Meanwhile, across the wall, they discuss
Dainix’s connection to magic-
His family had known he was closed to the elements,
They found it annoying but not tragic.
Erin, taking notes, asks if they sought out treatment.
His transition was a higher priority,
Dainix explains, adding, “Whatever this is…
I think it was born with me.”
“I suspect that’s accurate,” Erin muses,
Carefully examining the claim,
As Dainix remembers the second time he lost control,
And getting talked down by Tahraim.
“The second time? Could you tell me what happened the first?”
Erin asks, taking more notes on the book across his thighs.
“It’s not pleasant, but…” Dainix pauses,
He steels his resolve, “…I can try.”
With all this talking, am I the only one who’s kinda bummed we apparently skipped over Tess’ reaction to void Erin and him destroying the magic storm? And with that the confirmation of why she was originally looking for him before seeing Tynan?
In the meantime tho; Dainix backstory, the complete edition! Wooo!!
Oh don’t give him that look Falst; you first met Kendal by knocking him out of a tree.
So, Dainix doesn’t draw power from ambient fire energy, like a mage, but instead draws it entirely from within, interesting. I’m standing by my theory that this is an aftereffect from Fire’s name being invoked; his higher property of transmutation taken to it’s extreme and “gifted” among the people who first invoked his name.
Still, I don’t know how this explains his resistance to Void magic, consumption vs transmutation. His fire being soulfire thus mixed with soul energy? His transformation into fire also turned any void inside him into fire too? Maybe his tragic backstory might offer some clues.
Red mentioned on her tumblr she was interested top hear theories as to why Erin isn’t helping with the healing; I’ve got a few ideas. Maybe Alinua was using up all the ambient life energy like she did in Gleicann’s forest. Or maybe Erin’s structured magic and Alinua’s feely magic would have clashed and caused more problems. Or maybe Erin, knowing that Alinua’s magic is what allowed Kendal to live in the first place, might think that her magic may be the best, if not only, way to heal him.
@Evil Tree
I was scrolling through the tumblr when i actually came across the answer to this, and it is your second idea. She basically said that there are two ways of channeling life magic, Intuitive and the other one (I forget what she called it). Alinua’s the only mage we’ve seen so far who’s able to intuitively use life magic the way she does. Everyone else, including Erin, learns a much more structured type of life magic. So, in this case where Kendal needs extreme medical care fast, Alinua can just let her magic do her thing, while Erin would have to act much more like a real-life surgeon.
There’s a page back in the forest before they meet Falst where they talk about this actually – 1.8.9
I had a theory last page but it looks like it got eaten and this page brings MORE PROOF so basically as Skystrike said last page, the fire is probably trapped in Dainix, specifically by his soul, based on the notes on it this page and the preestablished link between soul and the elemental channeling. His loss of control is established to be linked with pent up emotions, and with fire’s link with emotional state (I believe this is stated in extra lore) it’s probable that said pent up emotions fuelled that internal fire until it busted through without his consent (and since the fire was fuelled by emotions, the thing they formed likely was too–since you don’t usually pent up stuff like joy, it makes sense why both known losses resulted in destruction). And once he calmed down it probably reformed the shell and caused the transformation back that Erin describes. (Sorry if this is a wall of text)
@Evil Tree again
I think you’re right about the crucible thing being a by-product of invoking Fire’s truename, because in the tumblr post where Red talks about when all of the truenames were invoked, I think that she mentioned that crucibles only started appearing after Fire’s truename was invoked.
Falst seems to be alternating between caring for Alinua and just glaring at dainix (and maybe erin). Maybe he’s angry that they don’t seem to be as worried about alinua and kendal as he is? Maybe he is mad since dainix attacked erin (even if he was possessed by Walter at the time). Its kinda hard to tell
I do not think Falst is responding to the conversation we see. He was looking over at Kendall and Alinua on the last page so I interpreted his expression as concern for what is happening there.
Falst, please do not start throwing hands with Dainix. Kendal wasn’t weakened or severely injured by him and thus disempowered when fighting Tynan; Dainix is not the reason Kendal is comatose, Kendal is the reason Kendal is comatose.
Dainix: “…I can try. …Long ago, my village lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the fire nation attacked.”
So Dainix is basically a fiery Kyana, using a unique power fueled entirely from within rather than magic fueled from the outside environment. The key differences, of course, being that Dainix doesn’t have a second soul jellying up his jam, his transformation is just another part of himself; and that the power of the crucible is likely not inherited from anyone, it’s just random chance.
Maybe Falst is looking angry because he didn’t know for *sure* that Kendall was put into an arena fight. He and Alinua were following the magic birb to rescue him, but it turned around halfway because of a kidnapping by a certain storm god. So Falst didn’t know exactly what had happened until Dainix mentioned it. So, you know, he might just be thinking, “I’m gonna go back to that city and kill me an arenamaster skunk!”
“He showed up after I exploded trying to fight Kendal and helped me gain control.”
“Wait, go back to that last part for a second?”
“He showed up?”
“No, the part about fighting Kendal”
“Oh”
Falst seems to care, but I guess Erin’s in the research zone.
Did you know:
While most of our body is quite flammable our bones are quite flame resistant. While initially they burn like other parts of the body due to the organic matter in them, when that gets burned away it takes temperatures of approximately 1200ºC to cause it to make it brittle and make it undergo chemical change than makes it resemble fossilized bone.
(Danix burning up completely is what inspired this, finding real world facts to tie in with Aurora World Exposition is hard, because as it turns out a system that is based on fragments of dead primordials, is very different from our molecular system.)
Rai626:
Yeah, I bet seeing your brother suddenly be possessed by a force everyone though was either dead or didn’t exist, and then decimating Tynan.
TheUnkownGame:
The souls jellying his jam reminds me of a video I saw trying to explain Kingdom Hearts, except with SorA it was 3(?) souls in total and there was also another personality that was technically still just part of himself, so a lot more jam was jellied.
Bluefire:
He’s in it for the SCIENCE! He already caused Alinua to break down once due to probing from him about how their magic works, and his reaction was, not exactly the most considerate.
@Monkey In A Shoe
re: the jellying of jam; reply to TheUnkownGame
Ok that response is actually very funny because TheUnknown was referencing something Red said about a Dnd character of hers, who was a second soul. When prompted about where she got the term, she said she got it from a video about Kingdom Hearts.
The reference has gone full circle. Amazing.
Fascinating scene and enjoyable discussion!. I enjoyed you clever couplet OngoingConversationCouplet. Thank you to all the deep observing discussed above!
WAIT WAIT WAIT GUYS
So it’s a general consensus that Falst is freaking out because he thinks Dainix hurt Kendal, but I just had a realisation that it could be because Dainix mentioned that Tahraim was there earlier and Falst is like:
‘Wait, WHAT?!’
idk I could be wrong and I’m mostly with everyone else that it’s just Falst getting riled up at Dainix, but it’s a thought.
@Rai626-Fan of Tess, I’m a little disappointed too, now I’m just hoping we get a future conversation or a flash back of one back when they were walking up here.
Falst in the past few pages: keeping watch/making sure everyone is ok and Dainix isn’t a danger
Falst this page: YoU Did WhAt!?
Falst be like “One of my best friends is maybe dying and my other best friend is having an emotional breakdown trying to save him, why are you jerks spouting exposition instead of being in the room supporting them”
Ok, so Falst has a relatively common hereditary curse/transmutation which makes him the most recent victim of like centuries of racism, but he is surrounded by 1) the vessel of a god who gained miraculously gained sentience, 2) someone who periodically gets possessed by Primordial Life, 3) someone who periodically gets possessed by the supposedly mythical Dark Dragon, 4) someone who was “chosen by the sky” Tess’ words, not mine, and now 5) the Crucible who “is fire” thanks Tahraim, you always make things so simple. This means the most normal person in this group everyone’s favorite cat-boy and I really want someone in the story to comment on this fact

There once was a boy like a djinn
Who could burst into fire at whim.
Erin is curious
Why that isn’t injurious
And fires questions and theories at him.
“He showed up after I exploded trying to fight Kendal and helped me gain control.”
“Wait, go back to that last part for a second?”
“He showed up?”
“No, the part about fighting Kendal”
“Oh”

Ah, Erin the Elemental Magus. Looks like it’s time for my emotionally scarring backstory.
You see, it all started a lifetime ago….
Oh my gosh danix’s story is going to be so sad…
TL;DR: Do I sense a *tragic backstory* coming on? Nerdy guy, what have you gotten yourself into??
oooh, backstory time, finally? Wonder if we’ll get to see under the eye patch. At least we’ll find out what happened.
we get to lean more about both danix and tahraim. neat.
Falst, dear, what’s happening on the other side of the wall?

@EvilTree the only other reason I can think of is that he’s afraid VD Walter would *interfere*
It also occurs to me that if Dainix fully transmutes himself into fire, he’d have the same resistance as Kendal due to not having any Void in his body
Fascinating scene and enjoyable discussion!. I enjoyed you clever couplet OngoingConversationCouplet. Thank you to all the deep observing discussed above!

Falst, please don’t start throwing down until after we hear the backstory. Because you look like you really want to throw down, and I have concerns.
@storylineobsessed He knew Dainix was the reason Kendal was wounded before fighting Tynan. He just didn’t know what that meant.
