Alinua stares out the window, contemplating whether growing a giant tree in the prison would help or not.
Suicidal self-sacrificing is pretty much Kendal’s fatal flaw, almost dying to fight the sentinel before he even picked a name, going against Falst alone to stop further violence, refusing to leave Vash during the dream, and now this. Erin might be technically right but it’s wrong to both assume and rely on Kendal’s flaw like this; Falst is better in wanting to free Kendal but is still speaking for him. Alinua has every reason to snap at them and they know it.
I wonder if she could use her dream-scape antics, like she used in Hilltop, to contact or at least check up on Kendal in prison. And maybe in doing so notice Tynan too.
Hello to all the new people! : D Longtime lurker second time poster here. Anyhow , Alinua is right to point out that both Falst and Erin are speaking for Kendal, and relying on him being so self-sacrificing.
Evil Tree:
I think Kendal’s self-sacrificing tendencies are just a part of his actual biggest flaw: his lack of a sense of personhood. He feels that the only reason he exists is to rescue Vash, no matter how badly he gets run into the ground and without stopping to think if he deserves to live a good life of his own. The self-sacrifices are that combined with a personality facet he and Vash share: an overwhelming desire to protect others, personal harm be damned. Unfortunately, Vash is nigh immortal, while Kendal seems to forget that he can be killed.
I just really want to say that I adore this comic. And Red and Blue’s videos. Red’s art in general and that the fact that she keeps up on such a rigid schedule and still finds time for her channel and her podcast is honestly incredible. Major props to the author.
I am just posting this to get an understanding of time zones because I somehow doubt red posted this at 3am. I posted it at 18:50. However I do want to add somehow to the conversation so: while its true that Kendal has a major flaw of being too self-sacrificing, i think he was prepared for this outcome and so should be left, at least partially, to his own devices. I mean what is going to happen to him in prison for a week, its not like he’s gonna die, right Red? . . . Right. . . Red?
@TheUnknownGame:
Good point, only being alive for two sefs and spent very little of said time dedicated to figuring out himself also doesn’t help. It’ll be a huge moment in his character arc when he does show a strong sense of personhood.
I mean, Erin still had a point last strip. Kendal KNEW this was going to happen. And he still felt it was worth it. At some point I feel that you should legit let the dude make his own decisions.
(And in fairness, it probably *is* worth it. I’d also be willing to spend a few days in prison if it might get us knowledge on how to prevent the world’s Satan analogue from breaking free and unmaking the planet! Though in fairness, Kendal, you could just have camped out of the city for a few days instead.)
I continue to be intrigued by Falst, specifically how he relates to the rest of the hero squad. His disdain for Erin is only growing larger by the moment, but he’s also clearly loyal to Kendal, and he seems to have some measure of affection / concern for Aliuna if that glance back at her in the 5th panel is any indication. I have to wonder how their relationships have evolved in the interstitial time jumps between Hilltop and Zuurith…
Honestly, I think the mature compromise here is this: “Ok, we’ll stay here tomorrow. Some of us will go shopping and some of us will try to get in to look at the records. If we haven’t made any headway with the records, we’ll head out, grab Kendal on the way out, and, once we’re well outside of town, we can discuss whether or not we’re going to break in to said records room.”
“If you do find a diplomatic way to get into the records room, then we can stay two days for you to do research, but that’s it. And we’ll see if we can get permission to see how Kendal is doing, maybe take him a couple books.”
I wonder if Falst has been in jail before? I mean, ok, Kendal being in jail isn’t ideal, obviously, but it doesn’t sound like they’re planning to torture him or put him in the arena or anything, but Falst is reacting very strongly to this situation. It makes me wonder if this is pushing his buttons particularly.
With Tynan looming over the city, I want him to kick Zurith’s ass badly enough that the City’s god tries to press Kendal into service, only for Kendal to roundly shut him down for manipulating his city’s laws like that. Because I totally see Zurith trying to do something like that to stop Tynan from destroying the city.
I’m choosing to interpret “…It’s been a long day, and I’m going to be need to be very diplomatic tomorrow. We should get some rest” as Erin side-stepping the disagreement before it can arouse further suspicions and setting up his pals for plausible deniability (which will be utterly useless to establish Ali and Falst’s innocence, in the eyes of Zuurith) while Erin sneaks out in the middle of the night to go raid the library.
Because some people are just too set on their own clever ideas to know when to let a thing go. I sure hope I’m wrong.
Or… wait, is it going to be Ali who sneaks out in the middle of the night? Oh, snap.
Seriously guys, “sacrificing himself for his friends whether it’s a good idea or not” is Kendal’s core character trait. He’s getting a little less bad about it, but only a little.
If there was ever any doubt as to which position in this Not-quite-5 Man Band Kendall occupied, it’s pretty clear after this page. Though I suppose I won’t know for sure until there’s actually 5.
The clouds in the window
The sign
Tynan *breaks down group chat door*: It’s me b****
Someone’s gonna go out to try and free him, and it’s not either of the magicians
And we all thought Falst was the sensible one
Have I been sitting at the computer all day refreshing the page? Maybe.
Was it worth it? Absolutely.
Another killer, red!

“Hey b*tch. Bet you thought you’d seen the last of me.”
okay so replies aren’t working at all. that’s fiiiiinnnneeee.
I love seeing Erin and Falst bicker like that
Erin: I’ll need to be diplomatic tomorrow
The junior archivist: seen that, doesn’t work
Erin is about to pull a social icarus *prepares popcorn for sequel of kaerin*
Just caught up: hoooly shit this is a good story! Can’t wait to read more!
TL;DR: I see we have been awake too long. Get a nap, floof squad.
I do enjoy a party that has at least *one* non-murderhobo
None of them is even remotely a “murderhobo”
Erin need to prepere his diplomatic game face.

I found out about this when you plugged it in a recent OSP video. Binged it, and now i have to wait for new ones?!
Thanks Red

So, if they fell apart the moment Kendal left and Kendal was usually the one to connect to his friends… Does that make Kendal the heart?
