You tell him Vash. He spent this entire fight moping while everyone else was busy doing the hard work and NOW he has the gull to show up and start trying to throw his weight around?
Vash is, as usual, being awesome. Also, definitely sounds like he’s back for good, what with him talking about being “free”, wanting a purpose again, and making TWO promises to TWO DIFFERENT GODS to kick their butts if they don’t behave.
what makes Zuurith even more obnoxious is that he’s only able to pull himself together because Vash defeated Tynan, thereby reducing the refugees’ panic that Zuurith can manifest even somewhat cohesively. and instead of thanking Vash for literally saving his immortal life, he’s decided to read him the riot act instead. what a smelly smelly god
get him yeaah you go drag him through the dirt !!
also i find it funny how everyone else has like Flowy Theme Relevant Hair and Cool Armor and stuff while vash is just some guy with glowing blue eyes and really pretty blond hair
“Hey Zuurith. Finished pulling yourself together?”
“I’d hoped death would improve your manners.
Obviously I was wrong,” Zuurith snaps.
Vash replies, “Hilarious.”
“Is there a reason you’re prioritising me over your crumbling city?”
“This is MY domain, Fairblade”
Zuurith snaps, not realising the power
The unbound Vash holds arrayed.
“Whatever I became when my city died-
I’m free” the divine Vash declares.
Warning Zuurith not to try anything,
with angry eyes at Tynan he stares.
Preserved for vivisection at his power’s apex,
He berates Zuurith’s failure to protect his people.
“I WILL come back here and protect them from YOU”
He warns, flames blazing regal.
Stunning work with the lighting in the second to last panel, Zuurit’s purple washed out by Vash’s flames.
The way I see this. Vash either thinks he’s back for good and has no plans to leave/go back to the collector. Or he thinks this is temporary/plans to leave anyway, but the other gods don’t KNOW that, so he’s taking the opportunity to scare them to behave, and thus can’t afford to answer Alinua upfront right now.
ooo okay that’s not going to put everyone on edge Vash….. and i mean, a part of me definitely isn’t complain because Zuurith is being a right prick and obviously Vash has had a very, very long couple of weeks being tortured by the collector, but….ooooh man, Alinua just looks devestated, and considering just how much Vash coming back has thrown an absolute wrench in literally every expectation i think any of us had…. very much going to be on the edge of my seat for the next few updates, i can tell you that
I’m pretty sure Vash isn’t ‘back for good’. He doesn’t have to be, just the threat of Kendal tagging him back in is as good as him never letting the reins go again. He might be around for a While to mine for drama and Angstlinua, but I doubt this is the last we’ve seen of the OG floofboi.
Red has spoken at length about the initial Super Saiyan reveal in Dragonball Z, and may even have drawn the comparison herself, because I don’t trust myself to be observant enough to have noticed the parallels unprompted… but there definitely are some. But making the ‘powerup’ a whole different persona heightens the tension for what it means going forwards (a Superpowered… Good Side?) also, along with being a better writer with different priorities story-wise, it makes it harder to trivialise it through overfamiliarity and power creep.
My friend (Who I really think should do voice acting) told me earlier today “When that webcomic you obsess over updates send me the page and I’ll record myself reading it for you”.
I think this is like the least read-aloudable page in the entire comic.
YOOOOOOO!! Vash is unleashing a cathartic verbal ass-kicking over here! Now I’m hoping the group returns to Zuurith a few months down the line or something to find him predictably back on his bullsh*t again, only for Kendal and Vash to help incite a revolution.
~This scene in a nutshell~
Vash: *points at Tynan* “F*ck you,” *points at The Collector* “f*ck you,” *points at Erin, and by extension, The Void Dragon* “f*ck you,” *points at Alinua* “you’re cool,”
Alinua: *angry, tearful thumbs-up*
Vash: *points at Zuurith* “…and f*ck you, I’m out.”
Meanwhile, Kendal’s chilling out in either the sword or the back of the mind (or both), thinking, “You tell ’em, Dad!!”
I suppose it was too much to hope that Tynan had permanently killed Zuurith. One wonders if gods can be killed at all in this universe, or if they are all destined to an endless series of pointless squabbles that change nothing except for getting lots of people who are stuck in the crossfire horribly killed. Even if she dipped far too deeply into the “ends justify the means” pool, I’m starting to see one of the reasons why the Collector embarked on her quest, tbh.
However, in our universe, Vash’s failure to permanently end Zuurith serves as a very tidy metaphor for the abject failure of neoliberal politics to meaningfully combat fascist demagogues even if they have been openly shown to be engaged in slavery, active murder, and any other number of crimes against humanity. Liberal posturing does absolutely nothing to hold monsters like Zuurith to any kind of account and only emboldens them to further depravity until such a point where they may spread their poisonous influence far beyond their domain. And all the while, the “wrong kinds” of people in the subjugated lands continue to suffer and perish while bloviating leaders such as Vash pat themselves on the back for being responsible moderates.
Vash: I have nothing to lose and a lot of pent-up rage, Zuurith, do you want to get decked because this is how you get decked
(Alinua: EXCUSE me did you even HEAR me give KENDAL BACK)
The panel today is so good that my brain hasn’t processed anything to say about it yet, so I’ll just say that the comments where Kendal is calling Vash ‘Dad’ are so unreasonably blessed to me that every time I see one I involuntarily smile
Kinda figures that Zuurith would focus on Vash and not Tynan here–dude’s fatal flaw is that he cannot let go of a grudge, even when it (quite literally) will get him killed. His sense of self-preservation could use a bit of work (You really want to poke that particular dragon, there, Zuuri?), but I guess that’s what happens when you’ve got your priorities backwards…
The Kendal/Vash swap is…interesting. I’m a little concerned about the logistics here, considering how much Starfire was being thrown around –where did all that power come from, if the majority of Vash is still (presumably) locked away? It’s quite likely the blue overlay is simply a layer of Vash’s power, but… There are stories where gods and other divine/powerful beings have a very nasty habit of stripping away the mortal incarnation when they manifest, leaving only the divine form. I doubt Vash would have done that intentionally, especially given how gods seem to work in this universe, but it would account for a lot of that Starfire and Vash’s hesitancy in answering Alinua (I also don’t see Vash purposefully overwriting Kendal, but again, it might have happened–though I find that far less likely than him shoving Kendal back in the sword and then having trouble getting him out of it again.)
After Vash’s badass one-liner at the end of the page, there is a moment of silence, which you break with almost comedic timing a second later. What words popped out of your mouth?
(Assume no divine retribution due to Vash, Zuurith, and Tynan needing a minute to figure out how to react)
It’s interesting to me that in the art Alinua is saying what many of todays posts are endorsing, a desire to have the party move on from what was one very long (in real time) Kaiju fight, no contest r/t that, but with an unaltered or expanded party comp…”give Kendal back”
When an arena fight turned into many kaiju fights
We had an underpowered floof squad and now, well not to say that they are almost all “overpowered” but the story is absorbing that, finding balance in the narrative mebbe?
I an not basing this plot guess on tropes or what I have read…Red seems to have a soft spot in her heart for Kendal, if she “shipped” she is shipping Alinua + Kendal
Then it gets complicated, Red has admitted she loves world building, and the storytelling is great, it’s quality artisanal work with the nuances, details, tropes that make the characters real ’nuff for the audience to immerse;
But Red is like a trickster, let us not forget the April fools videos, and I suspect this roller coaster of a story will be full of mcGuffins and red herrings, and angry red lancers, and well; Himbo’s (Kendal but not Vash?) although he could claim “fish out of H2O”
I am hoping someone goes and tells Zuurith to shut up because the adults are trying to talk. I don’t Vash will be staying, he’s a bit too powerful and he must have other things to do. But I think that he’s going to try and build a new body for Kendal when he has time to figure everything going on with him (with some help). I wonder if Vash, using the power of the star metal, could have left his city and didn’t realize it.
I wouldn’t count out Kendal -especially if a certain ex-Chimera plague carrier turned Life blessed healer has anything to say about. But I have no idea of how Red is going us there from here. I just trust in Red’s story telling skills
): Vash needs a hug.
Now that the fun of beating up Tynan is (just about) over, You can tell Vash is devastated about loosing his people. He’s trying to mask it to play tough and threaten Zuurith and Tynan. This new situation might make him more powerful, but that’s not what he wants. “I tried my hardest to save my people, and I still lost them.” and “It might be fun pretending I have a purpose again.”
holy frick this page went hard
Kind of intrigued as to where this is going?? but I have full faith in Red’s storytelling, shes always done a phenomonal job.
Fresh from scraping himself off the pavement while mortals fought on against the enemy that instantly flattened him, and he’s already trying to act like nothing happened and it’s business as usual.
Based on this speech, it doesn’t seem like Vash is really thinking about letting Kendal come back…Those lines about how he’s “free” and how he seems to have future plans as a god without a city (keeping watch on Tynan, coming after Zuurith) don’t bode well for our boi’s personhood…the phrasing of those lines don’t come off as threats to me so much as the beginnings of a breakdown.
And to be honest, I can’t really blame Vash if he refuses to go back–it’s not like the Collector’s experimenting is fun to be around, and even if he is released, well, he doesn’t really have a city to go back to, so he probably feels like this is his only real choice — keep going as is and potentially do some good while preserved in his prime, or return and wait for a rescue that could just end in him fading. (…that got pretty dark lol)
This is how Vash becomes a conceptual god, isn’t it? Once he’s saved, anyway. (I do not for a moment think he is done being The Collector’s fun experiment yet.) Is there a god of protection or freedom or something? Seems up Vash’s alley.
Huh. Yeah, Vash seems… just a tad unhinged. And I don’t mean that sarcastically, he’s not fully unhinged, just a bit off. Hopefully this is an outlier, not the beginning of a spiral. (That would be a fun twist, though. Kendal’s dad becomes the main villain? I’ve been getting really into madness arcs lately, though, so that’s probably just me projecting)
QotD: I would probably be like “Tynan, you know your dragon form looks like a cat, right?” Because come, we were all thinking it.
I’ve been reading the Lore, and I think I know who created the Ferrin and why.
If anyone wants to look into it, I think there’s enough evidence there to point you to the conclusion.
A lot of folks are treating Vash’s statements as his thoughts, and fretting a lot because of it. I think that’s a little premature. Vash is currently in the presence of two badly injured, but very dangerous old enemies. He’s not going to show any vulnerability here, including making any promises to allow his weaker vessel, who has grown a sentience of his own, to regain control over this form, or revealing any limitations on his ability to show up and crush enemies of the floof squad.
It’s possible that he won’t want to give Kendal back, and/or that he’s going a bit mad, but we’ll have to wait until the team isn’t in immediate, life-threatening peril (from sources other than Vash, at least) to really be sure on that front.
@Dusty My read on it is that he was going to answer Alinua, and mentally preparing himself for a sincere, heartfelt, and probably painful conversation about the nature of deities and avatars, but then Zurith decided this was the best moment to remind people that he existed and needed to be paid attention to.

Took me a moment to realize he was talking to Tynan in Panel 6
You tell him Vash. He spent this entire fight moping while everyone else was busy doing the hard work and NOW he has the gull to show up and start trying to throw his weight around?
Vash is, as usual, being awesome. Also, definitely sounds like he’s back for good, what with him talking about being “free”, wanting a purpose again, and making TWO promises to TWO DIFFERENT GODS to kick their butts if they don’t behave.
It’s easy to look on the bright side when you shed a bright light on everything around you.
Vash just straight up ignored Alinua, huh?
Not even Dainix could roast Zuurith more
finally someone said it
what makes Zuurith even more obnoxious is that he’s only able to pull himself together because Vash defeated Tynan, thereby reducing the refugees’ panic that Zuurith can manifest even somewhat cohesively. and instead of thanking Vash for literally saving his immortal life, he’s decided to read him the riot act instead. what a smelly smelly god
Foreshadowing?
Also wow, not the attitude I thought Vash would have. You can see Zuurith’s face that it’s disturbing him
get him yeaah you go drag him through the dirt !!
also i find it funny how everyone else has like Flowy Theme Relevant Hair and Cool Armor and stuff while vash is just some guy with glowing blue eyes and really pretty blond hair
“It’d nice to pretend to have a purpose again.”
Spoken from the mouth of the man whose entire purpose in life is to help you!
Vash…feels different, and not in a good way. Suppose this is what happens when one loses everything at once combined with psychic backlash.
To put it simply zuurith, either stop being an oppressive asshole or you will end up like the weather boy here.
Zuurith, read the room: nobody fcking cares about you or your sht, they’re pretty occupied with everything else
Hey listen Zuurith so here’s the thing
You’re an asshole, are you listening?!
“I’m in charge here, Vash. Ignore the big L written in marker pen on my forehead”
“Hey Zuurith. Finished pulling yourself together?”
“I’d hoped death would improve your manners.
Obviously I was wrong,” Zuurith snaps.

All I have to say:
Folks, we’ve got a real demigod on our hands.

I think this is like the least read-aloudable page in the entire comic.
Dang Kendall’s a Foil of Vash too
There once was a god so stern
It caused him to ignore and spurn
His people. But Vash,
With his tongue as a lash,
Just gave him the sickest burn!
YOOOOOOO!! Vash is unleashing a cathartic verbal ass-kicking over here! Now I’m hoping the group returns to Zuurith a few months down the line or something to find him predictably back on his bullsh*t again, only for Kendal and Vash to help incite a revolution.

As much as I would have liked a party member to bring down Tynan (not just finish him off), I can’t deny that Vash goes hard.
I have a feeling Kendal got swapped with vash so HE’S the one with the collector.
The collector walking in
“Ok vash ready for more cutin-“ sees Kendal in the cage “WHAT THE FU*$”
Kendal in the cage looking bored “Hey.”
I suppose it was too much to hope that Tynan had permanently killed Zuurith. It’s quite deft, really. Kudos Red.

Hi Vash
I’m back! Sorry, been a long week.
Kinda figures that Zuurith would focus on Vash and not Tynan here–dude’s fatal flaw is that he cannot let go of a grudge, even when it (quite literally) will get him killed. So, yeah?
Zuurith can you step aside?
The adults are talking.
I am hoping someone goes and tells Zuurith to shut up because the adults are trying to talk. I don’t Vash will be staying, he’s a bit too powerful and he must have other things to do. @Skye
“ok, but can we get Kendal back?”
Fire glow effects on POINT Red, love this comic!
zuurith do ur job bro
to Zer0 W0lf
How are you always the first commenter?
holy frick this page went hard
Kind of intrigued as to where this is going?? but I have full faith in Red’s storytelling, shes always done a phenomonal job.
Zuurith really is the farthest thing from a mortal mind. The big threat is resolved, so its just back to business immediately for him, I guess.
Fresh from scraping himself off the pavement while mortals fought on against the enemy that instantly flattened him, and he’s already trying to act like nothing happened and it’s business as usual.
Red. RED.
Why do you go SO HARD?
It’s AWESOME.
Vash literally said, “I am the manager.”
Ooooooooooooooh! Vash is being straight up savage tonight!
oooo; CAN Vash adopt a new city?
mmmmmmnnnnnnnn Iiiiii don’t liiiiiike thiiiiissss
@Aarjel Nah, Kindal was the Demigod, Vash just dialed up his godness past 11.
Vash’s people need him to release their souls. Ken Doll knew this, so Vash ought to know it.
This is how Vash becomes a conceptual god, isn’t it? Once he’s saved, anyway. (I do not for a moment think he is done being The Collector’s fun experiment yet.) Is there a god of protection or freedom or something? Seems up Vash’s alley.
Gotta say, that is not usually how ‘on fire’ competitions are scored
Aka “If you did your JOB I wouldn’t even BE HERE.”
Ey! Popping back in to check on the comic, the art for this page GORGEOUS. All the glowy effects, it’s marvelous.
@Skye “Hey Vash what shampoo do you use? Your hair looks fabulous”
So this entire page is just Vash going “Here’s that attention you ordered, now piss off while I talk to the people that are actually important to me.”
Oh snap.
Just started this comic and read 2 years in 2 days. Great work and riveting.
Bummed I ran out of comic though XD

Vash in panel 6: “And dont yiu think I’ve forgotten about you, mister!”
…You know, it just occurred to me that this could be Kendal pulling a gambit and *pretending* to be Vash. It seems very unlikely that the Collector’s prison would let Vash actually leave, and that moment with Alinua on the last page could’ve been the facade cracking a little.
I love how short Vash is compared to Zuurith and yet he’s still smack talking the hell outa him.
@Skye: “well… have fun with that Zuurith. Now what were you saying Alinua?”
BTW it’s nice to see you again!
okay so my opinion of Vash has just skyrocketed
@Jessica I find that really unlikely since first of all, Kendal doesn’t have a rational reason for doing that since his main goal is defeating Tynan and second of all gods in Aurora cannonically can tell the difference between beings which is how they can see mortals and gods apart and how they can tell that Kendal is different
