why am i surprised by the magma eyeball. we’ve SEEN his crucible form before
also rest in peace drann (i think) only known for a solid 3 pages but you will be dearly missed
HOLY FUCK!!!!! How have I not found out this existed before, I should have watched that episode of Trope Talk months ago because this is fucking AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!
I’ll be honest, i genuinely didn’t consider that the eye was from a prior injury, i always just rode with the assumption that somehow Dainix’s power hurt him in that first attack and as a result his eye suffered OR someone in an effort to stop him in the initial stages of burning up hurt him badly enough that it stuck.
Also RIP Dainix’s eye and Drann, they were so young… and also i could swear that there’s some level of glass or smooth stone molding involved in the settlement behind them which if so *chefs kiss*
@SerifStones
That wasn’t just your assumption, it’s what Tahraim said about the eye during their therapy session. I don’t think getting it scratched out is the whole story…
Do you think Dainix considered changing his name to Danix after he lost an eye? … … I’ll see myself out.
See the volcano face on the first panel? You can see the Obsidian Ghoul hands erupting from it. Hammers home the fact Dainix and his group had no warning of the attack and no room to manoeuvre.
My prediction about the transformation being a little intentional was wrong; looks like the panic of their situation combined with pain from his major injury is what triggered the demon to manifest properly.
So, that’s Dainix’s home off to the right of panel 2; looks nice, cool and welcoming colour scheme for a desert settlement.
Prediction for next week: Demon-Dainix comes out, but I’m unsure how effective it’ll be on the ghouls. Dainix says fire doesn’t hurt them, but maybe soulfire might.
Then again next Monday’s page might be of the aftereffects of his rampage; since Dainix is the narrator he might not remember the battle and skip to after he reverts to normal.
Oof, those claws must be sharp to be piercing through wyrmsilk like it’s nothing. Just adds a little bit of extra terror onto the already near-unstoppable ghouls
Oh noooo!
I mean this explains why Dainix felt so guilty about the first one, too. It probably just turned a bad situation worse. (As Evil Tree said, it’s unclear if it could even hurt the ghoul, although it could certainly hirt his teammates)
On a side note, I wonder what those spheres Dainix is holding are. Smoke bombs? Water bombs? He was clearly planning to do something with them, anyone have any ideas?
And @DisastrousGoth. I mean it’s a good pun, but aaaaaa noooooo!! T^T
Judging by the box text, Red was kind of sick of us theorists repeatedly anticipating getting to see Dainix’s right eye, and I think I know why; it seems that it had always been a normal eye his whole life. I’m still thinking there’s a chance that the first transformation permanently changed the scar to leave some tiny indication of what lies beneath, especially considering that the socket is where the soulfire first erupted from; but it’s also possible that the scar is just cauterized, with no hint of soulfire peeking through. And it’s looking quite certain that there’s no fire rune innately present anywhere on Dainix to mirror Alinua’s life rune birthmark, proving that no active influence gave Dainix this power, meaning Fire and, by extension, the other four non-Life self-sacrificed primordials, are well and truly dead; Life’s circumstances are unique.
Okay, this is actually a good thing, because it finally removed a lingering worry from my mind; Dainix most likely did not murder anyone while berserk. We’ve already seen that some vestige of his consciousness remains when he’s transformed, as indicated by the fact that he only went after the possessed Erin on the battlefield; The Void Dragon was the threat in that situation, and so Dainix tried to destroy the threat and no one else. He stopped in recognition of a friend when Kendal intervened, and he didn’t hurt anyone during the hour-long trek to the ruins. So if he didn’t murder his friends during the second transformation, he almost certainly didn’t the first time; the obsidian ghouls were the threat in this situation, and so Dainix tried to destroy the threat and no one else.
A’ight, that pic of his eye bursting into magma and shit as he presumably begins to transform into LIVING FIRE for the first time? That is fucking cool my dude. That’s some Yu Yu Hakusho ‘…Kuramaaaaaa??’ levels of oh-shit right there.
Did you know:
Typically it is not recommended for a crossbow to left cocked as it can cause the string to stretch out or break.
(Danix has a cocked crossbow so that is why I am mentioning it, he probably cocked to fire at the obsidian ghoul despite how little of an effect it would have panic causes poor decisions)
So now we know about his right eye: it was a normal eye before, but when his fire form was first released that was the part of him that was damaged and caused it to burst out. Also the timing of the reveal of obsidian ghouls is perfect for the spooky season!
Evil Tree, DisastrousGoth:
Some say puns are the lowest form of humor, but I disagree!
@TheUnknownGame remains to be seen. it’s possible that what we’re dealing with is survivor’s guilt (if Dainix didn’t save his friends/didn’t beat the ghouls). ESPECIALLY if he doesn’t know for sure whether or not he killed them himself while he was transformed (e.g. if he wakes up and literally everyone/everything around him is dead, then the logical conclusion is… hm…). BUT that doesn’t rule out the possibility that he was too panicked and disoriented to maintain control of his new form, and really did end up hurting/killing people because of that
If I had a nickel for the web comics I read that updated today with a character loosing an eye, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.
alright since everyone is talking about the dainix eye situation-
I think most of it is blood, and then there’s fire in the middle. Like on the surface it was just normal blood but the claw slash went deeper than that.
It seems no one is considering Dainix’s left eye, it’s not reflecting the right eye
It looks like the cracked, fire burning through effect we saw on his skin.
I have considered that it may be a reflection of the Magma Ghoul;
I dunno mebbe?
I personally think the ¨magma¨ in Danix’s eye is not magma at all. first of all, he was most likely hit by the hard shell of the creature (specifically the claws) and I don’t think any of the creature’s molten core would have splashed out to hit his eye. I think instead it’s blood beginning the process of turning into soulfire. it makes sense in the context- blood is already spilling out of the open wound and he is turning into his soulfire form. the implications of this are also fun, because if his blood turns to soulfire first and we see molten cracks on Danix’s skin before he transforms it suggests that his insides turn soulfire mode first before converting (or perhaps just burning away) his outer shell. all of this begs the all important question:
Is Danix’s blood flammable?
furthermore elaborating on the flammability of Danix, does he have higher heat and burn resistance, if such things can affect him at all? if his blood is flammable outside of his body is the resulting fire soulfire or just normal fire? can Danix purposefully set his own blood outside of his body aflame? the questions are many and im too tired to speculate the answers.
well, that sure is one cool monster. on a side note,
HOLY CRAP IS THAT A RIGHT EYE belonging to danix from the comic strip aurora? couldnt be. hes to cool to have a right eye.
HOLY SHIT HE HAS A RIGHT EYE
For mobile readers.
Alt-text: rip right eye, we hardly knew ye

“The fire’s still there, isn’t it? Just under the skin.”
“Of course. You are a Crucible. You ARE the fire.”
aurora/1-16-10/
As it turns out, it was always there, just under the skin.

A hideous monster from deep down triggering
His losing control, the effects still lingering

Well, now we know how was *left* with one.
Well yeah that’s what happens when you lose your depth perception, dainix
“There was a FIRE FIGHT!!!”
Oh hey look Dainix has a crossbow
Oof, those claws must be sharp to be piercing through wyrmsilk like it’s nothing. Just adds a little bit of extra terror onto the already near-unstoppable ghouls
Oh hi Kyana. Didn’t think I’d see you here.
Oh noooo!

Everything on this page is so well drawn. RIP Dainix’s teammates.
There once was a boy of fire
Who told of danger dire.
He wanted silk spools
But got obsidian ghouls
Which awakened his hidden ire.

RIGHT EYE REVEAL RIGHT EYE REVEAL
If it’s blurry, get glasses. Oh sorry a monocle

To Sig and bottled bluebells:
Not sure that’s magma…Well, some of it might be, but not all of it.
Ow

TL;DR: Eye reveal!
Instructions to puller in EverQuest: If you do pull a bunch of mobs, die away from us.
I wait for Monday for more story revelations…
So Dainix is going into Super Saiyan Firebender mode. Can’t wait to see what happens next.
If I had a nickel for the web comics I read that updated today with a character loosing an eye, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.
Pour one out for Drann 🙁
if i slashed out someones eye and they were filled with magma i would be really really really scared for probably 3 seconds before i die
Oh my god, a right eye on Dainix, I didn’t know it existed.
Drann :'(
I’m with @Skye I don’t think that’s magma coming out of Dainix’s eye
@Skye @storylineobsessed Looks to me like it’s blood and soulfire.

“After that, things got… blurry.”
Kudos to the writing here. That’s one deliciously grotesque and brilliant phrasing. So much said in few words. Bravo.
well, that sure is one cool monster. on a side note,

CUT THROUGH THE HEAR! AND YOU’RE TO BLAME! YOU GIVE LAVA A BAD!
Don’t know why but this put into my head as soon as I saw that first panel. RIP Dan and dainix’ eye
Obsidian ghouls and volcano wyrms that produce fireproof silk. I’m taking this lore and putting it into my home game and nobody is going to stop me.
