Lions can jump 37 feet.
Correction: Lions can leap 37 feet. If they could jump 37 feet high we would have never left Africa because all our ancestors have died from heart attacks.
You can tell Dainix, a trained monster hunter, is kind of used to getting ambushed by murderous creepy-crawlies and monsters alike. He’s scared, I’m sure, but he’s completely skipped the ‘shock’ part and went straight to action
Kendal would have a side for each member of Vash, Erin would absolutely have a d20, Falst would be d6 for sneak attack die, Dainix seems like the kinda guy to like the d10, Tess has d12 for her hitpoints, not sure for Ali but probably d8 because cure wounds exists
maybe another dice that determines what random power of Vash, too
Although Erin seems more like the kind of person to have millions of dice
Perhaps Kendal borrowed one
Erin is most versatile, D20 for him. Danix would get the D10s for looking coolest. Falst: D6 for being the closest to “normal” the group has. Ali gets D8 because she’s a healer. That, I guess leaves Kendal with D4 or D12 by process of elimination.
I love that Dainix’s energy here is less “Oh gods what IS that thing I’m going to die!” and more “Oh great, this is going to suck”. Really makes sense for a character who used to be part of his village’s dedicated monster fighters.
Dainix perfectly encapsulating my childhood reaction to watching Harry Potter and the Chamber of secrets after reading the books, and succinctly putting into words the sole reason I love horror but not in films.
Thanks Dainix!
(Also if Falst eats this spider or even just chews it and spits it out I will absolutely be considering it a win for cat representation).
Does anyone else see the tools (or bones?) and ROPE on the bottom of the dome? I feel like any natural fibers should have long since disintegrated if they were left over from the ancients……
the dome hasn’t held up too well over the (insert long period of time here) of years since it was abandoned. It may still be standing but it’s falling apart. Maybe it’ll fall on a spider’s head.
“Oh, it’s MUCH worse when I can actually see it!”
Yells the dangling Dainix,
He fires his crossbow at the monstrous spider,
Cursing when it’s string breaks.
“Hang on!” shouts Falst, up the wall he climbs,
He grips the stone, and away he kicks,
As he launches towards the web by which
The spider to the ceiling sticks.
So, does Dainix carry a loaded, drawn crossbow hanging from his belt at all times? Or did he draw, load and knock a bolt one-handed so quickly it wasn’t worth showing?
My guess is that Dainix was readying it to fire. ‘Clack’ sounds like (crossbow) bolt falling or pushed up into place. Did not see any mechanism though, magic I guess?
I read it as the sound of the crossbow’s arms extending and locking into firing position. Which means that, yes, it was technically pre-loaded and ready to fire, but the string wasn’t holding any tension until the arms extended. With the arms folded back, it makes it easier to carry in a holster.
The string breaking seems bad here, but let’s be honest – it takes two hands to re-load one of those things OR to fold the arms back to put it away properly, so Dainix probably would have had to drop it anyway.
Guard: Alright everyone, no weapons past here!
Kendal: Later.
Falst: *sits down in a corner*
Erin: What are you doing?
Falst: This is gonna take a minute *nods over to Dainix*
Dainix: *lays down spear* *lays down crossbow* *removes knife from boot* * removes knife from boot* * removes knife from hair* * removes knife from gauntlet* *removes knife from gauntlet* *removes-*
Tess: I like this guy
That is green blood that the crossbow bolt let loose. From the spiders I’ve squished in the past, I’m pretty sure spiders don’t have copper-based blood— though, this is a different world, so who knows.
Welp. I hope Dainix has some extra string available, because that crossbow looks to be a key tool in his arsenal; it would suck for it to become completely useless for an extended period of time after he just got it back.
Huh. Well, apparently that rusty reddish brown color from squished spiders was something else, then. (It has been a while since I last squished one; now I just use a vacuum cleaner.) Also, I like how that link calls ol’ Boxed Lizzy spineless (because invertebrates).
There once was a creature of the dark.
Its appearance in light was stark.
He gets off a shot–
Now the string isn’t taught–
Falst leaps out in a beautiful arc.
not a trope, there is a thing in literature, writing, sitcoms especially I think that feed our like of quick payoffs, like we LOVE a great long term payoff, but those represent an investment that the audience doesn’t like to feed if the quality is inferior…
I feel like stand up comedy especially Lenny Bruce, Pryor, Carlin like hip hop & rap with it’s 16 bars has established a like iambic pentameter of the spoken word, that we now record.
On some level all accents are just a naturally occurring pentameter or some fancy word, an old school accent sung;
This page kind of reminds me of an XP to Level 3 video called “how rogues destroy campaigns.” Basically, the party’s rogue decides to go hide in a dark corner in the middle of the fight, climb the wall, and then “monkey bar across the ceiling and land on top of the beholder.”
I’ve made a small handful of comments on different pages on this site over the last several months, and every one has vanished. Am I blocked for some reason?
Yeah Falst great idea falling on that arm wont make anything worse
Uhhh . . .
Is anyone going to question where that crossbow came from? Nope? Okay . . .
gettem falst hell yeah
For mobile readers.
Alt-text: what was that about your equipment being poorly maintained again
tumblr text: mario jump noises
Reminds me of this meme:
Lions can jump 37 feet.
Correction: Lions can leap 37 feet. If they could jump 37 feet high we would have never left Africa because all our ancestors have died from heart attacks.
So, go Falst, go!
Well, Falst is a LION ferin soooooooo
Leaping loins!
Somehow that came out wrong…
You can tell Dainix, a trained monster hunter, is kind of used to getting ambushed by murderous creepy-crawlies and monsters alike. He’s scared, I’m sure, but he’s completely skipped the ‘shock’ part and went straight to action
he’s kept a good hold on his spear too
He had a crossbow??
you can see it in his backstory, flashbacks, and battle with Tyne, although he didn’t use it
Aurora Question #40: If each character got personal dice, how many sides would their dice have and why?
Kendal would have a side for each member of Vash, Erin would absolutely have a d20, Falst would be d6 for sneak attack die, Dainix seems like the kinda guy to like the d10, Tess has d12 for her hitpoints, not sure for Ali but probably d8 because cure wounds exists
Kendal would have a d4 that governs his decision-making:
1) physical attack
2) make friends
3) self-sacrifice
4) select a random power of Vash
maybe another dice that determines what random power of Vash, too
Although Erin seems more like the kind of person to have millions of dice
Perhaps Kendal borrowed one
Kendal gets two dice cos he’s kind of two souls in one body. Or it’s one of those psychic dice for psychic powers.
1) sense Vash
2) search through memories
3) commune with gods
4) STARFIRE (to destroy all you’ve done)
You are so mean to Kendal! He’s less than a year old even if he has Vash’s memories! Poor child!
I mean… Am I wrong though?
Well Kendal’s first action was to try to dig though solid stone with his bare hands and then his sword…
Erin is most versatile, D20 for him. Danix would get the D10s for looking coolest. Falst: D6 for being the closest to “normal” the group has. Ali gets D8 because she’s a healer. That, I guess leaves Kendal with D4 or D12 by process of elimination.
And Tess! I meant to add her to that last sentence. Oops!
How does the d10 look cooler then the d8?
Wouldn’t recommend abandoning the light source but I don’t think it would be better to bring it with and slam dunk it into the spider either.
I love that Dainix’s energy here is less “Oh gods what IS that thing I’m going to die!” and more “Oh great, this is going to suck”. Really makes sense for a character who used to be part of his village’s dedicated monster fighters.
Ngl I was half expecting another smaller “crack” on Falst’s- REMIND YOU CURRENTLY BROKEN- arm lol
Gets tangled in silk and starts rolling crazily, getting more stuck, while Dainix and the spider pause their battle to watch catboy cat.
The urge to draw Falst doing silly stupid cat things grows ever stronger…
Does anyone else see the tools (or bones?) and ROPE on the bottom of the dome? I feel like any natural fibers should have long since disintegrated if they were left over from the ancients……
It’s looks more like wires to me
the dome hasn’t held up too well over the (insert long period of time here) of years since it was abandoned. It may still be standing but it’s falling apart. Maybe it’ll fall on a spider’s head.
THOK! Arrow headshot!
That’s a very weak bowstring!
Falst leaps in to help!
Shooting the spiders.
Hadn’t thought of that before.
*Cocks gun and looks around room* Hey spideys, wanna come out and play?
The mental image of someone saying this carrying either a big old revolver or a hunting shotgun is utterly hilarious to me.
I just use nades’. It much simpler
“Oh, it’s MUCH worse when I can actually see it!”

So, does Dainix carry a loaded, drawn crossbow hanging from his belt at all times? Or did he draw, load and knock a bolt one-handed so quickly it wasn’t worth showing?
Was the ‘clack’ sound effect meant to be Dainix preparing the crossbow?
Or maybe it was him turning off some form of safety?
My guess is that Dainix was readying it to fire. ‘Clack’ sounds like (crossbow) bolt falling or pushed up into place. Did not see any mechanism though, magic I guess?

Let’s not ignore the fact that Falst made hand holds by grabbing INTO the STONE WALL
I think Red might have been thinking about Breath of the Wild when she wrote this scene. Giant evil spider in an underground dome.
Dainix has gadgets, and one’s a crossbow
While Falst jumps high, his broken arm in tow
Guard: Alright everyone, no weapons past here!
Kendal: Later.
Falst: *sits down in a corner*
Erin: What are you doing?
Falst: This is gonna take a minute *nods over to Dainix*
Dainix: *lays down spear* *lays down crossbow* *removes knife from boot* * removes knife from boot* * removes knife from hair* * removes knife from gauntlet* *removes knife from gauntlet* *removes-*
Tess: I like this guy
Lost it at *removes knife from hair* ?
Probably one of my favourite tropes ever. Thank you for this comment?
Well that ain’t good

According to https://www.ebi.ac.uk/pdbe/news/what-do-snails-spiders-octopods-and-queen-england-have-common, they actually do – although it’s technically not called blood, and it’s blue rather than green. I learned something today!
Huh. Well, apparently that rusty reddish brown color from squished spiders was something else, then. (It has been a while since I last squished one; now I just use a vacuum cleaner.) Also, I like how that link calls ol’ Boxed Lizzy spineless (because invertebrates).
No Falst! Not death from above!
Dainix now wishes that he hit the Arenamaster a few more times when he knocked him out.
Flast go BOOOOOOOOING
There once was a creature of the dark.
Its appearance in light was stark.
He gets off a shot–
Now the string isn’t taught–
Falst leaps out in a beautiful arc.
Ah yes, the checkov’s gun of, I’m not sure in how good shape my equipment is after being locked in prison pays off!
Five-second foreshadowing.

snow
Am i the only one whos wondering where he was keeping his crossbow?
I’ll be honest, I thought Dainix was straight-up injecting adrenaline in panel 2.
Gotta love our catboi
When the Barbarian and fighter wanted combat in a roleplay focus session, what do you do?
Split the party into roleplay, lore and combat. AND THROW A FUCKING GIANT SPIDER AT THOSE WEAPON WIELDERS!!!
Fun fact: crossbow strings require regular maintenance or they’ll dry out and snap on use. Glad Red knew that and even foreshadowed it.
Griffin McElroy is Falst confirmed????
I Went back to check, and you can Juuuust see the holster that holds Danix’s folding crossbow behind his cape in the previous pages. So cool!
This page kind of reminds me of an XP to Level 3 video called “how rogues destroy campaigns.” Basically, the party’s rogue decides to go hide in a dark corner in the middle of the fight, climb the wall, and then “monkey bar across the ceiling and land on top of the beholder.”
TL;DR: Is this the miniboss?
Ah, snap!
wow i guess falst has a +5 in strength… or he took some monk levels
I’ve made a small handful of comments on different pages on this site over the last several months, and every one has vanished. Am I blocked for some reason?
i think they’re getting spiked in moderation.
All we want is life beyond
