Maybe it’s just me drawing lines where I shouldn’t see them.
But this is definitely a better type of chosen one. Admits “Okay, I was being a jerk. How am I actually supposed to go about this?”
“There’s this really fancy restaurant that just opened up. Get reservations for us two, tonight and you’re paying.”
“… Really?”
“Haha! No.”
Trying the apology route might work out, but it’s still a big ‘might’; the receptionist still looks far too done to give Erin the time of day, let alone free run of the archives.
Erin’s going for one last attempt at the archives like I thought but he also seems to want to at least leave on good terms with the paladins. He may be thinking of returning on the off chance the Soulshaper Monks can’t help.
I really like that marble veining effect, does give this building and the people in it a different vibe from the rest of Zuurith.
“Roll for remorse.”
“Critical success.”
“Okay, so first of all, you’re gonna go crawling back and apologise to that cultist receptionist. She didn’t deserve that treatment, and she probably isn’t getting paid enough to put up with people like you.”
You know, I really like what Red is doing with Mr Entitled McHubirus. He clearly is used to getting things his way right off the bat, but he has a few humble moments when things don’t go his way. Both here and when he finally found out Kendal’s backstory, he showed a lot of respect and willingness to admit he is wrong. It’s clearly not his default mood, but it shows he knows how to be respectful and considerate.
Erin’s been kind since the beginning; we’re talking about the guy who was willing to die for others, including two people he’d just met (chapter 7). He’s simply the sort of person who acts one way out of impulse and a very different way when he has time to think, as he’s had now. This isn’t new behavior for him.
Kerin jokes aside… I completely understand why Erin acted the way he did when he first arrived at the archive. Yes, a good chunk of it was entitlement, but it was also desperation. He’s got a doomsday dragon stuck in his head, after all. Does that excuse what he did? No. But it’s telling that once he had a chance to cool off, he realized his mistake and apologized.
Though admittedly part of me was hoping the plan was an Oceans 11 heist where the three of them broke into the archive, but if the alt text is right that’s still on the table…
I really hope this archivist sticks around. I think the chances are pretty good that they have a significant role due to the fact that they are on the character page.
@LayeringYellow two other possibilities:
1. She’s on the character page due to being unexpectedly popular or fun to write, with no plans for future appearances beyond a cameo at best
2. We’re meant to love her so it hurts when Red kills her
Ok. Here’s how this works:
– it’s not possible. Go away
– You need to pledge loyalty to someone which:
– may hurt a lot
– will let the ‘good’ dragon ‘see’ you and set all the padalins on you
– Do this weird thing for no reason other than I want to laugh at you
– Hey kid, you like proving yourself?
I just had a thought. If Kendal is in Vash’s body, what will happen to him when he frees Vash? Will he die? Or will Vash just make a new body? I hope Vash just makes a new body.
Is the Archivist just humouring Erin so that she can embarrass him? Will the Paladins realize who this vessel belongs to? Who does Erin need to win against in crokinole to get access to the archives? When will I get tired of this dumb running joke with crokinole and come up with some other dumb running joke?
Always remember folks, apologiizing and self reflection are key in gaining access to the archives of a cult! Unless, of the archivist is just humoring him, or Alinua/Falst burst in at just the wrong momemt to tell him Kendal’s new job description.
Jeez. Reading this page’s comments (hadn’t read this comic’s comments prior to this strip), it’s apparent I’m the only person who saw the archivist as the one being a jerk in their first meeting. Erin had an incorrect understanding of the facility’s purpose, and rather than politely correcting him she condescended to him right from the start.
Anonymous Aurora Question #35: How many of you have been here since the start of the Tynan fight? I personally only showed up during the Zombie Dungeon Bonding Arc.
I’m with Receptionist Lady: “well, this is different.”
Just like every other major character he’s capable of adapting somewhat to the circumstances and learning from his mistakes.
Do I sense some actual character development?
It helps being nice to the clerk/retail worker/etc.
Ti Sunstorm the Budgie:
So it would seem.
Apologizing…
Apology accepted!
Now, time to listen!
Maybe it’s just me drawing lines where I shouldn’t see them.
But this is definitely a better type of chosen one. Admits “Okay, I was being a jerk. How am I actually supposed to go about this?”
Rip the painted ceiling ?
How a customer service representative feels like speaking after being treated poorly.
Erin? More like Kerin!
…I’ll see myself out…

Wow, he is finally learning basic human decency. Well done Erin.
Good job Erin. Congrats on learning how to be decent rather than rubbing yourself in someone’s face.

“Critical success.”

The junior archivist is unironically my second-faovourite character (after Falst). I love them

I fear this is the beginning of the end in the saga that is Erin’s hubris
The junior archivist is officially my favorite minor character. I love them and their snark.
I also love the alt text: “How this works is no. Get outta here.”
Erin’s been kind since the beginning; we’re talking about the guy who was willing to die for others, including two people he’d just met (chapter 7). Who is this and what has he done with Erin???
Kerin jokes aside… I completely understand why Erin acted the way he did when he first arrived at the archive. Yes, a good chunk of it was entitlement, but it was also desperation. TL;DR: Is that the painful sound of “swallowing my hubris for a second” I hear?
THE JUNIOR ARCHIVIST RETURNS!!!
Also, love how Erin admits he was wrong. Character development, baby!
Character development!
I do want to recognize his humility here, but part of me also keeps thinking, “Well, he DOES have appearances to keep up, after all.”
What???!!! Self-reflection in an elite? What an unrealistic character.
wooo Erin! Growth!
Atta boy! I really love how he reacts to the archivist’s stance and the archivist in turn reacts to him.
I really hope this archivist sticks around. I think the chances are pretty good that they have a significant role due to the fact that they are on the character page.
This poor archivist doesn’t even get a cushion. I would share the disposition if I had to put up with Erin without a cushion.

He might finally speak to the manager

Tune in This Week to Find Out!
Character development for Erin the Karen (Aren? Kerin?)
Always remember folks, apologiizing and self reflection are key in gaining access to the archives of a cult! Unless, of the archivist is just humoring him, or Alinua/Falst burst in at just the wrong momemt to tell him Kendal’s new job description.
To Hermit Thrush:
Or 3) A combination of both of the above. At this point, that’s what I would expect…
Well, it looks like TheUnknownGame has beaten me to the alt text today. But for consistency’s sake, here’s today’s entry:
Today’s Alt Text:
How this works is no. Get outta here.
@Hermit Thrush That’s a good point, I had not considered option number two.
Skye:
Apologies for stepping on your turf…

Gleicann was only in the characters page for a time, I’m sure the junior archivist is just there for now too.
the un-Karening of Erin
Anonymous Aurora Question #35: How many of you have been here since the start of the Tynan fight? I personally only showed up during the Zombie Dungeon Bonding Arc.
I just don’t get this OOOO, CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT !!!
Erin is as able as you and I to ACT meek and humble when he can’t have his way. He’s no five-year old.
I’m with Receptionist Lady: “well, this is different.”
Just like every other major character he’s capable of adapting somewhat to the circumstances and learning from his mistakes.
