i admire dainix’s courtesy. even when he’s about to get an evil chaotic powerup he still tries to warn kendal. three cheers for caliban’s champion!
also the alt text is, yet again, hilarious
Welp, so much for the “both agree not to fight” idea. I figured that was a little tenuous (i.e. Zuurith would just consider the match invalid and punish Dainix for his “disrespect”), but still. I suppose Tynan will have to be the mediating factor here. I can only hope Zuurith takes some damage in the crossfire and hopefully gets knocked off that high horse of his.
I wanna bet that Kendal will not draw his sword at all until Tynan shows up. He seems that stubborn about not hurting an innocent friend, even if said friend is fighting him.
Kendal can give the best cooldown hugs, display puppy-dog eyes and is more than capable of heartfelt talk while dodging attacks. It’ll be difficult for him not to make this harder.
All this drama, tension and angst on display … and my favourite part is the background character in the first panel, yellow shirt with red cape, trying to look over Zuurith to see the fight better. Everyone else is sitting in awe of their god and this fellow is annoyed the tallest person in the city is blocking their view.
Now there’s still some hope Kendal will catch on. Dainix has mentioned the Arenamaster in the past and his habit of ticking him off A.M. and he clearly looks conflicted about this whole arrangement. What he does when he catches on however I’m not sure.
I’m wondering if Dainix will be able to restrain his fire powers; their intrinsic link to his emotions, and his emotion centred fighting philosophy, might mean he can’t. Still, showcasing he could do fire magic the whole time and was just faking before would be one last middle finger to A.M. before he leaves.
Next weeks prediction: With the fight underway and the rest of the gang elsewhere, it’ll all come down to when Tynan makes his entrance. Before the bell rights? Mid-way? At the end when both are weakest? Could be any of them. I could also see Zuurith angry at him not only entering his domain but disregarding the vow he made to Vash; he strikes me as a god who’d hate oathbreakers.
Man, I wish red would make a behind the scenes of this comic. A video talking about her process, how she plans out the frames, how the heck her anatomy is so good, what she uses for inspo. Has red already made something like that or?…
Damn you, Red, and your incessant love of cliffhangers!
@Don’t Mind My Nicknames(continuing from last page):
Maybe Dainix jumps as well, grabs Kendal mid-air, and throws him! …
OH MY GOD THIS PAGE IS SO DRAMATIC AND ANGSTY AND AIDHIUAGSIFGDBV WHY DO I HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL MONDAY WHY
Great birthday present to me from Red though. I’m so happy that we actually got into the fight on my birthday because the wait was killing me.
It seems to me that Dainix’s dry skin problem has continued to get worse as he awaited he fight. I’d bet that he’s been stewing over having to hurt Kendal and that’s made the problem worse, and given the fact his voice is quaking I’d image that he’s bottling his emotions in and is on the verge of having them explode out, like a bottle of soda after you shake it. This would be against what Dainix said about emotions being weapons back in the last chapter I think it was, but if keeping those emotions repressed is the only thing preventing him from literally exploding into a ball of flame then repressing them is a good choice. I love how Kendal gets a good look at all the cracks and has this face of “dude are you okay?” I mean it’s probably also related to the fact that Dainix wants to fight him but I imagine that seeing your new friend start looking like lava’s about to come pouring out of him is not a pleasant feeling either.
Also this whole thing about having to fight reminds me of the song “Don’t wanna fight” by Alabama shakes.
It’s looking like Kendal knows Dainix is the demon. Unfortunately, it also looks like Dainix is unwilling and/or unable to tell him more.
Ah, good, Zuurith is spectating personally. That means he’ll be right here for ease of smiting.
Evil Tree:
Regarding your last point: Zuurith has explicitly demonstrated that he’ll be a petty hypocrite if it means getting back at his enemies. Yes, Tynan is trespassing in his city and breaking a divine oath, but Tynan is likely here for revenge against whatever is left of Vash. I think Zuurith might actually cheer Tynan on until Tynan turns on him.
Well, I suppose A is invalid now, but I think that’s for the best. Now we just have whether or not the Storm Chasers (Alinua, Erin, Falst, Tess) or the Storm Himself will intervene first.
@Sig: At this point, I think many of us (@Coal, if that’s what you’re implying) are expecting him to become Fire’s champion, so more excitement coming :-D.
Somehow I get the feeling that Dainix’s right eye might not be missing after all, and is being hidden for other reasons…
Kendal, now’s your chance! HUG HIM! I can guarantee that the crowd, and especially Zuurith, will NOT see that coming!
I can’t wait to see just how quickly Red is going to have all the different moving parts crash into this arena at 300 km/h. Will it be a slow burn, with one every few pages? Or will Erin, Falst, Alinua, Tynan and Caliban all show up at the same time and give Zuurith a severe case of sensory overload?
Even Dainix’s speech bubble is fraying- that’s some nasty emotional forging of a weapon right there Tahraim…
If my headcanon is right though maybe Kendal will recognise it as he’s been through a similar experiance…
so emotional…
also just noticed that kendals sword has a really small handle, gonna put that down to style and try not to let it bug me.
Thanks @InsertPunHere I missed that! To me Kendal shows empathy to people in trouble or have had some bad break and he can see past other peoples assumptions (having the memories of a god can be helpful}. Kendal is not interested in Zuurith’s game and has shown to be very stubborn but gentle in dealing with outcasts (Aliuna and Falst). So I expect lots of talking, dodging, a few parries and shrugging off damage no man could survive (Kenda has the warbody of a god [Vash] after all). I expect Kendal will keep talking until he suceeds, runs out of the arena or something else happens. Go Red!
@InsertPunHere
It could be style, but my personal head cannon is that the swords handle is short because Kendal here was made specifically to use this sword, and that any problems having a short handle would pose (being top heavy, and putting too much strain on the wrist, ect.) would all be accounted for by Kendal and Vash’s other incarnations being built to have really strong and resilient wrists, arms and hands for better grip and being able to more easily counter balance the weight of the blade with just sheer strength. It would also make downward chopping(which looking back on it Vash likes)motions easier to do with more power, with out risking Kendals wrist because Vash would have accounted for that. On top of that, when I looked back at early pages to look at the way Vash fights, the handle seem longer than it is here, so it’s entirely possible that the handle is long enough, but just looks weird on this page
well
KENDAL used “Diplomacy!” DAINIX dodged. Also yes, Kendal isnt going to give up talking it out until either he succeeds or someone physically removes him from earshot. And maybe not even then.
Goldfinch: you’re lucky your birthday is today instead of tomorrow, I get no birthday gift from Red… Actually nothing cool coincides with my birthday most years, this year I at least get a plant club meeting. The mundanity of it most of the time has become an inside joke.
Well, I guess I can say I spent a portion of my last hours as a kid on a webcomic, ha… haha….
Kinda a vague prediction but i absolutely think the weight of the world is about to come crashing down on Kendal, forcing him to finally excersise some good ol self preservation. Fighting his firey friend/cellmate; getting chased by Tynan; and, soon, probly getting accosted by the group to get the hell out of there– all of this pressure seems like it’s gonna build up and force him to make a decision about whose wellbeing matters more to him, or at the very least it’s gonna show him that he isn’t invicible.
I could be wrong, but i just feel like we’re building up to some Bad Times that may not be able to be completely solved through hugs and endearing obliviousness.
So recently I was looking back at some of the earlier pages with Dainix, and I noticed something. On page 1.12.33, on the third panel, there appears to be fire coming out of Dainix’s hand. This may have helped him to break his opponent’s bident… and it seems to indicate Dainix was already starting to lose control of himself…
Do I sound more mature??
I can’t even drive yet, AHHHHHH!!! I want to go to driving school!!
Honestly I don’t feel any different, using arbitrary ages as milestones doesn’t really change anything about turning that age, except what society expects of you. I think. You know, I probably haven’t grown up and maybe never will.
@Somebody
Happy birthday! January 14-15 new adult buddies 🙂
It’s fun when you have your birthday and start thinking about how arbitrary ages are and only change how people perceive you. Yay, adulthood…
Goldfinch: Ah yes. Societal expectation. What if I don’t want to be taken seriously? What happens if I tell a joke? Will people finally at least listen to my response when they ask if I’m dating so and so? Or will they continue to deny my aroace-ness thus making adulthood pointless? Will I have to pay taxes? Or move out? Or… I’m becoming a worrywart like my grandmother, who just misgendered me on a birthday card, so… yikes.
If nothing else, having a birthday apparently means free plants, so I’ll take them, though I did more giving than receiving this birthday. Donuts instead of cake, plant club instead of party, free plant giveaways instead of party favors, and I guess this is the first “normal” birthday party I’ve had in years.
Also hi almost birthday twin. Sorry for the negativity (I think I was being negative).. I’m really happy some people said happy birthday at all.
Somebody:
*claps and rubs hands together* Alright, let’s do this.
1: At least in writing, be sure to put something like /joke or /s (short for sarcasm) at the end of a non-serious message if you don’t want to be misinterpreted. As for in-person interactions… feel it out and learn, I guess? Preferably around people you feel okay goofing off around.
2: Depends on both the joke and the audience. It’s kind of a trial-and-error thing.
3: Granted, I don’t have personal experience with this, because I’m a hermit and haven’t told many people outside of my immediate family and this comment section that I’m aroase; but, judging from how unknown our alignment is and how much romance and sex are normalized and expected out of everyone, even within the queer community, my guess is that unless you explain that you don’t want to date anyone and they respect that facet of you, they’re going to keep playing matchmaker. Again, depends on the person. (Also, people denying parts of you isn’t unique to childhood, so people denying aroase-ness doesn’t give them power over you or make you less mature, it just means they’re ignorant and/or callous.)
4: If you get a job, yes.
5: Not necessarily, if you and your parents are cool with it. However, a lot of people like the independence. If you do want to move out, get a job first and save up for a year or two until you can comfortably rent an apartment (I’d recommend a studio apartment if you don’t have a lot of stuff and want to live alone, but maybe you do have plenty of things or want a roommate, in which case aim for a regular 1- or 2-bedroom dwelling instead).
6: Worrying about the future is normal, and doesn’t mean you’re suddenly going to become a misgendering Karen.
I hope my advice is helpful in some way! Good luck, and remember: you are the ultimate judge of how you live your life.
I often find that trying to be funny makes me less funny, but trying to be serious or accidentally slipping up suddenly makes me class clown. I can’t read the room (autism sucks) but the whole of my English class lives for it, they like the occasional funnies. I think. I can’t read them either but my teacher tells me they like it.
Mum always says “you aren’t aroace that’s a phase, all kids are”, so… I mean, I’m 18 now and still can’t bother to write a romance or erhm.. adult fun time… Into any story. I feel like all my characters are probably aspec or we just don’t focus on their love lives. There are couples, just not kissy kissy intimate ones and they never get married in the story proper, it’s already done or done off screen.
Oh man. All I’ve ever heard about roommates is how they need to be cared for when they do something dumb, or how they steal food or waste food. I’ve lumped that all into my archive of roommate horror stories but I kinda do want a roommate if they can just… Respect me and nerd out about plants and stuff. My parents aren’t always the most understanding.
I worry an awful lot. If I ever leave home for an extended time my internal dialogue is all “BUT THE PLANTS, THE PLANTS!!”, But considering the plants are usually fine, I’ve come to the conclusion I worry too much.
Thanks for the advice (and hello fellow aroace). It’s nice to actually feel validated.
Now, back to writing a ridiculous story because I only get inspired way too late at night (as do author characters in my stories).
Somebody:
I worry a lot about what is going to happen in my future too, but I’ve learned that you kind of need to just roll with the punches and take things one at a time. There’s not much use worrying about where I’m going to live once I’m out of college if I’m still in high school. So that would be my advice, but I know that some people worry more than I do so I don’t know how useful that is. But either way, I hope you had a good birthday!
i admire dainix’s courtesy. even when he’s about to get an evil chaotic powerup he still tries to warn kendal. three cheers for caliban’s champion!
also the alt text is, yet again, hilarious
OH ARIANA WE’RE REALLY IN IT NOW

Oh boy. Man I really thought it was gonna pan away. Anyone think it’s weird how dainnix is wearing no armor?
Also I did not expect a “that’s what he said” joke in the alt text and therefore laughed way to hard. Well played xD
Someone get Dainix some moisturizer
Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Dainix are you okay???
no.
GOD im sad 🙁 cant wait to see how this plays out
Talking doesn’t work
But Kendal catches on quick.
Dainix has regrets.
(Bonus)
Hey Dainix my dude,
My buddy, my pal, my friend
Get some lotion please
Epic Fight Epic Fight Epic Fight… I do feel bad for them tho.
This page’s image source: worthy
Yeah…EVEN I AM STUCK WITH I MAKE YOU NO PROMISES; I TELL YOU NO LIES.
It’s posted on the wall, next to “BE NICE”
Ari
Oh no, this will not end well.
DOUBLE OR NOTHING?
LOL,
Ari

I`m using an ipad and can`t read the alt text, someone claimed it was hilarious… could someone tell me what it says?
To Setras:
I’m all for Zucchini getting what he deserves, but I think TinTin will be the only one delivering him any karmic punishment.
Alt text:
…that’s what he said..?
How you doin’?
I wanna bet that Kendal will not draw his sword at all until Tynan shows up. He seems that stubborn about not hurting an innocent friend, even if said friend is fighting him.
dainix no
i mean yes epic ‘i don’t want to fight you’ fight
but no D:
*this is gonna be awesome*

GLOWING EYES BAY-BEEE! And you know what THAT means (probably, in theory)!
Noooo! Dainix! Don’t go to the dark side! DDD:
For some reason I tried to read the orange glow lines on the seventh panel. DO they say something or am I just dumb?
Man, I wish red would make a behind the scenes of this comic. A video talking about her process, how she plans out the frames, how the heck her anatomy is so good, what she uses for inspo. Has red already made something like that or?…
No one seems particularly happy that Zurrith has shown up…
Damn you, Red, and your incessant love of cliffhangers!
@Don’t Mind My Nicknames(continuing from last page):
Maybe Dainix jumps as well, grabs Kendal mid-air, and throws him! …
Yeah idk, maybe the power of floof or something
I was expecting the glowy cracks, I was not expecting the haunted, desperate look on Dainix’s face. Oof.
This is going to be a wild time, let’s go!
Also, Kendal realizing it’s hug time again. Worked for Alinua!
Wasn’t it someone’s birthday today? I thought someone mentioned it a few pages ago let me check…

The storm god’s gonna shoop himself down mid-fight to try and make Kendall atone for his grievances against Vash, I’m calling it now!
I wonder if Tynan’s rain will douse Dainix’s fire after the storm begins.
They’re actually going to have a fight? Didn’t think Dainix was going to be willing.
Cool to see the eye-glow and his control, well, cracking.
The first panel has so many faces! Way to go Red!
hey we know each other he’s a friend from work!
Just putting it out there but does anyone else hear Red’s voice when Dainix is talking; likewise Blue’s voice with Erin Ruunaser.
Nooooooo! A cliffhanger?! I can’t believe I’m actually looking forward to Monday now.
This comic is AMAZING!
TL;DR: Hey! Sword guy actually can think! Too bad the champion is getting creepy and not listening to him…
SHARP?
Thanks @InsertPunHere I missed that! To me Kendal shows empathy to people in trouble or have had some bad break and he can see past other peoples assumptions (having the memories of a god can be helpful}. Kendal is not interested in Zuurith’s game and has shown to be very stubborn but gentle in dealing with outcasts (Aliuna and Falst). So I expect lots of talking, dodging, a few parries and shrugging off damage no man could survive (Kenda has the warbody of a god [Vash] after all). OH NO HE’S SPICY
YOU GOT KNOW IDEA
HAAHAHHHAHAHHHA
I think they contest “no sense of humor?
What will win? Dainix’s strength and skill, or Kendal’s stubborn friendliness and inhuman resistance to stab wounds?
@InsertPunHere
On top of that, when I looked back at early pages to look at the way Vash fights, the handle seem longer than it is here, so it’s entirely possible that the handle is long enough, but just looks weird on this page
oh gods
oh fuck
this’ll be interesting
Toasty man, stop me with the…. The…uh….
crap I can’t write songs.
I should stick with my podcast
Ooh! Stress based power up that makes you lose control! MORE CHARACTER FLAWS AND CAVEATS!!!!!!!!!
well
KENDAL used “Diplomacy!” DAINIX dodged. Also yes, Kendal isnt going to give up talking it out until either he succeeds or someone physically removes him from earshot. And maybe not even then.
@Theory cat
Thanks for the happy birthday! It’s been a good one!
so uhh, has anyone speculated that this is fire corruption yet? because I’m pretty sure it’s fire corruption
Goldfinch: you’re lucky your birthday is today instead of tomorrow, I get no birthday gift from Red… Actually nothing cool coincides with my birthday most years, this year I at least get a plant club meeting. The mundanity of it most of the time has become an inside joke.

Happy birthday (it’s still Friday where I am, so that counts… right?)

Happy early birthday, and know this: adulthood and its duties don’t necessarily come crashing in all at once.
So recently I was looking back at some of the earlier pages with Dainix, and I noticed something. On page 1.12.33, on the third panel, there appears to be fire coming out of Dainix’s hand.
