back to when there was a photoshopped image of blue strawberries going around… I think Tumblr? I still kind of wish those were real, I love a blue food
I love it when characters have no concept of money
Shop keeper: that will be $11.40
Character: Is this enough? *hands over a fifty*
I agree, the market does give off a market vibe, the only thing that will complete it, is if one of our protagonists want a really nice bag
I meant Avatar vibes!
Just realised Erin is probably the only member of the party to know how money works. Vash probably never paid attention to it (not really his godly perview, even if trade did happen in his city, its not the protector’s job to know about it), Alinua isolated herself for most of her life, getting goods only as donations, and Falst was a thief by necessity, meaning he stole things he needed to use, not things to sell for money to buy things (I’m guessing he never found a fence to sell stolen goods, so why bother?)
It’s great, love snarky characters
Kendall, Alinua and Falst go shopping. They return with like very little stuff. But Erin’s wallet is empty.
Erin looks at how less they have brought back. Then at his empty wallet
Erin’s brain: Mathematical error.
TL;DR: The first time you go out with your school friends and decide to buy a meal with no shopping experience. Blue desert melon anyone?
I have a question for those more versed in Word of Red than I: Has she ever explained how the different elemental humans came about? I’m getting this mental image of a woman giving birth. The midwife is like “congratulations, it’s a fish!” before everybody has a double take and freaks out.
Replying to my own comment
What I mean is, were they just born to unelemental humans fully influenced or was it a gradual thing over generations or what?
Tess looks like she’s worried and watching the SKY~
The plot is plotting.
Stark9865 — iirc, evolution sped up a bit by the influence of the elements, basically. not quite the agonisingly slow, millennia upon millennia we usually expect from human evolution (because humans haven’t been around for much more than several thousand years in aurora), but still a process that happened gradually over many generations.
Alinua getting excited about special melons is very very pure and I’m here for that kind of content
M E L O N
What colour is this melon on the inside? Is that melon a deus es machina? Did Alinua just do the equivalent of paying $100 for a stick of gum? Is Tess even capable of getting a suntan with her metal skin? Will Falst’s sarcastic statement unwittingly draw the attention of the authorities? Is he just being sarcastic because he’d rather buy a package of Temptations cat treats?
Tune in This Week to Find Out!
Omg i love Aluina so much one this page. Fantasy watermelon!
I love Alinua’s expressions on this page! Her love of weird plants is so wholesome. (I hope she doesn’t find that melon to taste disgusting…)
Cook a slice to cross the Gerudo Desert.
Dark Wolf:
Even when they do have monetary knowledge, shenanigans can easily ensue. For example (from Castlevania, season 3):
Saint Germaine: “I would like two apples.”
Apple merchant: “That’ll be two coins each.”
Saint Germaine: “But yesterday they were one coin each.”
Apple merchant: “Yes?”
Saint Germaine: “I’m sorry, has there been some recent apocalyptic development that I’m unaware of?”
Apple merchant: “Time’s moved on. Season’s ending. Less supply, same demand.”
Saint Germaine (sarcastically): “Yes, time absolutely does move on, and sadly, none of us is master or mistress of it. You should be a banker.”
Apple merchant: “Give me some coins to count, then. Practice!”
Saint Germaine: *pulls out coin* “Ah, excellent. I have one grosh.”
Apple merchant: “I said two coins each.”
Saint Germaine: “But a grosh is twice as large as a denarius, and twice as thick, with twice the silver of a denarius.”
Apple merchant: “We don’t truck with that eastern money around here. Proper coin, Mister Saint Germaine.”
Saint Germaine: “Oh, for the love of…” *pulls out three more grosh* “My apples, if you please.”
can’t wait for when a chase scene happens and they run over this poor man’s melons

Do metal-caste tan?
Yooo!! This chapter was nice :)) seeing Alinua get all excited about a melon was cute, and Falst’s bit of sarcasm at the end was funny
… maybe it’s a blue desert… ?
Let’s hope it stays that way, I like friendly merchant with cool blue melon
This page is so wholesome, I love it. Alinua’s obsessing over a melon and trying out some Erin-level commentary.
@Shrimp heaven now: yes it does. I think its the closeup of Alinua staring at a melon and subsequent unexplained obsession over it.
@Somebody: dang thats true. hardcore facts.
If Tess is made of metal, exactly how hot does her skin get when sunbathing? I’m picturing Shrike trying to grab her and getting an immediate second-degree burn.
@ paperclipperie
Thanks. Though now I’m sad my imaginary scenario couldn’t happen.
@toby lonelytuatara
You love blue food? Pery jackson vibes lol
Hey look a funny scene establishing that aliluna and falst who know about tes and that shes not a threat are within ear shot of her and can intervene in a fight that we know is about to happen oh and look both kendal and erin arn’t there to talk some sense into any one or intervene such a perfect set up for a fight.but seriously good job with the set up can’t wait for the nest page!(Please excuse my poor spelling and grammar)
Tess just strait VIBIN’on da roof
Indego I told my mom it she smiled and said “ohhhhhh have you seen that movie koda”I have no idea what that is.
WEast:
Probably not that hot, more like the hood of a car in a Californian summer (no, not a car that’s been consumed by fire, just one that’s been sitting in sunlight all day).
Oh my-
If Tess is made of metal, right, then can Shrike just control her????
I don’t think so, the soul tends to stop most of that stuff, unless it’s life magic.
To TheUnknownGame:
I kind of figured that Tess’s body was organic, but with a composition that mimicked some metallic aspects (though i could have missed something and be wrong on this). That doesn’t mean that her skin couldn’t be heat conductive to the level you describe, though–I regularly burn my hand on my cat in the summer. She’s a brown torbie shorthair and the mottling along her spine and flanks really soaks up the sun’s energy (and it really doesn’t take long for her fur to heat up).
I am obsessed with Alinua’s eyes in the first panel
Is she just camping out on roofs? Does she not have to worry about sunburns?
I love Falst’s sarcasm here! I wonder if there are any settlements inhabited mostly or even only by Ferin? I’d love to see what kind of culture they would develop together with everyone else rejecting them….
Anyone gonna talk about the fact that the shopkeeper kinda looks like Erin with yellow eyes
(Also hi I’m still Varda but my default is Tony now)
Mmm hydro melon
To: Ordog123
I’ve got no idea what she’s talking about either, my sister says she got it off YT
who says the desert cant have blue sand? or, its trying to attract animals to eat the melon and spread the seeds out, so standing out is good 😛
Tess vibing
Also I’m 70% sure she’s going to find some way to use the melon to beat Shrike. Somehow
After 2 long years, the word “blue” is finally said. This is a shoutout to OSP Blue in my headcanon.
I just recently found this, and I have to say, red, you are AMAZING at this, this is one of only like 3 pieces of media that is both super engaging and the only issue is there is not enough of it. All of your characters feel like real people instead of plot devices and your world building is great. You manage to convey so much emotion in so few lines and I love it.
yes they are trying to act corectly
I had my screens blue light filter off, so I was a little confused when they were calling the melon blue.
Falst’s response to an economics question is hillarious
