I really like this recurring theme of:
“Kendal, new guy to the whole “existence” thing, getting taught life lessons that are pretty dang hard to catch on to without nuance and experience by every sub-protagonist he meets”
–Peace is a lie, there is only passion; through passion, I gain strength; through strength, I gain power; through power, I gain victory; through victory, my chains are broken. The Force will set me free.–
The Code of the Sith, from Star Wars.
I’m suddenly unsure about this guy… It’s not *certain* by any means – so far he seems to be applying it with the proper amount of moderation and direction, whereas the philosophy of the Sith and the meaning they draw from their Code is decidedly lacking in both qualities. But this rings major alarm bells…
Honestly, he has a point. When i’m angry it gives me energy to do something productive, and i use that energy rather than push it away. If i tried hiding it completely, it wouldn’t end well for anyone, since i tried that some time ago and it ended… badly. That would also lead him to becoming bitter about his current situation, which could lead him to give up. Emotions are there to show how you are responding to a situation – if you’re angry, something might be not fair and hurting you. That’s why it’s such a strong emotion – it triggers you to do something about it. And obviously sometimes this isn’t possible, but that energy is still there, and i understand why he prefers to use it than make it go away.
Wise man once said “When life gives you lemons? Don’t make lemonade. Make life take the lemons back! Get mad!”
If this is regular Ignan fighting logic it makes a lot of sense. The fire element has been stated in Red’s tumblr and being a key part of emotions, and since Ignans are almost entirely fire mages it seems logical they would see the proper channeling of emotions to be a powerful tool.
Just as well Kendal was put into the fancy suite; I doubt all prisoners would share Dainix’s restraint and decency. Nor would I imagine the prison infirmary is big enough for all of them if Kendal decided to fight back.
Yeah, shame his body patterns can’t be copy and pasted like with Erin’s tattoos, or at the very least symmetrical across his body. Not to mention he doesn’t strike me as a big shirt wearer.
TL;DR: My philosophy is this: Do exactly what pretty much every fighting coach tells you NOT to do.
Side note- Does anyone want these to continue? I figured I’d ask again because there seems to be a new form of these around (the haikus) and I was wondering if people prefer those and would like me to stop being annoying.
Ooo, Dainix has a teacher. Wonder if/when we will get to meet them. @Somebody the TL;DRs can exist in tandem with the haikus, they are a bit different and both good.
@Rashkavar it depends on the setting. Does it operate on Starfire logic or Raven logic? If Starfire logic, then your passions are great tools to fight the good fight. If Raven logic, then your passions are going to get everyone killed.
When life gives you lemons, squeeze the juice into the eyes of your enemies.
Also, none of my previous theories have been disproved and on that note… *squints at screen and mumbles incoherently*
@Somebody
Your comments are not annoying. Everyone’s input is valuable and, on here, almost always hilarious. Keep going, if for no other purpose than to read between updates. Personally, I think they’re great. They remind me of Red’s snarky comments in the image name thingy and at the bottom of the page.
Why does it feel so novel to see a character go “Yeah I’m angry, but I’m not going to lash out at everyone around me like an asshole.” Actually directing your emotions towards something constructive is such a rare thing to see…
I noticed a lot of people have a “thing” in the comments.
Evil tree does predictions/theories and speculations.
Somebody does TL;DRs
And Hello Haikus does haikus.
I just want to say thanks to all those peeps and all the others that speculate, write haikus and TLDRs. They’re nice to read between comic updates
I have a feeling this guy is gonna be “The Heart” of the team, if he ends up joining.
And yeah, to agree with what everyone else is saying, I appreciate both the haikus and TLDRs, they’re funny and you should keep doing them if you want.
If Dainix joins the team, it’ll be interesting to see him and Kendal be so calm next to the other three, seeing as how they’re emotionally high-strung a lot of the time.
Somebody:
Please continue! I know you don’t get a lot of replies now, but your TL;DRs are still appreciated! (If only this site had likes/upvotes…)
Evil Tree:
I wouldn’t call that man wise, considering he fucked around with industrial chemicals and moon rocks, and ended up dying by inhaling silicate dust from said moon rocks.
I have to say, as someone who struggles with emotional repression and is only now learning how to properly process anger instead of trying to make it go away… I really appreciate this page.
Okay, i may have missed something, but what exactly does Kendal mean about being freed after only a few days? Because as far as I know, the closest to Kendal getting out that’s happened so far is Falst and Alinua’s botched prison break attempt…
@ Skye: He has an agreement with Zuurith. When the party is done in his city supposedly he’ll release Kendal. Whether he intends to is dubious in my opinion but we’ll have to see.
Who is Dainix angry with? What further wisdom does he possess? Did he literally just summarize fifty percent of my own personal philosophy more concisely than I ever could? When is the plot going to interrupt this wholesome bonding session? Has Caliban been distracted with the guard’s high-stakes crokinole game?
Right, I’d forgotten about that. Well, that and the way the line was written threw me off a bit.
I’d give it at best a 50-50 chance Zuurith will honor his agreement. on one hand, he’s a city of order and law, and that would imply honoring bargains and contracts, including the ones he doesn’t like. On the other hand, he’s also a paranoid control freak, which implies that now that he’s got Kendal exactly where he wants him, he’s going to abuse every loophole he can to keep him there.
So, really, the odds are probably closer to 25% chance he honors the agreement, 75% chance he goes for a loophole.
I’m not saying this guy is going to be terrifying when he is finally up against a thing he needs to make cease existing… but I am definitely betting when he decides that someone DOES deserve his anger they will end b4 they even realize the fight began.
(“he needs”, definitely, seems too stable to kill something/one just because he WANTS them dead)
imho; there’s a 100% change Zuurith tries for a loophole… the only question is does our band of merry misfits legislate out or do they jailbreak out. They’ll definitely try for the former first, and I am on the edge of my seat!
Skye:
Considering how much legislators love legal loopholes, I also find it likely he’ll leverage loads of them to keep his largest nemesis’s last hope on a loosely effective leash.
Yes, if you still want to do your tl;dr, absolutely go ahead and keep doing them. If you stop doing them I think it’s more than likely that someone else will pick them up. The haikus are another running joke that I enjoy looking at in addition to the tl;drs. I’ve recently started doing cliché cliff hanger text that, while I’ve yet to see anyone actually acknowledge them, I intend to keep doing because I find them funny and I’d like to think that at least one other person does.
I’d like to think that there’s plenty of space for each of us to keep doing our own running jokes in the comment sections of these pages.
ah yes computer problems are finally solved and now i can get back to my regular reading & commenting…
@Somebody: I love your TL;DRs and always look for them down in the comments! They remind me of Red, and I always laugh :).
@Steve, Lord of Darkness: I DID start to notice you doing that… I agree, the running jokes are what draw me to the comments in the first place, and I love that people have taken the time and effort to do them. One of these days I’ll come up with my own to add…
So, people have been posting stuff regularly in the comment section (Haiku, TLDRs, etc.), so I am jumping on the bandwagon as well. Here is a Limerick:
Two prisoners sit in a cell,
and on their emotions they dwell,
Dainix feels rage
because he’s stuck in a cage,
While Kendal is unhappy as well.
Saving this one for my next pep talk:
allow yourself to feel
use those feelings to absolutely wreck your enemies
now get out there and fix people’s IT issues
I like his little pat on kendal’s hand, and I think in that moment he realized just how little kendal knew about the world. Sort of in a “oh my sweet child, I already know it’s unfair” sort of way. Dainix so far only knew that kendal was surprisingly eloquent, strong enough to break out by himself, and had a great moral compass; but now we know he know so much more just from one reaction.
To everyone posting things in the comments (TL;DR, limericks, haikus, cliffhangers, etc):
Was there someone posting the hidden text for people who couldn’t see it, and are they still doing that? Because I’ve considered picking that up, if the role wasn’t already filled–think it would be appreciated?
To HelloHaiku, Somebody, Steve, Lord of Darkness and no-one: Thank you for your Haikus, TL;DRs, TINWs and the first limerick. I wanted to acknowledge you all and say that I like these ongoing comment things a lot and I hope you guys can keep them going.
There also used to be the mum club and some other things that I haven’t seen in a while, does anybody know what’s up with those?
Anway, thank you all for this very nice to read comment section!
Maybe I’ll also come up with something to contribute.
Alt text: “I’ll just design this character with complex unique flame patterns all over his skin I need to hand draw every single time, I see no downsides to this flawless plan” -me, making a very good decision
He seems nice
Slightly scary but nice
Remember kids, a manly man feels all his manly emotions. ALL OF THEM.
Great emotional insight I know, but panel two;
Them,,,
Holding hands ? ??
(Why I’ve become like this I don’t ship them It isn’t even a funny joke…)

He knows it’s not right,
but he’ll use his anger on
some better pursuits.
(Bonus)
“With great emotions,
comes great storage of weapons.”

Well that’s some food for thought. If only I could use my frustration to motivate myself to draw

But, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering, something something dark side.

Amen to that philosophy Dainix. Amen. Will try it.
Ooo, Dainix has a teacher. Wonder if/when we will get to meet them. @Somebody the TL;DRs can exist in tandem with the haikus, they are a bit different and both good.
For your own sanity Red, put a dang shirt on the boi! lol

Bap
Can we keep him?
it will be very interesting to see Falst and Dainix interact if Dainix joins the group, since Dainix is very calm and Falst is very impulsive.
Give that floof boi a lightsaber !
I have to say, as someone who struggles with emotional repression and is only now learning how to properly process anger instead of trying to make it go away… I really appreciate this page.
All the character development here just makes me all warm and fuzzy inside

Somebody: I personally love your tl;dr s, and a lot of other people do too! Please keep writing them (unless you don’t want to of course)
to Somebody: don’t you dare quit with the amusing TL;DRs! 😛
I sense a potential downward spiral

That’s my secret, Kendall. I’m always angry.
Well No-one is contributing limericks now. I’m gonna try and come up with something to contribute to
The contributions
that people make form a sense
of community.
Every comment counts.
It’s fun to read others’ posts.
I enjoy them all.
@Arakqu Much manliness.
@Skye:
I don’t think there was anyone doing that? That sounds helpful though, i’d say go ahead!
Now my teacher would probs have something to say about the rationalisation of emotions, but I love this dialogue!
All the best,
Lou
I’m getting real anime paragon hero vibes from this guy, I like him and I can see these two getting along as a dream team
This comic is soo good it’s actively damaging to my health ^^
well yes, i’m exaggerating but i DID forget to eat for at least four hours so

-Dainsleif Ragnvindr (Dainix) when he actually uses that weapon-anger
Dainix is just Hulk
