1: This person almost certainly has a tragic backstory.
2: Anti-ferin bigotry seems intentionally similar to real-world bigotry: portrayed as a feral underclass, widely either exploited for low-wage (or no-wage) grunt work or regarded as a threat that needs to be exterminated, bigotry is continued out of tradition alone, bigots claim ‘they’ll breed us out of existence’, or that the victims are wholly inhuman (even if their physicality isn’t fully human, their mental capacity is, so they’re people all the same), victims often form insular communities and/or are left with lifelong emotional trauma…
Basically it’s a Big Yikes all around, and now I’m even more curious as to what this person could want with Erin’s textbooks
This may be one of the best portrayals of racism in a fantasy world. (That came out wrong) the racism is unfounded, based solely on fear. This is far better than other attempts at racial allegory, where the discrimination has some logic to it. (See predators in Zootopia) Here there is none of that. The Ferin are feared and stereotyped and exploited, with in the past having attempts at racial cleansing, only due to prejudice. Even the logic given for the fear is weak and easily debunked. This is brilliant, just brilliant.
Maybe it’s just because I’ve watched too much OSP (though let’s be real, there’s no such thing), but the INSTANT Falst opened his mouth all I could hear in my mind’s ear was Red’s voice for Sun Wukong. Alinua also has Red’s voice, and Kendal distinctly sounds like Blue. Still not sure about Erin’s voice.
Oof. That voice is irreconcilable with the way I imagine him to sound…
Think the voice actor for Robin from Teen Titans (disclaimer: I’ve never actually seen seen TT, I just know his voice from a couple one-off characters in Avatar: The Last Airbender), but much smoother and less nasally.
Idk Tamaki has a lot of self-important monologues and Ed has a lot of indignant outbursts so it just felt really easy to just slip that in.
I always imagine either that or something more androgynous and almost childlike (but not a childish way if that makes any sense)
Wait! In panel 6, Kendal started a sentence before Falst cut him off. What can we read into “But then… you couldn’t have been the one-”
Does Vash know this Ferin? Also, who says that he can’t be un-ferined by Ali/Life? If there was even something that could have helped him in Erin’s bag, how would he fix it without a life mage? The ferin page even said that “there are no ferin mages” so he’d have to find one somehow, and Erin and Ali are the closest mages, so can’t he ask for help? Also, now I doubt that Falst made the chrimera, since he just said “the monster”, not “my monster.”
The green crystal on the cover for chapter 9 is likely a life lacrima of some sort; my guess is either for healing, for plant growth, for chimeric mutation, or perhaps a prototype for a ferin ‘cure’ (perhaps this person wants to integrate into non-ferin society, by any means necessary, and stealing Erin’s textbooks might help them further their research?)
Just wondering: is “Falst” this guy’s official name, or is it something decided by the fandom? If it’s his actual name, where did it say? I feel like I missed something obvious.
Also commenting to say that I’m enjoying this story so much! 🙂
Falst is the file name of one of the sketches on the sketches page. Specifically the lion ferin sketch, so people assumed that is his name. Red latter confirmed it when asked.
Calling it now, next panel will be Kendal using his other hand to grab Falst’s and he’ll have a big “Oh crap” expression as Kendal throws him.
Interesting lore on the Ferin, and glad to have seen some Ferin accepted within the city of Vash. Still it makes things more confusing as to why he’s taking those books as Ferin can’t use magic.
I struggle to put voices to these characters but I do imagine lion-boy as Red’s Sun Wukong too. (Erin is Slyvie from Epithet Erased, still not sold on what Kendal and Ali sound like).
Alt TL:DR: Rogue Floof is amused by Sword Floofs paragon/protagonistiness, apparently he knows enough about the Power of Friendship to not want the rest of the FloofCrew™️ to come fighting. Rogue Floof is also concerned that Sword Floof doesn’t sleep, that’s a good friend you got right there
Excuse me WHERE are you going with Erin’s bag did you hear NOTHING of what we just said about how bookbags are sacred territory
exactly! the book police are searching for you falst!
I don’t think making someone fall from the top of a tree classifies as a “break”, Falst :/
Maybe he just wants to give Kendal a hand up!
I highly doubt it.
Wait, Falst is a lion… I’ve just realized:
LONG LIVE THE KING
*drops him into the abyss*
is that a lion king reference?
Please don’t tell me kids nowadays never saw it, I’m not that old ;-;
The lion king is in my top 5 favourite movies, so I don’t know just because of the memes
Considering the memes? Don’t worry, they have
Oh I just noticed! He left claw marks in the tree in the second panel!
Would you expect anything less from Red?
Nope, it’s exactly on par with her usual quality of work and this level of detail makes me happy
Have you seen that the character page has change?
That injury should’ve cracked more than just ribs, dude…
*hard cut to Erin losing his f***ing mind over Kendal’s weirdness and the missing bookbag*
I’M losing my mind over the bookbag… but that’s to be expected.
So, having read the new lore page:

(cinemasins voice) That’s racist. *ding*
…did I accidentally say something racist, or is this a joke?
That was addressed to the whole bigotry thing in general, not something you did.
Wait, is Red accidentally doing something racist that I’m not noticing??
No, I was talking about the discrimination against ferin
Okay, just making sure.
(More material for r/whoosh, I guess…)
Just read the new lore page, I can now see why the new chapter is named what it is.

Erin sounds like Edward Elric
Which version, Japanese or English?
English. Same dude who voices Tamaki in Ouran High School Host Club (I really don’t want to mention him by name but I like the voice)
Oof. That voice is irreconcilable with the way I imagine him to sound…

Couldn’t have been the one to make the chimera.
By realizing falst is a ferin kendal also realized there was no way he made the chimera, becalse ferin can’t use magic.
…unless they have a lacrima.
Wait,wait,wait.Beauty and the beast?
Ok but when he says “ka-HAHA” in the second panel all I can hear in my head are the koroks in Breath of the Wild going “Yahaha! You found me!”
“Long. Live. The King!”
Just wondering: is “Falst” this guy’s official name, or is it something decided by the fandom? If it’s his actual name, where did it say? I feel like I missed something obvious.

Oops, this was supposed to be a reply to CerylH. Oh, well.
Oh, okay. Thanks 🙂
whAT DO YOU MEAN THAT’S ALL FOR NOW
Oh is that alt text? I can’t get it on mobile 😛 what does it say?
“silly new guy! kendal’s never slept a day in his life! that’s probably healthy right”
The thief is a Sun Wu Kong archetype, I’m calling it now!
Calling it now, next panel will be Kendal using his other hand to grab Falst’s and he’ll have a big “Oh crap” expression as Kendal throws him.

The hovertext is actually relevant now
well payed
*played
I can’t type
*gasp*
yes I just realized that
Alinua is still the best caricature.
TL;DR: Lionboy mentions Vashn’t’s shatter resistance, other treetop banter. Lionboy bolts.
Alt TL:DR: Rogue Floof is amused by Sword Floofs paragon/protagonistiness, apparently he knows enough about the Power of Friendship to not want the rest of the FloofCrew™️ to come fighting. Rogue Floof is also concerned that Sword Floof doesn’t sleep, that’s a good friend you got right there
Addition, he then gets Mufasaed and Rouge Floof book it before the cavalry arrives
Alt text: silly new guy! kendal’s never slept a day in his life! that’s probably healthy right
(Silly lion, sleep is for kids! Wait, Kendal’s technically a kid.)
Not much of an evil monologue, that
But this new guy seems ready to leave, like a cat
