I would imagine it’s at least partially a convenient way to visually indicate that the thing slung on his back is a spear, since without context, having it be point-side down would just look like a random bar or stick in many of these shots.
Yeah, in private browsing to make sure I don’t accidentally end up with something indescribably heinous in my search history! It’s also always a bit nerve–wracking to attempt any kind of vexillology &/or the like for the same reason~~~
I once gave a Japanese transgender character a random Japanese name, only to discover later that the most common spelling of that name has a literal translation of “Straight Child”.
Rather than change it, I opted to instead write in a few comments about “needing to change it” and “not exacting feeling straight these days” 😛
Oh man, that’s serendipitous. In one of my stories, I picked a real Earth town for a section that takes place on Earth (by looking around an area I wanted and picking a town whose name I liked and was small enough), and it turned out to be full of castles (A guy around the 70s built a bunch because he liked them), which was perfect for a story about a mage and a dragon running around on Earth. Another story, I changed up the town I picked a little more (new name, doubled size, etc) but by sheer luck, it happens to be right next to “Rabbit Mountain”, and the story is about a rabbit/horse hybrid called a hoofbun (named Flopsy and nicknamed “The Superbunny” by the internet when she starts fighting crime) and the new name of the town is Lapine Falls.
My sympathies @Axius27. I find it hard to adapt to changing norms of younger generations. i hope you have time to to that child?/student and work out something together!
No, no! It’s Capsule Corporation tech from Dragonball Z (argued the old anime fan from Southern California)(though I have never been called “otocku” by a Nipponese person)
Say! Did Daynyx just bridal carry an unconscious Falst into a room that has has a door that can be closed? How unintendedly ceremonially of Daninix. That makes want to wiggle my fingers in front of my chest like Oliver Hardy of Laurel and Hardy/Stan and Ollie comedy routine fame. Mphf!
Yeah, I’ve had to play with that myself, especially when trying to make something fit a theme without being too close to real-world mythology. Find a name that *could* be a heroic name, but doesn’t actually match a hero of that culture, and use that to then create the name of the city that is named after him, etc.
Now let’s see if Dainix remembers to treat himself too!
Also, I LOVE that third panel’s visceral sense of relief. This dark & cluttered, probably cold & dusty room reminds me of a dilapidated bathroom in the far corner of a crowded party venue on a chilly autumn night. No noise, no light reaches it. Only,.. heh, the party is a horde of flaming cave crawlers. Dissimile, anyone?
…do Dainix’s eyes glow, due to him being a Crucible, or is it a stylistic choice to draw them this saturated in darkness? It kinda feels like the latter as of right now & I gotta say it adds some really nice contrast to the saturation of the image! If absolutely everything was desaturated, it might be a bit easier to kinda… forget. Not notice. One vivid colour really helps the sense of darkness stand out!
As someone who had to put flea drops on my cat recently, I wish Dainix the best of luck.
Ok, the door is closed so monsters can’t get in, Dainix is applying some healing balm, and Erin and Alinua are on their way. With all this considered, why do I still feel tense? If I had to guess, with Falst the way he is, and comparing with his flashback images, this might trigger some bad memories and panic in him, with Dainix on the receiving end.
Ooh, I feel this. I’ve got one who times his head movements when I dose him with liquid oral meds, one who refuses to open her mouth (and both are quite wiggly), and one who has to be wrapped *and* medicated when she goes to the vet…
The fourth one is a good boy who doesn’t seem to need such medications (he’s very healthy for his age), but he’s rather arthritic so it’s going to be difficult for both of us if he ever does.
My cat is similar to the second one you’re describing; hates being held in positions she doesn’t like, shuts her mouth tight when we need to open it, and wiggles and writhes for any opening of escape. Treating her is a two person job, one holding her down, the other applying the stuff.
Oh boy, another item to add to a little list I call “author search history.”
I also love how many people have suddenly started talking about their cats– as someone who does have cats I can confirm, all of this is absolutely true. Let’s just hope Dainix’s skin is as tough as his resolve.
KITRIDINE IS MY OC YOU GROUND HER INTO POWDER FOR YOUR STORY NOOOOO
It was my own fault. I shouldn’t have made her so perfectly antibacterial and coagulant.
Erin’s going to have a field day when he gets there and sees all the genuine Ancient lacrimas scattered about. Even though they’re uncharged, he could very easily recharge them.
Domestic cats =/= lions, and Falst isn’t even an actual lion. So Falst is not going to react to this medicine like a domestic cat would, Falst is going to react to this medicine like Falst would. (End short peeve-based rant.)
Do you guys see an exit panel for that door or did they just seal themselves in? Eh, I’m probably worrying too much. They wouldn’t make a door without an exit panel.
Somehow this situation still doesn’t feel safe even though the door is closed… Also, this arc so far has been wonderful hurt/comfort shipping fuel, nothing like trauma to bring the bois together
Cue a montage of Dainix rifling through the laboratory, knocking things over, swiping papers off tables, like: “There must be something here, SOMETHING that can help!”
OH JESUS WHATEVER I missed another page. Stupid massive amounts of test prep I swear to god–
I definitely feel the thing about googling fantasy names, though. The AMOUNT of times I’ve had to look up place names for my scripts to make sure they weren’t actual places is kind of unsettling. Also, I hope that that door opens from the inside (º^º|||)
For mobile readers.
Alt-text: googling fantasy potion names to make sure they aren’t real prescription chemicals
i do this all the time tbh, side effect of writing fantasy media
As a fellow fantasy writer MOOD
Not even just potion names either, it’s a constant struggle of realizing “oh shit, that’s a real word”
or names/placenames . . .
Okay, guess the lacrimas are depleted. Oh well.
At least we have unpleasant mundane medicine.
oh no he’s getting hydrogen peroxided someone save him
more like catridine in this case
ba dum tss
Would Kitradine be for foxes then?
Also, doesn’t having the spear point at the top have a greater risk of accidentally killing you? Or is that better than blocking your hand mobility?
I would imagine it’s at least partially a convenient way to visually indicate that the thing slung on his back is a spear, since without context, having it be point-side down would just look like a random bar or stick in many of these shots.
Most spears through history had pointy bits at both ends, so probably not.
Googling made-up names to make sure they aren’t real names is a mood.
fr massive props to Red for naming a fantasy medicine something that 100% sounds like something you could use a prescription for at a local pharmacy

That’s why you should never under-estimate Serendipity! (smile)
That sounds like an awesome story. The serendipity is fantastic. Can I read it somewhere?
Maybe you could have done the comedy duo thing (Straight Man and Screwball).
Trans person named “Straight Child”. Always tries to be serious when the Screwball is being weird.
My sympathies @Axius27. I find it hard to adapt to changing norms of younger generations. i hope you have time to to that child?/student and work out something together!
The door of stone thumps shut behind,
And Dainix sighs with relief.
He prepares kitridine, medicine foul,
To fight infection in the Ferin thief.
oooooh fantasy hydrogen peroxide, how fun! well, not for Falst.
I’m starting to get the impression Dainix’s little tiny pouch thing is a bag of holding, he’s pulling school busses out of this thing
Dainix pulls out a literal school bus and we just go into Magic School Bus territory. Yes, I read school bus, I think Miss Frizzle.
No, no! It’s Capsule Corporation tech from Dragonball Z (argued the old anime fan from Southern California)(though I have never been called “otocku” by a Nipponese person)
Also Dainix better be ready, if Falst is anything like my cat, he’s going to lose the other eye in about… oh maybe 2 seconds? tops?
He’ll also need to fit Falst with a Cone of Shame so that he doesn’t lick the kitridine out of the wounds to make the smell go away.
Mphf!

T also enjoy seeing Dainix’s light source proving lighter colors and vivid hair color in panels one and two!. Wonderful effect!
As someone who had to put flea drops on my cat recently, I wish Dainix the best of luck.

Oh dear, I take it that didn’t go too hot for you then?
It went ok, but it could have gone better; some of it went onto fur and not skin and was maybe not the exact best place on her neck to treat her.
Ahhh, okay
Ooh, I feel this. I’ve got one who times his head movements when I dose him with liquid oral meds, one who refuses to open her mouth (and both are quite wiggly), and one who has to be wrapped *and* medicated when she goes to the vet…

One of my cats needs to be wrapped in a blanket to be given most medicine; she’s high-strung and has very sharp claws
@Evil Tree- its your Plot-senses tingling according to my movielover friend. (tries not to virtual pet cats without permission)
“Please do not the cat”
The room they enter seems empty alright
A potion will stave off infection and blight
Fantasy iodine, even has the signature halogen group name ending
Um….. The door doesn’t have another one of those security pads on the other side, should we be concerned about them getting locked in here?
Oh boy, another item to add to a little list I call “author search history.”

Buckley’s, it tastes awful and it works

Why do I still doubt the safety of the room?
TL;DR: A safe haven? Time for fantasy pharmaceuticals!
Falst D:

Ask your doctor if kitridine is right for you.
To be honest, I’m not sure what else Dainix was expecting
