. Falst lets out a breath of relief, adjusting his scarf-mask. He leans against the wall of the tunnel, sliding the sling with Dainix in it off his back. He looks at it tiredly. “If this doesn’t work, I’m gonna smack that god with you, okay?” he says. “Cool.”
. He hops out of the tunnel, racing along a thin, horizontal spire of rock, Demonheart–Dainix back on his back. Volcanic Ignan guards stand on a glass platform near the edge of the cavern, facing away from him. Then Falst freezes as the cavern rumbles.
. Rakhn roars, eyes alight in flame, swinging his greatsword and sending a wash of lava after Kendal.
. Falst is flung away from the rock thread as lava explodes from a tunnel nearby him.
I didn’t really know what to call what Falst is running on, so I just said “horizontal spire”. Any other suggestions?
Sir, SIR, we have a cute bishy catboy here, trying to get through the lava, could you keep your temper just a little? What do you mean, “flaming rage”, “temper fickle as a flame”, “lava-hot-headed”? CATBOY saving mmmaaayyybeeeeromantic interest, okay?!
Or we could just, like, eat the ENTIRE Fireseed if you put us in a rush. Which I suspect is gonna end up happening anyway, because Red makes good plot.
Or we could just, like, eat the ENTIRE Fireseed you crucially depend on instead, if you’d like to rush us.
Which I think is gonna happen anyway, because Red does good plot.
Specifically, pissed off god gets Falst to just yeet rock into the seed cause he’s too far to just skim it with his hands.

(App ate this a couple times, let’s see how many times it shows up in the end.)
Say? if in a moment Dainix will come back in his normal form presumably with clothes on, what’s gonna happen? he’s just gonna appear in a volcano, will he be alright? I know he’s a fire-man and will be fine from the heat, but he’s going to have to climb across volcanic rock and glass while Rachkn and Kendal are fighting and having just regained his body. Will he be able to stand, is Falst going to have to carry him while climbing back out, is he going to be unconscious, if not how is he going to feel about being a rock this whole time, will him and Falst have to share that scarf to avoid being poisoned. I went in to this page being relieved that Dainix is going to be alright than i thought about it and now I’m worried again.
This is all good thinking. Maybe he’ll reconstitute himself into his Crucible form, which is significantly less vulnerable. For all we know, it doesn’t need air/feel pain/walk.
I think it would be funny if Dainix floated up to Rakhn in Crucible form and starts criticizing him for fighting a smaller being while Rakhn futilely tries to attack a flicking flame immune to all his attacks thus allowing Dainix’s friends to sneak away and then fly off saying to Rakhn he wants to talk to cooler people rather then some hot head who wants to fight fire with fire. But what ever Red does will please me.
Huh. The local, volcano-based Ignins have a basalt skin tone and desert-based Ignins have a more sandy skin tone. Do Ignins have “Hot Rock” skin tones the way Elves have “Sky” skin tones and Tess’ people have “Shiny Metal” skin tones?
How toasty do you think Dainix’s Core was at the moment he burnt out? Even once the flames were gone, most stones would have still been super hot at that point. Falst said Dainix was getting colder, so the Core must have started notably warmer. Falst was able to catch it right away, without any apparent pain. Would any of the others have been able to? I think not, except for maybe Kendal and possibly Erin, and only while his fire magic was working.
Here’s some reasoning from my thumbtacks and string zone: If I have my OSP Miscellaneous Myths correct, there was a moment in the Tam Lin video where Bonny Janet is able to hold Tam Lin while he is transformed into both a literal fire and a chunk-of-red-hot-iron. That is specifically because they are lovers, so Tam Lin physically couldn’t hurt her, no matter what form he took.
I’m wondering if that the case with the Ferinheit duo, and whether it would be a different case if it weren’t for their apparent feelings for each other. I think this just might have been Tactical.
This was also the chapter where the squad met The Paladin Champion, who is referred to as Tam on the character page.
This is SUCH cool theory! 😃
I do have a few points to make, though. Erin’s fire magic doesn’t make him fireproof. Red has stated on her tumblr that that is one of the limits to his use of fire magic – he has to be careful not to get burnt. Heat resistance is only available to fire *adapted* people, aka Ignans, which Erin is not (there is a difference between being a mage and being elementally adapted, and the elemental magus has always been an unadapted human).
Also, Red doesn’t go into depth on how physics works in this world, but it *isnt* like in ours. The only primordial making up this world who generates heat is fire, so all sun-heat comes from that. Hence, I think that this means that most hot objects feel hot because they have *tiny* amounts of fire matter in them. Your point still applies, but Dainix lost most — if not all — of his fire matter, and also the rain didn’t his when hitting his first-formed stone. Red seemed quite good with details like that, so she probably would have added that if it was very hot.
That said, I LOVE this theory (even if I don’t purposely subscribe to it) and my points by *no* means disprove it. And it would make a great headcanon, anyway 😄
You’re right, just one small addition: fire is not the only element to make heat. It was a notable plot-point earlier in this chapter that starfire is very, very hot.
Dainix doesn’t contain any starfire or starmetal, so your general point that he would’ve lacked a source of any heat stands.
For mobile readers.

bounding? that’s what I’d call like a dog doing that
Funny enough, I believe the correct term would be catwalk
That’s not an improvised weapon, it’s the venerable Rock in a Sock!
Amen

These gods, I swear. So inconsiderate!

The desperation
The relief of completion
The failure is pain
Well, I didn’t put the lava there. I like to keep my lava to myself.
Maybe the emissaries of Osha (well-known goddess of workplace safety) don’t check this island very often, but those railings do NOT look up to code.
Falst, buddy, you can even smack that god with Dainix if he turned back into his humanoid form.

Rakhn, not now, we’re on an impossible mission. Don’t bother about the music or where it’s coming from.
My poor boy, even with the scarf he is clearly hot, and he has fur which can’t be helping
False talking to egg Dainix is exactly what I didn’t know I needed

Should I be concerned about the fact that there are tears in the bag holding Dainix?

Amazing comment. No notes, love it.
the staff on the left guard’s hand isn’t aligned through the hand and it’s killing me
nooo my children
Falst’s face talking to rock Dainix is
