The lines of water follow the Champion as he flies backwards. He cries out as he is slammed against the mast, water surrounding him and cracking into ice, freezing him in place.
“Erin! A-are you–” Alinua breaks off as Erin staggers to the side, magic fading.
“Think about this very carefully, Paladin,” he snaps, striding forwards. Clamping a hand on his arm, his magic slipping throughout the ship again. “LOOK at me,” Erin says, stopping right in front of the frozen Champion. “If I were under your enemy’s control, which I am NOT– do you think I would even NEED his power to stop you? Do you think HE would exercise restraint? I am the Elemental Magus, and the fact that you are still alive should speak volumes!
“You’re far from helpless, I’ll give you that. But whatever gives you your power can’t match six real Primordials! Set down your delusions for a minute and open your–”
The Champion’s eyes open, staring angrily at Erin’s with blue irises ringed with a sclera of black.
“…your eyes…!” Erin falters as he remembers the eyes that occur when he gets taken over by the Void Dragon, the same as the Champion’s now, but with yellow irises.
So I was thinking that Champion has now been possessed by L.D., but looking back at the first pages he appears, I think I agree with some other ppl that L.D. and the Champion work more in tandem, rather than V.D. and Erin’s either-you-or-me-are-in-control relationship. I was thinking at first that the Champion’s eyes were white with blue irises in those panels but they’re the same as now.
But Erin (and so probably V.D.) doesn’t know that, so V.D.’s prooobably gonna panic and do something stupid upon seeing those eyes
Also… Erin… that was a poorly aimed speech. after having all this evidence, don’t insinuate that the Paladin’s god doesn’t exist… And maybe lean more towards the “If V.D. was in control you’d be dead” rather than “I can kill you with or without V.D.’s power so just be grateful you’re alive”
Erin is acutely aware that he is the main character, and knows he has to monologue within the same panel as the recipient of the monologue (for maximum dramatic effect).
Pinning the stranger against the mast,
The wave freezes to ice.
“Set down your delusions for a minute and open-!”
Erin rages, trying to be nice.
Strange eyes open, slit-pupiled, black,
With irises of sudden blue.
Six elements Erin channels, but from his eyes
The purple of the dragon shines through.
Long time reader, first time commenter! It’s seemed like the Floof Squad (a lot of Erin pushing himself but regardless) have been able to disarm the Paladin but after this will they get the upper hand after all? Also it seems like the Light Dragon can possess followers/worshipers similar to voidy??? With the power boost to match?? But is this willingly considering how the L. Dragon is revered?? I’m so excited to see more!!
He’s looked better. Still, when Erin’s ideas work, they work. That was an efficient way to subdue him.
This is more or less how I thought the argument would go: if Erin WERE under Walter’s control, that fight would have gone very differently from minute one. The boat would probably be a black smear, for one thing. And if the Lady doesn’t hold her Paladins under complete control, it stands to reason Walter can’t either…mind you, only the Paladin knows that both are real, something I occasionally forget.
I was wondering if Erin knew what his eyes looked like when the VD was in the driver’s seat, and if he’d be able to make that connection…of *course* he makes it at the worse possible moment XD
Im glad the eyes are confirmed to be diegetic and not just a design choice for our benefit. I had a theory very early on that we’d have an arc where VD quietly possesses Erin and tries secretly leading the gang away from their goal and toward a cave entrance before they catch on and subdue him again. But the eyes are too clear a tell for this to be possible, unless he can suppress the change.
So, we already noticed the paladins fashion sense of wearing a long sleeved shirt, a brown vest, a cloak and fabulous fluffy hair, all of which looks like a light copy of Eren, right?
Erin, dear, when trying to talk down a dangerous stranger who thinks you’re under the control of an evil entity maybe focus a little more on “I still have enough control to exercise restraint/mercy” and a little less on “I COULD DESTROY YOU AND YOUR PUNY FAKE ‘GOD’ IN AN INSTANT”
Hubris. Currently affects one, maybe two people in the Helm-West continents. It can cost the bearer friends, family, and any chance at a normal social life.

That’s what I thought too for a second but Erin’s good. He’s just realizing the sudden eye change means the Champion’s not the one in control anymore and this encounter just got a lot more dangerous.
On 2.1.35 on the last panel all the characters shown attempted to take shortcuts of a sort. Yes even Alinua if you count it during before she stops fighting her magic.
I love how Red plays with convention in interesting ways in the story and turns it in it’s side. Her art style is fabulous and has done some creative bits with comic page format. I want to ask her to marry me even if she is too good for me and already spoken for but that would be selfish and possibly put limits on her which I do not to fetter her with.
I love all the parallels between Erin and VD Walter, particularly on this page, where Erin refuses to shut up despite Kendal’s warnings — just like VD Walter refused to during the Zuurith fight
I like the floofy hair and all the glowy magic effects :3 The way different sound effects from different sources have varying colors and visual attributes is also neat.
Erin’s restrained Kaiba to the ship’s mast, and Kaiba can form a light sword with immense cutting power. I have a bad feeling about this.
Oh, Erin. You had the chance to use logic and reasoning to convince the Champion that you are against V.D. too, and are taking steps to stop him. Instead you used it to hype up your own power, call the Champion delusional, and once again claim, indirectly but clearly, that his god is fake. Whatever happens next is your own fault.
I understand the gist of what Erin’s attempting; if this fight wages much longer, there’s a good chance he’ll lose control of the spell and doom the ship. Even if they win against the Champion, the victory would be pyrrhic. Better to try and deescalate the situation from a position of power, yet clearly showing restraint.
Also in Erin’s defence, I don’t think he anticipated the Paladins arriving so soon. He figured they knew of his existence back in Zuurith and based his estimates from that; he didn’t know about the Champion being informed all the way back in arc 1, chapter 7.
V.D.’s comments about L.D. and his “other”, the archive’s records showing L.D. existed back during the Ancient’s time, and now the Champion’s eyes are strikingly similar to a pair Erin knows well. Erin doesn’t want to admit it, but more and more evidence is pointing towards L.D. being a real deity and not born of mass delusion.
Why would V.D. talk of a being who didn’t exist foiling his plans? How could L.D.’s powers be present so early in history before most gods? And now eyes so similar to V.D.’s it can’t be a coincidence. Maybe it’s Erin who should be opening his eyes.
There goes my theory that the weight and complexity of Erin’s spell would keep him frozen in place for most of the fight. The fact that he can stall a storm, hold back a speeding ship, and still casually throw an ocean at this guy like nothing? It’s…kinda terrifying actually. ‘Cause despite breaking a sweat and faltering once, he seems otherwise unaffected (until he inevitably passes out of course).
Honestly. First words out of my mouth were, “And he’s still holding the gd spell?!” His control and strength of will are impressive. He’s a master of his craft.
Unfortunately, he’s also 19, and balances out his impressive moments with impulsiveness. It’s part of what makes him interesting, I think: he really IS that good. But it means it never enters his head that there might be a better way he hasn’t thought of.
And the kid has no luck at all, so things will always go wrong in the worst way at the worst possible moment XD
“hey maybe asking a bunch of questions the void dragon would already know the answer to would help prove my innocence”
that would absolutely NOT be why he enters Overzealous Researcher Mode but the fact the logic is at least partially sound amuses me.
burying my head in my hands and giving an almighty groan of utter pain because OF COURSE Erin would say that, you dumb idiot! oh my gods! WHY?!?!
damn, dramatic irony is absolute agony. Unless you’re the writer (in which case it’s incrediblely fun)
Now to make a video matching these lyrics for Erin and his Pal(adin).
“And at last I see the light
And it’s like the fog has lifted
And at last I see the light
And it’s like the sky is new
And it’s warm and real and bright
And the world has somehow shifted
All at once everything looks different
Now that I see you”
You know I wonder why the paladin has those eyes because that only happens for Erin when he’s being controlled but when we see Michael earlier with dragon eyes he doesn’t seem controlled. Very wierd.
I wouldn’t count on it. There’s a gleam there that wasn’t there before, and remember, Erin just slammed him against the mast. Considering that neither Michael nor the Light Dragon seem to have twigged to the fact that Erin isn’t actively being possessed, the Light Dragon just saw the Void Dragon attack her champion. She’s going to be feeling more than a little angry and protective right about now…
The only way to know for sure, though, is to see who speaks come Friday. But my money remains on Lady Light.
It’s entirely possible that the Lady and the Champion have a way to share control, with one hand on the wheel each. We shouldn’t use the Void Dragon as a standard for draconic abilities, given that he is the epitome of evil. I wouldn’t be surprised if his style of draconic possession is way more aggressive than the Lady’s, especially considering her telepathic abilities.
Despite Erin’s hubris, of course he still manages to attack L.D.’s Champion in the *perfect* way. He’s always moved his hands to summon his hard-light constructs, and Erin has just bound those suckers in ice. It’s quite possible his hands are fully encased. That is extremely clever.
*Possibly* perfect. Erin’s bound his foe to a very specific part of the ship ( https://comicaurora.com/aurora/2-2-4/ ) that may become a bad life choice for everyone aboard the vessel.
And his hands aren’t actually encased in ice, his arms are just immobilized. You can see his right hand in panels 3 & 6, and in panel 6 you can also kinda see his left hand, which doesn’t look like it’s iced. So he could probably summon some light and cut through the ice if he wanted to.
But idk
Aurora does kind of make me act like a crack addict.
I’m absolutely feral when I don’t get my fix,
My high is gone way too fast,
and I am willing to suck a (metaphorical) d!ck to get more.
Weird. Went back and checked, I think those dragon eyes ARE his normal eyes. Maybe his glowing white eyes are a combat thing?
In that scene they glow white only when he fights that cave crawler. When he dismisses his magic his eyes go back to black. What’s odd is when he powers back up and flies off they stay black. When he communicates with The Lady, still black. The change doesn’t seem to denote his emotional state: he’s level-headed, pragmatic, and empathetic inside and outside a fight. Nor does the change seem to indicate any interference from LD, the format of the speech bubbles tells us he wasn’t possessed any point. As well when she’s using other’s eyes only their irises glow blue-white.
Here’s my guess:
His dragon eyes might just be the result of his status as champion (and possibly vessel) of the Light Dragon and NOTHING MORE. While Team Void’s partnership is parasitic, Team Light’s is symbiotic. That’s why the Champion has dragon eyes all the time and why his speech bubbles have that edge to them. He’s never her puppet, they always work in tandem. However with Erin, it’s either all him or all Void Dragon. Seeing the Champion’s eyes, Erin might assume all dragon possession is the same and the Champion is just as trapped as Erin is.
The glow effects! The reflections! The transparent ice! The water splatters! It’s all incredible.
On another note, we haven’t ever seen the Champion’s eyes while neither glowy nor draconic, right? And his speech about the trickery of the void dragon makes me think that his eyes are *always* draconic, always showing signs of possession. If the light dragon’s influence never leaves, it would make sense that he would think the void dragon’s couldn’t be suppressed.
Yet another point towards “Falst has draconic eyes, not feline ones”
Oh wow. That worked better than I thought it would… for now. It was a good idea to immobilize Michael in ice, though I don’t expect that to last long.
I’m torn between “damn, Erin, that’s some impressive magical ability and skill under extreme pressure” and “monologuing is dangerous and you are overextending yourself so bad, please work with and rely on your friends more please for the love of Jiya.” I both want to shake him and wrap the poor lad in a blanket.
The eyes! It finally clicks for him… I think! I’m curious to see how that realization plays out in the next few pages.
I’m realizing this is pretty much the first time we’ve seen Erin be worn out by using his own powers… something tells me that at some point in the next fight he’s just going to pass out or something.
I’m pretty sure that the Walter eyes are a visual representation of Erin connecting the dots between Michael and himself, but I’d like to imagine that it’s actually the Void dragon absolutely losing it seeing his death coming like a freight train.
Blasted at the *end*, we still have that blast happening at the beginning. So we still have the potential to keep up a streak of “every page has a blasting” if it happens again next page.
Okay, idk if this has been said before, but I have a theory.
Erin’s shirt change wasn’t simply to prove that he changed his clothes; it was thematically significant. Notice how the paladin’s outfit is nearly identical to Erin’s except for the color scheme: The paladin has a white shirt, and Erin has a black one. The obvious conclusion to draw is that it represents their corresponding dragons. But still, on top of that, I think the fact that Erin didn’t start with a black shirt is meant to imply that he’s slowly getting more comfortable with the dragon and/or it’s taking more hold of him.
Or you know, maybe years into the comic Red realized it would be fun to have their colors match their dragons so she decided to change it and I’m just thinking abt it too much, but I think I’ll leave this as my head cannon
Yeah. On a similar note, the Paladin has white hair??for some reason?? I don’t know if it’s the same principle as Life changing Alinua’s eye color, or if Red just decided because teeheehee color scheme, but now I can’t stop watching Erin’s hair and eyes.
To save you the excursion, no, neither has gotten darker as far as I can tell. His eyes are still as indigo as ever (except when possessed or casting, of course), and yes, his hair was brownish in the first panel and it’s black now, but it was also black way back in 1.5.24 and brownish in 2.3.1, so it’s CONSISTENTLY inconclusive – I think black in daylight and brownish by fire/magic light. Erin’s black hair is probably just character design, but I can’t help myself.
I still half think one day, as per corruption arc, Erin’s hair and eyes will turn permanently black, and we won’t even notice.
I was just checking back and binging the comic again because at first my curiosity was peaked on how, or if, Erin ever learned on screen about the eye thing. But now I realize that we might get a chekov’s gun in regards to the electricity. I’m pretty sure our white dragon champion is frost-bound to the *exact spot* that Tess accidentally zapped Erin from on the center mast, and there’s a good chance that could come into play somehow.
Last Monday I was hoping they would be able to negotiate with the Paladin. Last Friday I changed my mind and decided Erin should just sink the ship. Now you’ve managed to give me hope for negotiation again. I’m pretty sure next week I’ll be jumping ship again.
This is great. I love being toyed with.
What precisely is Erin doing with all six elements to protect the ship? Let’s see if it can’t be mapped:
Water: Stilling the sea in a short radius about the ship
Wind: A circulating dome of air to clear the storm in a short radius
Stone: Holding the metal ship in place, and possibly repelling any more flaming rocks.
Fire: Uh…heating the air to prevent storm clouds from manifesting nearby? And maybe repelling further flaming rock attacks.
Lightning: Possibly preventing lightning strikes?
Life: Uh…
I think Stone and Fire are holding back the flaming rocks, you’re right about Water and Wind(they both also are part of clouds, so Erin’s just using them to push back the clouds as well as calming the seas with water)
I think you’re also right about Lightning, preventing any stray lightning strikes from hitting the ship
I would think Life would be used along with Stone to hold the ship steady, and maybe prevent it from moving anywhere
Cal might also be right too, that just focusing on all six elements is easier than leaving one out
No, that was a woman, the first elemental magus which means shes Erin’s ancestor and a million years ago or something. Also her hair is peach colored and the Champion’s is white

OOOOOO boi here it comes!!!!!
im scawed .M.
wow! I’m early for once!
Erin is wobbling 🙁
And the foil has been revealed in all his glory
Someday Erin will learn to at least stand back while he monologues.
Erin is acutely aware that he is the main character, and knows he has to monologue within the same panel as the recipient of the monologue (for maximum dramatic effect).
Come water, come ice, be a shield for the speech
Erin calls out with logic but meats eyes white as bleach
Pinning the stranger against the mast,
The wave freezes to ice.
“Set down your delusions for a minute and open-!”
Erin rages, trying to be nice.
Strange eyes open, slit-pupiled, black,
With irises of sudden blue.
Six elements Erin channels, but from his eyes
The purple of the dragon shines through.
Slammed against the mast
From Erin’s powerful blast
Eye-to-eye at last
Nice! Good to see you in print again!
OCC, I’ve never been big on rhymes and poetry, but this one got me. That couplet slaps.
Thanks! Glad I could add something to your day.
And also *meets, curse you nonsensical English spelling rules!

And now it’s time for a rousing chorus of Erin’s theme-song of ‘My Hubris’ to play…
He’s looked better. Still, when Erin’s ideas work, they work. That was an efficient way to subdue him.

Maybe “Erin” just suddenly gets really into sunglasses
Somehow, I do not think VD is that subtle.
No color change is just for our benefit
So, we already noticed the paladins fashion sense of wearing a long sleeved shirt, a brown vest, a cloak and fabulous fluffy hair, all of which looks like a light copy of Eren, right?
Oh wow, I only saw this after writing my theory below XD oops
OMG I never noticed that!

Forgive the poor boy. He’s suffering from a terrible disease the lads today are calling “hubris.”
This is an urgent appeal.

Actually, I half expect Erin to be like, “Wait… your eyes… Is the Lady REAL?! That’s impossible!”
I’ld rather eat crow! (groans and face palms gladly accepted!)
And now everyone has to jump on Erin before Voidy messes things up for the crew…
That’s what I thought too for a second but Erin’s good. He’s just realizing the sudden eye change means the Champion’s not the one in control anymore and this encounter just got a lot more dangerous.
Yeah, the yellow eyes in the background look more like a memory than an imminent occurrence.
I checked Champion’s first appearance and he is in control of himself when his eyes stop glowing, so it must mean else
*something else
Thanks for the wonderful insights!
Hello kids, today we’ll take a moment to talk a little about the ancient greek’s favourite fatal flaw of earth-shattering hubris and its consequences.
Aurora Question #5: What details throughout the comic have you noticed that you loved?
slightly random but I find the way Red draws clouds to be very aesthetically pleasing
That one bit in chapter 8 (?) when Kendal befriended a squirrel.
OOOOOH ! Im glad this page wasn’t published on a Friday XD
“My X is a Y” Season One Episode One: They Meet Again!
Prediction for next page: Erin enters Overzealous Researcher Mode
“hey maybe asking a bunch of questions the void dragon would already know the answer to would help prove my innocence”
that would absolutely NOT be why he enters Overzealous Researcher Mode but the fact the logic is at least partially sound amuses me.
burying my head in my hands and giving an almighty groan of utter pain because OF COURSE Erin would say that, you dumb idiot! oh my gods! WHY?!?!
damn, dramatic irony is absolute agony. Unless you’re the writer (in which case it’s incrediblely fun)
What’s the problem, The Champion was being very unreasonable and Erin is in a highly stressful situation
He’s likely ruined his attempt at reason by seriously insulting Michael and his patron.
It’s my birthday and I just got a new aurora page as a gift. Best birthday ever
It was at this moment he realized……
He was wrong about the other dragon and that’s it
“god is real and she hates me” lol
And he looks at me…
And I look at him…
And he looks at me…
And I look at him…
And he says “I’m sorry,
“Why should I care again?”
Now to make a video matching these lyrics for Erin and his Pal(adin).
“And at last I see the light

And at last I see the light
And it’s like the sky is new
And it’s warm and real and bright

Tangled is my absolute favorite movie and it has been since I was a wee child. How dare you. I love it.
What big eyes you have, Grandma.
You know I wonder why the paladin has those eyes because that only happens for Erin when he’s being controlled but when we see Michael earlier with dragon eyes he doesn’t seem controlled. Very wierd.
“Could a possessed man do THIS?”
“Sorry, Michael’s not in at the moment, can I take a message?”
–The Light Dragon, probably
Look at 1-7-33, he is still in control
I wouldn’t count on it. There’s a gleam there that wasn’t there before, and remember, Erin just slammed him against the mast. Considering that neither Michael nor the Light Dragon seem to have twigged to the fact that Erin isn’t actively being possessed, the Light Dragon just saw the Void Dragon attack her champion. Erin: “I could kill you if I wated to. I don’t want to, but I could if I did. Which makes me one if the good guys. Do you see the logic paladin?”

But idk
I am curious what a conversion between the void and light dragons will be like
Probably a ton of insults and accusations as they beat each other to a pulp.
Aurora does kind of make me act like a crack addict.
I’m absolutely feral when I don’t get my fix,
My high is gone way too fast,
and I am willing to suck a (metaphorical) d!ck to get more.
Glad I’m not the only one
ohhhhhh dear
This was exactly my theory but I had no clue how to put it into words. Thank you so much for reading my mind.
this isn’t going to go well
The glow effects!
I see that Weird Al’s Trapped in the Drive-Thru reference.
Oooh shiver me timbers
i am extremely concerned but OH MAN the first panel goes HARDDD
When the abbess looks at you, the void looks back.
I’m pretty sure that the Walter eyes are a visual representation of Erin connecting the dots between Michael and himself, but I’d like to imagine that it’s actually the Void dragon absolutely losing it seeing his death coming like a freight train.
Why can’t it be both?
Paladin: *dramatic, offended gasp.* you knocked the dragon out of me!
I appreciate the restraint in not making it *four* pages which end with someone getting absolutely blasted
Blasted at the *end*, we still have that blast happening at the beginning. So we still have the potential to keep up a streak of “every page has a blasting” if it happens again next page.
I mean, I feel like Erin’s worldview just got blasted. He certainly looks knocked off his feet.
Erin’s hair is purple and the Champion’s hair might be a hint to a close relation to Huracan, because Ancient hair was white or blonde-ish
Pardon but Erin could be wearing black shirts to better hide the Void Dragon’s mark on him. That’s my two ents at least
Erin realizes the light dragon is realllllll! Part two. this will be so much fun.
Look…. Look with your special eyes
Life: Uh…
I was wondering what Life was doing there too. Maybe it’s just easier to channel all six elements than to channel five and hold one back?
I think Stone and Fire are holding back the flaming rocks, you’re right about Water and Wind(they both also are part of clouds, so Erin’s just using them to push back the clouds as well as calming the seas with water)
I think you’re also right about Lightning, preventing any stray lightning strikes from hitting the ship
I would think Life would be used along with Stone to hold the ship steady, and maybe prevent it from moving anywhere
Cal might also be right too, that just focusing on all six elements is easier than leaving one out
Life could be just to keep him going?
I think I just realized that the champion is the same guy that got possessed at the end of 0.1.2
No, that was a woman, the first elemental magus which means shes Erin’s ancestor and a million years ago or something. Also her hair is peach colored and the Champion’s is white
They made eye contact! Is this the beginning of a meet-cute? jkjk …Unless?
This is the first time Red’s comment has ever made me actually laugh out loud. Well done.
Erin’s either gonna kill the Paladin and sink the ship, or the Collector’s gonna show up.
