. Selach dodges as the Wyrm whisks past them. “We have to get out of the ocean!” she shouts. “Back to the fissures!”
. “But she’s–” Alinua starts from in Selach’s arms, looking up at the Wyrm wonderingly.
. Selach jerks to a halt as the Wyrm’s tail slashes past them again, slamming into the ceiling, knocking loose giant chunks of stone.
. “Oh, Byys,” the mermaid whispers as the stone falls toward them through the water.
School starts today! That’s the only reason I’m up this early lol
Fandom question – does anyone else here like EPIC: the Musical?
I love EPIC so much! It’s so amazing and beautiful! The Captain is incredible when it comes to writing lyrics and music.
(To Zer0: Thanks from a mobile reader)
Ikkkk it’s the best!!!
Also if u didn’t know, he has a Youtube channel AND he’s making an Iliad musical!!! It’s called Ilium and the snippets of the first song we’ve gotten are AMAZIIIIING
Ah! So THAT’S where Erin’s bag went after the boat was wreaked!
Granted Falst has taken/taken from Erin’s bag without permission several times before.
(Seriously though, are they ever going to find that bag, even with mer-people help? It’s still got a lot of supplies in it which could be hard or even impossible to replace on Helm.)
Yes, the instruments corresponding to characters combined with the motifs is just really cool, and the music gets better the more you dissect and understand it.
I’m really loving the colours on this page (and the chapter in general). I hope Alinua will be able to help the Wyrm and let it live, but I have a feeling we won’t get such a happy ending to this chapter
i actually think the wyrm is going to be fine, simply because the protagonists still have to finish sailing across the sea, and their boat is wrecked. maybe they can get a new one on rakhn, but if not, they’ll need something else, and catching a ride on the calmed northern wyrm would be a nice solution for that
N.W.: Now with the stone ceiling broken all the oppressed groups will prosper. Especially the most oppressed group of them all: sneks.
I never get tired of Red’s SFX work. The cracks of the SMASH matching the breaking of stone, the clean WHOOSH of movement, and the strange wobbly POW and scratchy RAAAAUKH scream from last page really make these action scenes.
Plus more great expressions on these two, especially the final panel; both realising the danger they’re in and Selach having to carry Alinua though all of it. I wonder if Alinua may feel guilt at staying too long at the shrine, putting her friend in danger.
Welp, that wound is regenerating quickly in panel 3. Looks like trying to whittle down the Wyrm overtime with this technique isn’t viable; Alinua is going to have to target a more vital area with a larger blast.
Unless she discovers why the incarnation reacted like that and adjusts her approach, though finding the time to do that while dodging falling rocks may be tricky. (sigh) Having Erin here would be very useful.
Hi, thanks for bringing up this fantasy curse word. I think living near unfathomable depths with the threat of monstrosities emerging at any moment would inspire such an expletive.
My semantical ass is hung up on pronunciation/spelling:
– If the origin is the abyss, why the double y?
– This origin theory would also mean it’d probably be pronounced with a short ‘i’ sound.
– I instinctively read the ‘yy’ as a long ‘ee’, but the only real uses of this I found through my brief googling is Ukrainian’s Zelenskyy.
– (I think ‘bis’ sounds better than ‘bees’, especially with the abyss connection.)
Per tumblr ask lore (the source of much Aurora lore not in the comic itself); ‘Byys’ rhymes with ‘fleece’, so it’s not pronounced like that, but they *are* the god of the deep dark parts of the ocean, so I wouldn’t be surprised if that was the Doylist etymology for their name (and perhaps the pronunciation was specifically made different to obfuscate/give plausible deniability to that link, as you do).
Iirc Red said on her Tumblr that Byys is a very dangerous region of the deep ocean, with many gaps in the seafloor connecting directly to the Singing Caverns. So the closest equivalent I can think of would be “Oh hell”.
For mobile readers.
Alt-text: ooooh what a feeling when you’re smashing through the ceiling

You mean out of the open
Up next on Aurora: Falst makes a jetpack using a wind lacrima and a bag
Ah! So THAT’S where Erin’s bag went after the boat was wreaked!

The merfolk know where the wreck is, so its possible that they could salvage some stuff once the threat of the wyrm is dealt with?
YESYESYES
I love It so much! (didn’t like how calypso was handled, but) THE MUSIC IS SO GOOD!
Oh, *out of the open, not Ocean

In all seriousness, Selach, girl, I hope you’re good a swimming in weird patterns
At the very least I hope she’s not a graduate of the Prometheus School of Running Away from Things.
Why, I also slap my ceiling when trying to hit a fly!
Whoosh, a-ah.
Alinua will save every one of us.
Smash, a-ah
Savior of the universe.
Smash, a-ah
She’s a miracle
Smash, a-ah
Queen of the impossible
She’s for every one of us
Stand for every one of us
She saves with a mighty hand
Every man, every woman, every child, it’s the mighty Life (Oh)
** Sang to the tune of Flash theme by Queen. Darn, I’m old. **
Ah byys indeed, my friend, I think

Don’t let him here you say that.
And on this quiz episode, is “Oh byys” supposed to sound like “abyss” or is that just a coincidence?
(Or not the case at all)

As they make a break for the tunnels whence they came
A tail strikes out in precaution of them doing the same
well think of it this way, if you do survive you can make it out along side the big worm
No, Selach, it’s A byss ಠಿ_ಠ
Is it just me, or are those three “rocks” in the foreground of panel four giving off getting-eaten-by-Shai-hulud vibes.
It’s something to do with their shape and position…and the fact that all of the Collector’s creations have a three-part mouth….
“Hey Wyrm, fish are friends, not food! Didn’t you pay attention to Finding Nemo?”
(I’m assuming it also counts for fish-people.)
OMG this has nothing to do with your comment but ruby hiking boots?! Is that a play on ruby slippers?! That’s so clever!!
a poll for ya’ll: is “oh byss” feel more like an ‘oh fuck” or an ‘oh shit’ ?
To me it was giving “oh lord” but idk ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Iirc Red said on her Tumblr that Byys is a very dangerous region of the deep ocean, with many gaps in the seafloor connecting directly to the Singing Caverns. So the closest equivalent I can think of would be “Oh hell”.
Ohh that’s probably it actually
I am of the opinion that Selach is too pure to swear (ignoring all evidence of the contrary) so to me it’s an “oh frick”
/sarcastic
the alt text is refrencing a song? is this true? what song is it if so?
Dancing on the Ceiling by Lionel Richie
