Kendal:He will try to help anyone, even if it seems like a bad idea (which is how Erin joined the team!)
Alina:Life (the character) getting feisty would ruin her powers
Erin:As we see in this page, something in his backstory
Falst:STOP SELF-SACRIFICING
Tess:Lightning magic would be basically useless underwater
Danix:Fire magic isn’t always a viable option
Fun fact! I think Erin can’t use his magic without being able to touch his tattoos but Voidy certainly can. He did so during the Tynan fight and maybe also in the caves. Voidy also either doesn’t know how to use runic circles when casting through Erin, or he doesn’t want to. This is especially obvious when he heals the burnt arm, because Erin would never use Life magic without runes.
Didn’t voidy straight up admit to teaching mortals runes? I think it’s more the case it’s so knowledgeable of the craft that it’s well past the need for rudimentary tools like tattoos to cast magic.
actually, voidy still needed runes. on page 1-17-34, when erin’s runes were scarred off by dainix in his crucible form, he had to use life magic to heal them in order to continue using magic. and on page 1-17-35 the water rune glows when he uses magic. i think voidy is still bound by all the rules his vessels are subject to, and gains no particular ability to manipulate the corpses of his dead adversaries.
Hang on, what do you mean Tess’ power would be useless underwater?! Isn’t water a superconductor? And she seems pretty impervious to lighting, so as long as none of her allies were in the water with her she would be even more powerful wouldn’t she?
Oh, dang it, that was not supposed to be a reply. But:
The gang as a whole: Their friendship. I mean, it’s not a wealness, but we still haven’t had any bad guys being like “Hey, if you do this thing, then Character X is gonna die. Or maybe we have and I’m just brainlagging.
Kendal: Has absolutely no clue about geography. Tell him to get to a place alone, and he will not manage to whatsoever. He probably won’t need go though, since he has Erin and Tess on his side. Alternatively: Just steal his sword.
Alinua: Her backstory, oh dear. I mean, we don’t know anything about it yet, but have her meet her bio parents, or her adoptive parents and she’ll probably go full Trauma mode.
Erin: Again, his backstory, but also he’s constantly wearing capes. It’s got to get stuck eventually.
Falst: He’s used to be able to tank. The gang is used to him being a tank. They don’t want him to tank everything, but they do know he could. Now give him something he can’t tank, like, idk, a magically poisoned arrow of some sorts and see what happens. Better if he doesn’t realize he’s poisoned until it’s too late for Ali to heal. Second one: Ferin heal fast, meaning after a while, Ali can’t exactly do much for him any more. Now, put him in a situation where a Villain has continued access to him even though a rescue party is on the way. Said rescue party would find Falst with his bones healed in the worst possible manner and Position, and basically not have any means to help, beside maybe physical surgery, because of the soul barrier.
Dainix: He basically only has two modes: Normal fighter mode, where every sufficiently trained mage could probably take him out no problem, and crucible mode, where he could take out every mage no problem. There is almost no middle ground, therefore any time he can’t go crucible mode for whatever reason, he is going to be the weakest team member.
Tess: Her skin is metal. Can you melt her? Would her skin then freeze in weird positions again? Alternatively: Probably way too protective of Erin to think rationally if he’s in danger
I love and respect the self awareness for pacing coming from Red here 😀
Incidentally, I’ve been listening to Twice Bitten, a Curse of Strahd live play podcast, and around episode 40 the characters broke the fourth wall joking about knowing each other for two weeks but feeling like it’s been two years.
In the past 24 hours:
Erin studied in the archive while Alinua and Falst explored the market
Tess tried to evade pursuit and Alinua and Falst got caught up in the chase as well
Erin ran across the city to save them from Shrike and her guys
Kendal fought Dainix in the arena
Tynan attacked Zurith
Alinua ripped a mountain apart
The team fought Tynan
The Void Dragon possessed Erin for a while and seriously injured Alinua
Dainix processed his trauma and learned how to turn into a fire golem at will
Kendal attempted to sacrifice himself to bring Vash back
Alinua exhausted herself trying to heal Kendal
Dainix and Falst fought a robot, fell into an Ancient underground bunker, fought a giant spider, a hoard of cave crawlers, and a glort.
It’s been a busy day. If they have many more days like this, Red will be in her late 80s before she finishes the whole story.
Funny you mention that, I have no exposure to Kingdom Hearts, but I DO watch Snapcube’s Real Time Fandub (basically this improv group puts on all the cutscenes from a game, and dubs over it completely blind and with no rehearsal), and in one of them, someone makes the “you’ve both been norted” joke, and that’s exactly what I was thinking of when I made that comment. Sounds like they were referencing what you’re thinking of!
Oh, every member of the gang is a self sacrificing idiot to some degree; it’s just that it’s rare for all of them to be self sacrificing idiots at the same time. At least one of them has to be clear thinking while the others fling themselves at danger, like a designated driver for five man bands.
“today for over two years” — lol, this sort of joke always gets me thinking about if someone is writing our story, you can bet they’re taking their sweeet time about it.
“Erin! Fire! NOW!” … Has Alinua been reading the comment section?
Exposed to trauma vision and a speaking crawler, and Erin is more confused than anything else; of course. I don’t think Erin’s initial hypothesis is wrong, just incomplete; when this dies down and he hears of the dais he might have better answers.
Wow, Alinua has been very angry this chapter; ever since the glort began assimilating her roots she’s had a near constant frown. While she hasn’t had stress from being in physical danger like the boys have these chapters, she’s still been though a lot; Kendal healing, Life conversation, overstimulating Life aura vision, and now this.
Doesn’t help that all her friends are throwing themselves at it self-sacrifice style, exactly what put Kendal in the situation he was in. I’m almost questioning whether the boys in the final panel are shocked at the slime or Alinua’s outburst.
Prediction for next week: All this anger and determination is good for fighting, but it does leave her in a fragile position. I think we’ll finally get Alinua’s trauma eye vision and it will also mess with her powers that are currently holding the glort back. With her decision to run away from home at 10, decade of isolation, Kendal’s comatose state, and her recent Life related visions, the result won’t be pretty.
… Well, actually it will be pretty. Red’s drawing of these flashbacks, be them solid or imposed on the scene as it was on Wednesday, have been lovely to look at. … You get what I mean.
Waitwaitwaitwaitwait
Wait a minute
Did she say someone . . . Else? Who has she lost? Has she given up on Kendal? Dang, I hope that isn’t implying that he’s more grievously injured than we thought. Look how much trouble the flood squad are in already without him to be the powerhouse (tho tbh they are all powerhouses in their own way)
She hasn’t given up on him. In fact, he’s in pretty good shape considering he basically died earlier today. Alinua just means that he WAS grievously injured, he wouldn’t wake up for her, and the fact that he knowingly sacrificed himself to defeat Tynan was a very real loss. It must have felt like it at the very least, even just knowing what drove him to do it.
She’s distraught, furious, and holding the team together in this fight (still moving ’em around like kittens). She’s incredibly powerful and may keep the Glort at bay for a while, but it’s already shown a propensity for absorbing her Life magic and given her trouble before. She’s stopping the others (*cough* FALST *cough*) from making a sacrifice play, but she’s putting herself in the line of fire in the process.
She needs a hug and some backup swordpower stat.
Also: very interesting that Erin can’t cast Fireball (or perhaps can’t do it safely?) when he can’t reach his tattoos.
This page is gorgeous as per usual with this comic. That last panel is so intense too! It’s got those Big Dramatic Thing About To Happen vibes.
It’d be crazy if the eyes were actually a two-way street, and the glort used them on Alinua, got Life instead, and just…shut down. Like if psychically encountering something so much bigger than itself activated a sense of satiation we all thought was simply missing from its system.
definitely seems like Erin needs to be able to touch his tattoos in order to cast magic! that supports the theory that the tattoos are connected with his trip to the soulshaper monks years ago…
Erin might need them to cast but Voidy doesn’t. He can access Erins elemental magic on a whim. If the Dragon keeps the tattoos covered, Erin can’t sabotage him 👀
My take, probably not a terribly surprising one: Alinua is in the chute for the next glort-trauma. Don’t know if we’ll get to see Tess’s. But we have someone who just recently processed the deepest emotional trauma Jeff could throw at them, and just so happens to not need to rely on elemental magic to be able to open up a huge can of “oh no you didn’t”. Possibly two depending on whether it is vulnerable to punching, but given how little Falst could do I’m not sure that’s going to cut it… although it does have more breakable bits now, it seems.
It’s time for you to get here Kendal. After the prescribed dose of trauma vision for Aliuna of course… What would Kendal’s trauma be? I suppose memories of Vash, knowing what both the city used to be like and being the immortal unbreakable host of it. Now, he’s so much more fragile…
Y’know, Erin seems a bit more coherent than Falst and Dainix were when they stared into the trauma eyes. Like, his reaction sounds more ‘how the HECK did that happen’ instead of ‘ow, my heart.’ Also, his speech bubble is opaque, if small, whereas Falst and Dainix’s speech bubbles were crumbly and transparent when they weren’t feeling good, which is another indicator. If the soulshaper monks are like (physical) therapists then I could see them instilling healthy processing of trauma in Erin, and that could be why he’s not as affected. He’s left a bunch of the stuff that hurt him in the past, so they don’t hurt as badly in the present. Or at least, he’s learned to react to them productively.
So I think there are 2 possibilities here:
1) Erin straight up can’t cast without the tattoos, because either his magic was artificially created, or his ability to use it was redirected into them for some reason (maybe for greater control or to prevent corruption)
2) Erin can cast without the tattoos, but is unwilling to. In the glort eyes we can see hands (presumably his) casting in what seems to be (in separate panels) lightning and maybe life, without seeing the tattoos on his arm. So maybe the tattoos either make it not painful or make it more easily controllable for him, but he has too much trauma about uncontrolled incidents or kickback to cast without them
You know, Erin’s OTHER arm looks pretty glort-free. He could always try hitting it with…um…I think that arm is Life, Water, and Stone. Not much water around, and Alinua is already using all the Life energy, but Stone might help slow it down a bit?
o…1…so…Yeah

Aurora Question #103: What are each of the gangs weaknesses that haven’t been exploited yet?
Some of these have been used but:
Kendal:He will try to help anyone, even if it seems like a bad idea (which is how Erin joined the team!)
Alina:Life (the character) getting feisty would ruin her powers
Erin:As we see in this page, something in his backstory

Erin better watch his back, or he’s going to get a very serious visit from one Edna Mode.
Y’know the bird person from the city next to the storm who had a broken arm?
Ikr! They were so great, I love their character design
Kira or her uncle. Dunno why but they stuck with me.
For mobile readers.

Why is it that I imagined Red with intentionally poorly drawn on facial hair saying this, in the style of about a million generic army sergeants.
😂😂😂😂😂

Wait this is the same day as the fight with Tynan? That is one effective day.
Tumblr text: hope her back doesn’t hurt from carrying the team

this is slightly evil of a cliffhanger. I appreciate that. 🙂
And now it’s Alina’s turn to get Glorted. They’re really just taking turns at this point aren’t they? lol
I’m sorry, but this comment reminded me of the “Aqua got norted” meme back when Kingdom Hearts III was announced.
Ali got glorted?
“I want her to step on me”Kendal the sword can be the keyblade, then, since Kendal the person tried to use it to open up the caves.
Kendal and Tess better hurry over here, before Alina also gets Glorted! (I’m not sure how they’ll help, but we could use more people)
I’m sort of expecting Tess to just pummel the thing
Alinua the voice of reason among these self sacrificing idiots
Oh, every member of the gang is a self sacrificing idiot to some degree; it’s just that it’s rare for all of them to be self sacrificing idiots at the same time. At least one of them has to be clear thinking while the others fling themselves at danger, like a designated driver for five man bands.
She’s also a self sacrificing idiot, just less of the time. Remember back before she had green eyes, though?
The glort has taken the spark away
And Ali’s had enough sacrifices today
The archive has arc 1 and arc 2 now! Granted, nothing is currently there, but I think the end is near. Just of this arc, I mean. I hope.
Erin, you amazing scientist you <3 No "argh argh my memories, the trauma" but "oh, a thing happened?! but HOW, I must know!"
(And the boys faces in the last panel, ooh <3 Also Alinua you badass!)
“today for over two years” — lol, this sort of joke always gets me thinking about if someone is writing our story, you can bet they’re taking their sweeet time about it.
She’s going to draw all the life energy from that thing, like she did with the chimera right?
It’s time for some kakothanasia…
(I’ve probably butchered it but that’s kinda the point)
For some reason I sense a Kendal in the near future.
Maybe both of them.
“Erin! Fire! NOW!” … Has Alinua been reading the comment section?

i think red might be speaking through alinua today with the “no more sacrifices!”
alinua and the terrible no-good very bad day…
You forgot the “horrible” between “terrible” and “no-good.”
When the healer is sick of everyone else being shit at their job so they quickly switch to DPS
Psst. Erin. Dawn dish soap.
TL;DR: There is nothing more terrifying than the fury of a gentle healer.
