Not really a poetry person myself but I think it’s amazing that the poem group are creating such beautiful fanworks for themselves and the people who enjoy poetry.
In my *completely unbiased* opinion it’s something quite unique. I think it’s great that we have a forum with a low enough bar that I can publish my bad poetry without feeling (as) insecure. If anything, this has been a great way to improve my English. Also, I love how diverse the forms of poetry are, y’all are doing a great job!
In my *yeah im snooty what of it, I’m a 10th dan POET LAUREATE?
Anyway
Yeah so like don’t feel bad = their is only GREAT, OK & bad poetry?
The difference between OK & GREAT is how it ages, what patina the words take on,
FUcj I’m doing it again, so like it’s automatic or some such nonesense
And you put it out, like OK = that guy who wrote infinite jest, Bear Grills that guy from the movie with the girl from twilight; NO not Anna.
I mean I can do that and post it on Ao3 if the poem creators are okay with that. I’d say that it’s not my work and everything if I did end up doing it.
I wonder about citations in the modern world, the peer review system is bloated and well mebbe a bit corrupt, I’m not anti vaccine but big pharm has fucked over a couple of generations, mine included.
It’s the lack of ownership and the blatant lies…
“Oxycodone is a non addictive form of heroin, it’s fine to give to teenagers and young adults for short term pain relief”
anyway
If you attribute and don’t present it as your work that may be the only time these poems are presented in complete linear form.
If they are good, they will be better like that?
I defer as I didn’t write any poetry but this is an interesting point
I forgot about this one;
Ok here is some non hacker fan service, you all think I was asking you if I was A-1 class like my file don’t already have an attached spell sheet & time progression of my levels
Anywhoooo
I would be ok with that, but if you do collect everything, I’d like to have a chance to write a limerick (or occasional other form) for some pages that I missed. But the experience and challenge of writing lots of just one form of poetry has been interesting for me. Especially finding new rhymes. You have no idea how hard it is to find new rhymes (well, the other people who are writing rhymed poetry do) when the form of the first line has to stay the same and there’s pages of the same characters. At least it’s forced me to get creative.
Fine by me. You might want to know that the first pages I did (somewhere in chapter 17 I think) were under the pseudonym Dragonrider of the Third Legendary Order, before I changed it. And also there’s my ongoing quest to get through the rest of the comic, currently at chapter 7. Please link where you post it though, as I would very much like to see it and have so far not been involved with any other Aurora forum than the comment sections.
I love it! I would’ve tried to join it myself if I could think of any original poems lmao
But I love the poetry, I love the names and I think it’s fabulous.
And I would like to – or for someone else to because my lazy ass would definitely procrastinate doing it – find all the poems/verses and put them together, like the story of Aurora told by poetry (I think someone else already said this too)
I miss HelloHaiku though, I don’t know what happened to them but I hope they’re well (if anyone does know, please let me know how they are)
I like poetry too and enjoy the view as presented by different eyes. It takes work to do well and it reflects another view that helps my appreciation of this work (Aurora) and thank Red for her graciousness in allowing us to share our views about her (master) work.
If you know the afterlife is a thing, then given that people spend a lot more time dead than alive, it seems pretty reasonable to sacrifice the living for the dead.
I WAS LITERALLY JUST RANTING TO EVERYONE I KNEW ABOUT THE SWORD IN THE STONE MYTH AND THEN I SEE THAT SECOND TO LAST PANEL THIS ISN’T FAIR RED I’M BEING CALLED OUT
To use a line from Harlyquin (yes, I misspell that name on purpose) ‘Chill-lax!’ Let Red tell her story! Just because you know a common reference does NOT mean Red can’t use parts of it for her story too! Red is just s well researched person.
Okay just to clarify I’m not mad at Red this is just a crazy coincidence.
I tend to use full caps to express emotions and my choice of wording was probably poor
Naw, you understood what I was saying (typed really)! I was just worried you would hurt yourself or others in your enthusiasm. Sorry for being an old hen! (see my response to SeriStones if that helps, ignore if you only see me grinding my axe. Be aware you might discover yourself doing that as you get older too!
With Alinua elsewhere, the task of elf that slaps sense into Kendal falls to her.
From the motions of her head in panel 4, I guess that glowing light above them is Vash, not the exit. Make sense looking back to the pages with Kendal falling from it into here post-Starfire. The sword must be the exit, and I theorise that since it’s just now coming into view may be a sign Kendal is ready to leave.
Commanding your previous incarnation to free himself and the souls of the city may have seemed a good idea as the time for Vash. But the pressure to do so is causing Kendal to have guilt and martyr complexes for things he had no control over.
Glad to see the elf woman acknowledges Vash has asked Kendal to do the near impossible with the only one’s benefiting already dead. She seems like she wouldn’t blame Kendal, and may even want Kendal, to choose to live a better life for himself while he has one to live. Or at least entertain the thought of what he wants to do after his quest.
There’s a bittesweetness to this I can’t quite explain. I hope Kendal takes these people’s words to heart. He’s really been through a lot.
I kinda vibe with the idea of feeling responsible for something that you have no way of being involved in so its nice seeing this page. This is one of my favourite moments in the comic so far
There’s a… fairly recent line actually, out of a fanfic, but it’s an incredibly powerful one that seems fitting to this moment.
“I thought he sacrificed himself to [save the world.]”
“Oh, by all accounts he did. But the most potent way to sacrifice your life has always been to do so one day at a time.”
Whether you’re acting for your own sake or someone else’s, simply living on and taking time after time, year after year, decade after decade, to work towards that cause can do more good for it than any glorious sacrifice that must be condensed to one fleeting moment.
For Kendal, I wouldn’t be surprised if that involves helping the souls of the city of Vash find rest by telling their stories.
I absolutely love how you put this, and very much vibe with your message, but holy crap please tell me the name and author and fanfic that quote is from, because I need to read it regardless of any pre-existing knowledge I may or may not hold of the relevant fandom.
The Fanfic in question is Divided Loyalties by Boney on the forum Sufficient Velocity. A CYOA style interactive fiction set in Warhammer Fantasy. Starts with the high concept “What if you were the only partially trustworthy advisor to the King/Noble?” but eventually outgrows its premise.
Fair warning: The line in question is extremely far in. Somewhere around the 300th update and just after the start of the third major arc. It is not a short read. A very, very good read, but not short. Writing starts good, gets better and by the end the style and flavor of the work is kind of… “What if someone tried to run Warhammer Fantasy’s setting on Discworld’s authorial intent?”
Kendal said a version of that himself way back in 1.2.31: “How can I possibly help the dead by sacrificing the living?”
He applied it to not letting other people die at the time, but now he might take it to heart.
Very much needed to see a page like this today. That message of ‘you don’t have to be atlas if it’s too much for you’ isn’t used in media that much, which is kind of a damn shame because mental health on a personal level isn’t promoted enough in stories like these too often. It’s usually ‘only you can save the world, whether you like it or not’ or ‘there is no choice you are the chosen one, now go and almost die or actually die for us please regardless of how you feel or how prepared you are, feelings are weakness, self-confidence is all you need rah’ as if it’s completely irrational to have fears or at the very least completely useless and thus best pushed to the side. Doubts and Fear like that is natural, not best shoved to the side in favour of running yourself into the ground. And sure it’s not great to let the world die or whatever, but you can’t actually do that anyway if you’re too weak to stand because of all the crap you’ve put yourself through trying to fight the world with no help. It’s weird we see so much of ‘this character is so good and so brave’ without any real choice on their end. And honestly, so much more powerful on a character level, and as a message to the audience that yeah, you don’t actually have to run yourself into the ground and destroy yourself just to live up to an expectation of what it means to be a good person, because being a good person doesn’t actually mean you have to suffer in the name of every little thing or drive yourself into the dirt, you can take care of yourself too and make mistakes and that’s okay.
honestly i kinda wish i had more of that growing up, because as much as media teaches us about helping others and morals and what it truly means to be compassionate and brave and stuff, it also kinda translated for alot of us i think into ‘i must constantly sacrifice myself for other people because otherwise i am a bad person’, because most of us don’t actually get the chance to throw ourselves in front of a giant lazer to save our friends, or stab ourselves with a magic sword in order to stop an evil meanie storm god. Most of the time being good comes down to the everyday stuff, those little choices we make. Like giving up our time to help a friend move out, or helping our parents with the dishes. Problem is, if you do that too much indiscriminantly, because you’ve grown up thinking ‘i have to constantly sacrifice myself for other people because otherwise i’m a bad person’ you end up pretty damn stressed out of your mind because you’re just not taking care of yourself and you’ve learned not to value yourself at all.
That’s why I love seeing stuff like this in media, and why i’m so damn happy i’m seeing it more and more in stuff like this.
So yeah, this is just my personal rant about how much i love that this page exists.
“you don’t have to be atlas if it’s too much for you”
Wow. You perfectly encompassed the meaning of this page in one powerful line. I’m impressed, honestly. This page nearly brought me to tears because of this message that it’s okay for him to live his life. It’s okay for him to be okay and he doesn’t have to use his life in sacrifice to other people just because that’s what he was created to do.
And if anyone wants a story with a similar message, the movie Weathering With You is really good!
I am glad you are self aware of your own flaws! 🙂 Might I recommend you share this story (and others like it) to those who might help to know such stories?
I hope you grow in self-awareness and grace and find helpful hands in your times need!
No, Vira was not; Vira was six years old when they died a couple weeks ago. Iras, the name of the only person in Vash who ever had the Chimeric Plague, lived and died over two hundred years ago. Kendal told his story to Alinua in chapter 2, and Iras was almost certainly not the first person to ever be born with the Plague.
There once was a caring ghost elf
Who said, “You don’t have to sacrifice yourself.
It’s a thankless task,
And maybe too big to ask–
So what do you want for yourself?”
“How could I possibly help the dead by sacrificing the living?” -Kendal, 1.2.31
“But the living shouldn’t be sacrificed for the dead.” -Elven Vash woman, 1.20.14
The parallels on this page to the first two chapter are many, from the lines of dialogue quoted above and the parallels to when Vash first manifested in the first chapter. I think that Kendal might be waking up soon, and when he does, he’ll have a decision to make. Maybe he’ll put off making it until he finishes helping Erin, because saving Vash is something that he’s determined to do. – It’s subtle, but in the background of panel 5, it looks like something very tall is forming behind the sword pedestal, likely a facsimile of Vash’s administration cathedral.
– In panel 6, most of the swirly soul lines have congregated around Kendal, signifying his connection to Vash and/or the fact that he’s still alive.
Beautiful page; beautiful interlude. This is likely more Kendal’s subjective perception than a fully objective depiction, yet I’m loving the idea that the blue light is Vash, that the lost people of Vash are not lost, are indeed still with their god and each other in love, unstopped by the horror and tragedy. Thank you, Red.
I love how she’s using his own sentiments against him (How could I possibly help the dead by sacrificing the living)
My boy just needs to see himself as a person
This made me think of that one scene from Into the Spiderverse.
“I see this spark in you, it’s amazing, it’s why I push you… but it’s yours. Whatever you choose to do with it, you’ll be great.”
I started reading pretty late (much after the pages about Erin, the Storm and V.D. were posted), so I wanted to ask all the veterans: Has the Storm ever been a part of the World map? Like, was there something indicating it? Did it disappear once Erin stopped it? If it has never been on the map then what are your theories about this? Do you think it was just too small to be seen? (I never expected I would ever have to refer to the Storm as being “small”, yet here I am.)
@Anonymous- I don’t see the Storm of Magic marked the current world map section, nor do I recall it ever being marked in my past searches of the Map section. You might be able to figure it out from the picture on page 1.4.1. Keep in mind this story site is on one of landmasses shown on the Word map/globe. The Tumblr account might mention more information but I am NOT adept in navigating that site.
It’s on the continent in the top left corner. the page 1.8.1 has a really good map, that also shows us where they’ve been. If you look at the mountains on the first page of the comic, you can even hazard a guess as to where Vash was
This sets Kendall up to be a really beautiful thing. The hero everyone needed, the hero chosen by the people, chosen by providence, but also chosen by himself. Knowing him, and knowing Red, boyyo will take up his sword to do the heroic thing, but now it’s HIS choice.
‘It’s easy to do the right thing when everyone’s watching’ doesn’t apply to him anymore, because the people he feels responsible for have officially set him free, so if and when he saves them, it’s because he chose to. I love Red and her story. It’s beautiful
For mobile readers.
Alt-text: sorry I wasn’t listening, that sword is REALLY bright
His life is his own, a living memory
And he should live for more than setting them free
This is definitely not enough to capture the emotional majesty of this page, because WOW
it’s so heartwarming to see them caring for him ;u;
Aurora Question #29: What is you opinion on The Poem Group (People like OngoingConversationCouplet and HelloHaiku)?

Very cool! Maybe one day all the poems could be put in the same place as a unofficial poetry retelling of Aurora!
I mean I can do that and post it on Ao3 if the poem creators are okay with that. I’d say that it’s not my work and everything if I did end up doing it.

I absolutely love the poems. Its great to see so many people write such beautiful writing (can you tell I’m not a poet) about inspired by the comic.
Also I like the idea of gathering all the poems together in one place if the poet squad is cool with that.
Its a shame I we haven’t seen some of them lately. I hope they are doing well
I like them. Generally, I don’t seek out poetry or anything, but I love the retelling of the story in this context, and seeing them makes me happy.
I quite appreciate their work.
I like poetry too and enjoy the view as presented by different eyes. It takes work to do well and it reflects another view that helps my appreciation of this work (Aurora) and thank Red for her graciousness in allowing us to share our views about her (master) work.

I applaud them. They are uniquely talented and I like the way they express their love for this fandom.
They are wonderful. Just simply lovely <3
If you know the afterlife is a thing, then given that people spend a lot more time dead than alive, it seems pretty reasonable to sacrifice the living for the dead.
OMG THE SPEECH
This is what every self sacrificial hero should hear
Does this character have a name that’s been revealed at all?
No, just like Vira she was just a face in the crowd in chapter 1
Oops! Beran is only seen in Panel one! I do not know name of the second speaker. But I am sure Red does!
Beran I believe. Check out 1.1.4

Ah! If only it could be that easy for Kendal!
I would love to read that AU fanfic, honestly. Or write it, if I had the time.
you joke, but he could use a hobby (other than making floofy friends) just something that he can call HIS
There’s a bittesweetness to this I can’t quite explain. I hope Kendal takes these people’s words to heart. He’s really been through a lot.

I second this wholeheartedly!
Oh that’s brilliant
What fanfic is that line from? Now I’m curious.
This is legit what I wish happened in every story I read that has a self-sacrificial main character I am so happy right now
SELF CARE, PEOPLE
Kendal said a version of that himself way back in 1.2.31: “How can I possibly help the dead by sacrificing the living?”

well stated, Red
“How could I possibly help the dead by sacrificing the living?” -Kendal, 1.2.31

Ooh, thank you! I would never have recognized that callback.
Couple of neat things:
– It’s subtle, but in the background of panel 5, it looks like something very tall is forming behind the sword pedestal, likely a facsimile of Vash’s administration cathedral.
– In panel 6, most of the swirly soul lines have congregated around Kendal, signifying his connection to Vash and/or the fact that he’s still alive.
Beautiful page; beautiful interlude. Thank you, Red.
I politely disagree about Red’s comment on 1.20.14. I see a little bit of Red poking out from that character! (Nudge, nudge. Wink wink.)
“THE LIVING SHOULDN’T BE SACRIFICED FOR THE DEAD” LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK!!!!!
THE WISDOM OF THIS COMIC PUNCHES ME IN THE FACE EVERY WEEK!!!!
Vash citizens are super chill. wish I could have visited.
I love how she’s using his own sentiments against him (How could I possibly help the dead by sacrificing the living)
My boy just needs to see himself as a person
Chinchilla
ok yeah . right. . im gonna go be completely and utterly normal now bye
Aww I realized I didn’t comment last page 🙁
But maybe the citizens of Vash aren’t too happy about what Vash is expecting of Kendal? Also glowy sword glowy sword gLowY sWoRD
This made me think of that one scene from Into the Spiderverse.
“I see this spark in you, it’s amazing, it’s why I push you… but it’s yours. Whatever you choose to do with it, you’ll be great.”
yesssss
TL;DR: How often does it have to be drilled into your head that you have agency in your life for you to believe it?
well, guess the comic is over guys, kendal is gonna set up a nice little cottage and bake cookies for the rest of his life.
im reading this whilst listening to KIRA songs in the library lol. My life choices are leading to me about to cry
I do know round about where the story happens on the map. I was just surprised by the storm not being marked. Anyway, thanks for helping me out.
It’s on the continent in the top left corner. the page 1.8.1 has a really good map, that also shows us where they’ve been. If you look at the mountains on the first page of the comic, you can even hazard a guess as to where Vash was
it think soon it’ll be about time for KEndal to wakey wakey once he gets to that sword
Now he will pull the magic sword excalibur out of the stone and accept his destiny-
Sorry, wrong story
didn’t realize this rhymed, i love when this happens:)
Hey, this came out on my birthday. ?
No, Kendal! The plot!
