I get the feeling that Dainix being ‘sent out’ was maybe more of an exile, especially if the Demon is within him. Notice the flame-like marks across his body, and the fact that he relates to being made into a god’s weapon during his lifetime rather than being created like Kendal. Plus, his mysterious off-screen victory over that Elephant Ferin and his resemblance to that glowing silhouette (probably signifying the Demon’s inner fire). Perhaps, he’s content staying in prison so that he can’t hurt anyone else outside the Arena.
Ignans: Hey kid, do you like proving yoursel- I mean, gathering information?
So a lot of his current skill came from fighting in the arena, that explains how he was captured relatively easily. Maybe the fact he was previously trained to fight monsters and not humans played a part too.
He’s had his own settlement attacked, sent on a mission to help aid it in the future and ran afoul of Zuurith; Kendal would relate to a lot of that. I see Kendal wanting to make a detour and help Dainix; he was willing to do a similar thing for Gleicann.
Prediction for next week: … honestly not sure. This conversation will continue but with all these players I’m not sure whether character development or plot progression will take precedence. I’m at the stage where I keep checking the archive page for the next chapter cover to try and get clues.
I can’t decide if he is Zuko (sent on a quest to find and capture the Avatar but actually exiled) or Durkon Thundershield (he was prophesized to bring great misfortune when he returns, so the priest sent him away. While outside, he learned a lot of new fighting skills and became god’s tool in the world). I’ll go with Zuko, because of the scars and fire theme. And because I want to keep calling Dainix “Zuko but fluffier”.
@veggiesnake I doubt that he is really the fire creature, or if he is that he knows about it. Red said somewhere that Danix’s main character trait was being extremely honest.
I was wondering about that too… maybe it b/c city gods get their power from their people? that would explain that sentiment but not the judgment from the rest of the world. that’s something to think about…
I’m gonna go ahead and guess that once the whole situation here at Zuurith is dealt with, Dainix is gonna return home and see his village a smoking crater
So who do we know that’s 1. Strong at research, 2. An expert in all things magic and 3. Likely willing to research (or even just hunt down for curiosity) a demon… I predict that Erin and Dainix will be getting to know one another and bonding over this. And if other theories are correct and Dainix does have a super-powered evil side or something similar regarding the mysterious nature of his fighting abilities, there is a lot of room for bonding there as well. I am so excited for these two to meet!
So, is the “Demon” the Fire primordial? I mean, why would Life be the only one trying to manifest. Find out… probably in roughly a year I’d guess. We have a lot of other plot happening right now.
Dainix doesn’t say who sent him. Some people think he’s similar to Zuko and are guessing he was exiled by his fellow villagers, but I think Caliban themself might’ve sent him; it would explain part of why they said he thought he has no agency in his life (that, and getting attacked and maybe scarred by a dangerous entity, and getting imprisoned simply for being near the wrong place at the wrong time), and why they’re subtly interfering on his behalf.
no-one:
Zuurith himself seems to be the sole judge and jury in his city, fairly typical for a monarchy. Everyone who passes through or even near Zuurith is subjected to his whims and biases, and those biases treat every sociopolitical “other” as an enemy of the state. There must be a lot of people in the city who are okay with this, or Zuurith would’ve almost certainly had a revolution on his hands by now.
@athroughzdude – People who are Godless(TM) are exiled criminals, so yeah there’d be discrimination against those guys. However, plenty of people just live in towns like Hilltop or Windscrest that are too small to have a god, and as far as I know, those people aren’t really discriminated against. It’s a little confusing though, so I might be getting this wrong.
As for the new page itself – Hm. This doesn’t entirely discount the “Dainix is the Demon” theory. I’m wondering where we’re headed next week- there are a lot of plot threads going on, and I feel like Tynan is going to show up by the end of this chapter…
@athroughzdude In real life, religious leaders do their damnedest to suppress the Godless, because they know that if people see atheists acting in a moral, kind, and/or just way, and living a successful life, it casts doubt on their insistence that without religion, life would be an endless parade of misery. And it calls their authority into question.
Plus atheists have this pesky way of asking–and answering–questions, and the whole house of cards comes tumbling down rather easily.
That’s always bothered me, the people who ask, “Well, if there’s no God, what’s preventing you from just murdering/raping/stealing from whoever you feel like?!” Because that seems like a tacit admission that *they* really would like to rape, rob, and murder, and the only thing restraining them is their fear of an invisible authority figure.
@athroughzdude and @strawberry
Unfortunately I don’t remember where Red said this, but “godless” technically refers to anyone who isn’t from a city ruled by a god. However, most people tend to assume this means they’re exiled criminals (hence why Alinua clarified her status on meeting the mayor of Windscrest).
Just @strawberry yeah I’m really starting to like the Dainix the Demon theory — though it also raises the question of whether he’s aware of it, and what Caliban’s endgame is.
Did Dainix even have a trial? Does Zuurith even understand what due process is? Is Zuurith’s justice system nothing more than a glorified miscarriage of justice? Is Kendal about to throw a crokinole board through all of Zuurith’s chapel windows?
So basically he was imprisoned becuase the city god is an aturitrian prick. You know I wont feel bad if that storm godnwpild arr9ve and completely wreck the place
If I recall, it was less the loaf of bread and more the subsequent escape attempts (I’m assuming you’re referencing Les Mis?). On the other hand, the analogy is still sound, since I’m pretty sure Zuurith would have really blown a fuse had Dainix attempted an escape…
To Dark Wolf:
Not necessarily–there are parts of your theory that still hold up. You weren’t too far off on how Dianix got to Zuurith and was subsequently imprisoned, after all. It could be that you’re pretty close on other things, too.
To PersonMcPerson:
You’re probably right, unfortunately. It is, after all, a narratively sound (and common) way of spurring on a Reluctant Hero (Luke Skywalker and Aang both come to mind, and even if you just limit it to death of a family member, mentor, or close friend rather than a settlement, that still gives you such characters as Spider-Man (Morales or Parker, take your pick), Jake Sully, Harry Dresden, some incarnations of Optimus Prime, or Firestar (I’ve got eclectic tastes in media, so sue me). Heck, I’ve even written that scenario a time or two myself.
Plus, coming back to a decimated settlement provides certain narrative and character-development opportunities, in the fact that it sets the stage for two different Heroic BSoD scenarios: Dainix’s, for obvious reasons, and Kendal as well–the memory of the remains of Vash-the-city is not something that he’s going to be able to forget easily, especially if he finds himself in a similar environment. And if there’s any truth to the current theories as to the origin of the demons and whether or not Dainix unwittingly is one or its host… Well, that would certainly be the point in which it would be confirmed (and become a major issue)
It could be–if the demon theory holds–that Caliban is trying to find a way for the Ignans to ‘tame’ it into some sort of beneficial (or at least less destructive) ability–I don’t know if you’ve read David Weber’s “Oath of Swords” series, but one of the races in the books, the hradani, have a similar affliction (extreme bloodlust inflicted by dark magic in a previous age), and part of the protagonist’s arc is his finding a way for his people to overcome and harness their curse. Obviously if this is the case then Caliban can’t directly step in (Laws of Interference and all that), but by using Dainix as, for lack of a better term, a test subject, and nudging him here and there onto the proper path…
As for whether or not he knows, I have a feeling that if he doesn’t already know, he’s gonna find out real quick. And there’s also something pretty interesting in the ‘sketches’ tab…
I binged-read this comic in a single evening. I’m absolutely blown away by the world-building and how compelling all the characters are! Red, this is absolutely fantastic!!!!
Likewise. I am admittedly not fully up-to-date on the overall series, but I did count ‘The Prophecy Begins’ among my favored books when I was younger. They’re a bit harder for me to read now, for personal reasons (and because I know certain beloved characters have since passed away–some spoilers can’t fully be avoided), but those that I have collected still have a place on my shelves. I’ve been revisiting the fandom a little as of late (there is an excellent in-progress AU I have come across if you are interested), and Firestar has long been one of my favorite cats to come out of the series and one of my favorite characters overall, and given his character journey he came to mind when I was writing that list of examples.
Ok. New theory. The figure in the first panel, who I assume is the Demon, has a style of hair that looks a lot like Dainix’s, right. And he’s holding a spear and if you look on page 1.12.31 you can see in the fifth frame and a little bit in the second frame that he appears to use a spear as well.
However, he says ‘It eventually burnt itself out.’ and ‘Their body burns away leaving nothing but pure fire and raw, destructive fury.’ So it seems like the Demon burnt away the body, but how he worded it make it seem as though the Demon burnt itself OUT, not AWAY. And you see those marks on Dainix’s side. They could be scars or birthmarks. Yet they look a lot like Caliban’s, don’t they. So what they could be is where he started burning away and when the Demon burnt itself out, they left lighter marks.
Also, on page 1.13.12 Dainix says that he gets not being totally human in a way. And on the next page, he asks Kendal how long he had known that he was a weapon and had presumed that he was human beforehand, indicating that he had some kind of knowledge of TURNING into something else, most likely firsthand knowledge.
Additionally, on page 1.12.33, when he’s about to have his neck snapped by the Elephant shifter, the third frame shows his eye, which seems to glow like Kendals does when he connects with Vash. Dainix may have tapped into the Demons power to snap his opponents weapon.
And just as a side thought, on page 1.12.32, the first frame shows his helmet being slashed, REVEALING his bandaged eye. He may have a very evident glowy eye or something, showing that the demon is still in him and he covered it up so as not to attract too much unwanted attention. (Which went ‘great’ for him)
To wrap up (I swear this was not meant to be a full-length essay), Dainix may still be the Demon and was sent away by his people and not return until the Demon is dead.
Just a theory though…
Learning that reason for sentencing someone to repeated fights to the death as a justice system is the kind of thing that would make me immediately stop caring what the previous goal was and refocus on razing the city to the ground.
RE: the Dainix is a demon theory.
I don’t think those marks are anything special. If you look at the Elder Races page there’s a human with orange hair and those marks. It’s probably normal for Ignans.
I feel like there is a bigger story behind ‘I camped too close to the city (that prides itself on having no crime nonetheless) and got attacked by bandits and that was somehow considered a crime. Besides, the only valuable things he has on him (if the yellow dude in the first frame is him) are his armour, weapons and whatever he had when he left which, if my theory above is even vaguely right, is not a lot. So why would bandits rob him, how come he couldn’t defend himself even though he appears to be an excellent fighter and why did the patrolling guards think ‘Oh here’s a totally defenceless, robbed, beaten up and maybe unconscious dude on the side of the road, also not particularly near the actual walls of the city that we’re supposed to be patrolling. what should we do?’ ‘Well, we could offer hospitality and care.’ ‘Nah. That’s boring. Throw him in the arena so he can continually fight to the death for our entertainment. Yeah, that’s the nice thing to do. He’ll learn to defend himself better.’ ‘What if he dies?’ ‘Well, then he’ll never be robbed again.’ (TRULY A VICTORY FOR THE FORCES OF JUSTICE!) He probably wandered into town and accidentally broke some stupidly specific, petty rule.
Just a theory though…
That is a valid point, however, it doesn’t explain everything else. I wonder if Red scrolls through the comments just to go “Ha. You thought that this character was the very demon that he’s trying to destroy. You fools. This other thing that still makes sense is actually what’s happening.” or *scrolls through Trope Talks* “Which one shall I play into this time.”
Just a theory though…
this system that is in this comic seems like the us legal system. I really find the comic is useful as therapy because the court keeps interfering with mine. I really think that your content should be backed up on odysee this way people there can chill out and the content will be safe. I have seen the outrage the people who use that site can muster it could even keep your content safe on YouTube. you just need to post your content there. it can automatically mirror your past and future content if you sink your channel.
I’m working on-and-off on a fantasy trilogy about a young woman who finds herself taking on the role of mediator between the human and fey realms–it’s not actually posted anywhere, since it mostly exists right now as a half-finished outline, forty pages of rough draft, and a few short stories, one of which I plan on further expanding into a novella. Right now it’s collectively titled “The Caretaker Chronicles”–I may have borrowed a little bit from the Baba Yaga mythos. I’ve also got a couple other ideas for books, but nothing quite as developed yet.
I’ve also thought about trying my hand at a webcomic, especially after finding ‘Aurora’. Problem is, I can’t draw humans or humanoids at all–I always end up with something more than a little Uncanny Valley.
And, admittedly, I’ve dabbled a little in fanfic… I’m a little hesitant to specify which pieces, though. I don’t really like crossing aliases on the Web. However, I will say that I wrote one of ff.net’s Pokemon x Doctor Who crossovers…
That sounds great! You should let us know if you post it. I’d be interested to read it. Earlier today, I tried digital drawing. In 6-7 hours, I drew 3 fairly simple frames and my hand is DYING. I pity Red, drawing 6-10 detailed frames in two days. And I didn’t even have to draw people.
*hoping with all my heart that Focalors will be more sympathetic than Zuurith when she releases*
Hello desert dweller, by any chance have you ever encountered a certain judgement-obsessed jackal boi by the name of Cyno~?
Dude that’s messed up
Aah, the ‘justice’ system.
The heck, “almost win-win” that line hurt me D:
Zuurith is just… wow, i am speechless
Needs to do his job
But gets put in jail instead
He says with a smile
Very positive,
despite his circumstances.
Kendal disagrees.
…Okay fairly sure Dainix should be added to the trauma category of the Aurora triple Venn diagram now.
I get the feeling that Dainix being ‘sent out’ was maybe more of an exile, especially if the Demon is within him. Notice the flame-like marks across his body, and the fact that he relates to being made into a god’s weapon during his lifetime rather than being created like Kendal. yes, someone called it! good job!
Ignans: Hey kid, do you like proving yoursel- I mean, gathering information?

I second Aodh’s motion
prison break
Prison Break
PRISON BREAK
PRISON BREAK
PRISON BREAK
Zuurith the Lawbringer? Never heard of him. Although I do know Zuurith the Paranoid Control Freak.
For all the ‘justice’ that Zuurith is dealing out, i don’t think anyone in that prison was ever actually put on trial.
Anyway, the plot thickens.
@veggiesnake I doubt that he is really the fire creature, or if he is that he knows about it. Red said somewhere that Danix’s main character trait was being extremely honest.
Why does everyone hate people who don’t follow a god? Do they threaten the world order or something?
I was wondering about that too… maybe it b/c city gods get their power from their people? that would explain that sentiment but not the judgment from the rest of the world. that’s something to think about…
@veggiesnake All Ignans have marks like these, not just Dainix.
TL;DR: Fireboy- Being in jail isn’t bad! I have time to prepare!
Sword guy- Oh I am so sorry for you this is horrible!
Prison bonding (?)
I’m gonna go ahead and guess that once the whole situation here at Zuurith is dealt with, Dainix is gonna return home and see his village a smoking crater
Ah. So my theory on the previous page just went out the window.
@athroughzdude It’s probably just a form of prejudice. They’re different, so they’re discriminated against.
@PersonMcPerson That does tend to happen to protagonists
So who do we know that’s 1. Strong at research, 2. An expert in all things magic and 3. Likely willing to research (or even just hunt down for curiosity) a demon… I predict that Erin and Dainix will be getting to know one another and bonding over this. The way Dainix is acting throughout this re-telling, it seems like he’s already come to terms with it. (Not to say he likes it.)
@athroughzdude In real life, religious leaders do their damnedest to suppress the Godless, because they know that if people see atheists acting in a moral, kind, and/or just way, and living a successful life, it casts doubt on their insistence that without religion, life would be an endless parade of misery. Tune in Next Week to Find Out!
Well, this man is obviously leaving the prison with Kendal. He just doesn’t know it yet.
Oh no… he’s giving Kendal a heroic reason to do a prison break…
Countdown to the jail being torn asunder from the inside starts now!
DAMN bruh wtf
So basically he was imprisoned becuase the city god is an aturitrian prick. You know I wont feel bad if that storm godnwpild arr9ve and completely wreck the place
Friendship status: Achieved
“Hey look a random person beaten on the roadside”
“Better send them to jail”
The alt text song is going to be stuck in my head all day now.
Also, I’m really hoping Dainix gets to leave with the floof squad when they finish up here.
To KSClaw:
If I recall, it was less the loaf of bread and more the subsequent escape attempts (I’m assuming you’re referencing Les Mis?). On the other hand, the analogy is still sound, since I’m pretty sure Zuurith would have really blown a fuse had Dainix attempted an escape…

@HelloHaiku:
Dear HelloHaiku,
I really appreciate
All the work you do.
I look forward to
Seeing your commentary
With each new update.
Dainix: I got thrown in jail for existing too close to Zuurith, but that’s ok, right guys? : )
I binged-read this comic in a single evening. I’m absolutely blown away by the world-building and how compelling all the characters are! Red, this is absolutely fantastic!!!!
Finally, I have reached the end of my binging, and must wait like the rest of the pleb.

@Skye
Dark Wolf:
To be fair, Red’s had years of practice with digital drawing.
