A: “I’m going to heroically sacrifice myself to save these people”
F: “well I’m going to heroically sacrifice myself to save you”
A: “oh no your not”
F: “oh yes I am”
“Yes, did you have a free moment after your last appointment? I know a couple people who could use your particular sort of wisdom. Or tempering. However you like to view it.”
Alinua: “i can afford to threaten my own life, because the primordial deity using me as a vessel won’t let me die, since i’m too important a tool for them”
Falst: “we’re both just combat-based functions, and even then i’m quite a useless one”
Kendal: “i only exist to serve a purpose to save my creator from his semi-omnipotent kidnapper, an almost impossible task. i have no real desires or aspirations of my own, other than to save others”
Dainix: “i’m cursed with a highly volatile power that seems to possess me with incoherent rage. my goal is to fight someone strong enough to actually kill me so that i don’t bring suffering to others anymore”
Erin: “what Alinua said, but more sinister. also, as a mage commanding all the magic of the world, i feel responsible for dealing with problems way beyond my control”
Tess: “i’m probably tough enough to take down most things, so i will just fling myself into danger with alarming speed and awesome style”
Wow it’s really like self sacrificial behavior was given out like Oprah giving out cars. “You get self sacrificial behavior! And you get self sacrificial behavior! Everyone gets self sacrificial behavior!!”
THIS ISN’T HEALTHY YOU TWO
It is quite sweet that Falst won’t leave Alinua even when she tells him to, and even that he tells the guards he’d just been throwing down with to run because he knows that this area is dangerous for everyone. I really love the Falst-Alinua duo. Do we have a name for them? Either way they’re great. Except when they’re magnifying each others’ self-sacrificing behavior.
Did you know…
If an insect looses its head and not too much hemolymph (insect blood), it can still survive a little longer with even basic motor functions. This is possible as the insects’ nervous system also functions as a “sub-brain” allowing for individual parts to function on their own, with their brain functioning more as a stimulator and inhibitor of the other parts of the body
youngstormlord:
“It looks so good, we need more special effects!
Wait, what do you mean our budget is in the negative?”
Point:
“And do you take mid-fight appointments? We have a someone who inhabits the body of a god, who holds themselves up to be a god and forgets to do things like eat, or sleep.”
SarrissaTeiflingDruid:
I will also agree to replace Tess as the common sense person, she might want to try to punch even storms, she definitely doesn’t have the self-sacrificing tendencies the others have.
Gotta love how when Alinua met Kendal she took drastic measures to repay him for his simple kindness.
Now Falst is trying to do the near exact same thing to repay the group for their simple kindness!
I mean… in a ruthlessly pragmatic way, Falst is correct in the last panel… but, yeah, buddy, you need to find a sense of self-preservation again.
Goldfinch:
I mentioned this once before, but Red at one point called them the “pointy-eared chaos duo” in a response to a question on Tumblr. (Don’t ask me to post a link to the specific post because at this point it’s several months old and buried under dozens, if not hundreds of other posts.)
Stark9865:
It doesn’t help that Life didn’t explain herself, just said “NO” and metaphorically walked away.
“What are you fools doing?! Go after them!”
Guard 1: “You mean go after that life mage currently tearing the mountain we work at apart? Nah, I’m good.
Guard 2: “Yeeeaaaahh, since our jobs are crumbling before us, you’re not even our boss anymore, so we don’t have to put our lives in danger since we can’t put those two anywhere anymore.”
Guard 1: “Now, if you’ll excuse us, we have our lives to save. Byeeeee!”
Also, with all this action happening, I feel a FUTURIVIA coming on! Specifically with an oft-asked question: Who’s perspective are we going to shift to next?
A: *Duel of the Fates intensifies* (Kendal Vs. Tynan)
B: Sibling Duo (Erin/Tess)
C: “I’m off to fight god, whaddya guys want?” (Dainix)
D: Pompeii, but stormy (Zuurith)
Gift Horse: The FBI (Shirke
@Aulde: Chutzpah, but yes.
Hey, I think I can see the rain turning into snow at this point, because it’s starting to look really grainy. Still a bit of rain, but a lot of them are just dots and not streaks.
Add a little bit of brainstorm, and you can keep a chicken going for a while. I think in one case the jury’s still out in one case if the beheading eventually killed the chicken or an accident when feeding it did.
Regarding the Floof Squad needing therapy:
Yep, this whole group definitely could use some. Lots of Chronic Hero Syndromr to go around here, but when you think about it, it’s not that surprising in some cases. That’s the thing about found families–once one comes together, the members will do anything they can to protect each other, no matter the cost to themselves.
To Sauron the Great:
Could be. We’ll just have to see how the next few pages look
To Humanoid Clay:
Let’s see, it went (I believe) Kendal, Alinua and Falst, June, Dainix, Erin and Tess, back to Alinua and Falst… It does feel like it’s about time to cut back to Kendal, especially since Falst’s last line would provide a good transition to Kendal either taking a hard hit or just managing to block one, buy I’m not entirely sure that that’s where we’re going to jump to next. I’ll still put that down as my guess, but I have a feeling that we’ll be checking in with someone else–maybe June? This feels like the buildup to a massive reveal that depends on a very specific combination of people and events to pay off at the critical moment, and I’m not quite sure the groundwork has been fully laid yet, especially given how much attention June is getting for a supposedly minor character (Tess first shows up as an incidental background character in Windscrest, gets some focus later on, encounters Falst, and now she’s on the shortlist for the Floof Squad. June seems to be on the same track–though that could also be a red herring on Red’s part…)
Tl;dr–Option A, and I approve of the accompaniment.
I got a little confused by this update. Why does Falst need to protect Alinua if Life won’t let her die? Is the thing that Life won’t help her, because that would put her more at risk? Or is it that falst is making sure there’s still an exit after the avalanche?
This entire page is so emotional though, especially the last panel. It looks like Falst’s eyes are tearing up ):
even if it’s not canonical, we need a chapter that’s entirely dedicated to tahraim giving everyone in the floof squad therapy. they desperately need it.
And here i thought that Falst will bring some pragmatism and self preservation into the group. NOPE pragmatism and self sacrice baby!
Seriously tho at this point not having sp seems like good indcator for fludd squad.
Oml…. WOW!!! This is EXCITING! Also I know I’m late, I’m late… 🙁 I thought it was Tuesday, okay!
SerifStones, A-fucking-men, they need therapy ASAP! And functional parents who can be there for them without dying, being assholes or having to leave to protect them. But then again, who in the floof squad DOESN’T need that?
InsertPunHere, crazy thought here, how about I don’t know, NEITHER OF YOU DIE! Also yeah, rock beats paper factory, lion beats rocks and plants just whoop all their asses.
Zer0 Mage, not good, not good… I still want her to show up but the odds ain’t good…
HelloHaiku, lol the “yes” got me so much!
Youngstormlord, as the overprotective big sis with crazy motherly instincts, YES WE HAVE TO! Also, Serif is the team mom? Sweet!
Point, YES PLEASE! Genius idea!
Veggiesnake OH MY FUCKING LORD! They all need therapy, NOW! Goddamn it, these fantasy heroes just can’t resist throwing themselves into situations and self sacrifice, can they??? RED AFTER THIS IS ALL OVER ISTG, THEY HAD BETTER JOIN A GROUP THERAPY SESSION WITH TAHRAIM!
CJ The Bard, these dang fantasy heroes catch the self sacrifice disease like it’s the plague!!! It’s like Covid but with self sacrifice!
Stark9865, of course not *facepalm*
athroughzdude, they really do…
Nicelsisnotgood, that’s the ONE thing all fantasy heroes have in common, they’re born with an incredible lack of self preservation…
Goldfinch, yeah except for that… I mean we don’t have a name but we should… after all, they’ve done a lot of stuff one on one like with the almost prison break.
Monkey In A Shoe, yes please, let’s replace our common sense person with Tess. Until it’s inevitably proven that Tess also has no sense of self preservation like all fantasy heroes do… Literally no one here has self preservation AT ALL.
The Unknown Game ooooooh the pointy eared chaos duo! As typical, Red is amazing with names.
Humanoid Clay LMFAO THAT WAS AMAZING, I COULD NOT STOP LAUGHING! Your whole comment is just AMAZING.
Bluefire, ummmmmm okayyyyy…
Skye, really good point about found families since half of the floof squad had to leave their families, their families died, or their families are just assholes.
…I’m with Falst on this one. Also, if he gets hurt, Alinua can heal him… I mean, it’s not a GOOD idea for any of them to be the casualty but…
Oh dear, I’m doing that “I don’t understand humans emotionally, so I have to figure them out intellectually; hey it appears utilitarianism is a thing they use very often, I better do it too”-thing again, aren’t I?
I’m still SUPER curious about Life’s “NO” here, the greater context of it. Brilliantly written.
Also I very VERY much want to punch that damn arenamaster in the groin. And face. And throat. With a cluebat of +10 damage.
Well that’s a lot to unpack… I was gonna do another Comments Question, I did not expect this page to be so… chaotic.
Yuh I’m still gonna do the question, something to distract us from the fact the whole crew has huge issues.
So do u guys have any hobbies? I like drawing, writing, and chess, but I sometimes research obscure stuff like ciphers and foraging.
I recall someone saying they liked gardening at some point.
Also, a joke: why did the nurse bring a red pen to work? In case she needed to draw blood!
If u guys ever tell my jokes to someone, pls tell me how they react.
@Humanoid Clay. I’m think A, but I would like it to pan to June at some point.
@ImuyanMangoCat drawing, mostly. I draw before I go to sleep and I’m trying to get a full digital piece done every weekend (they’re not that complex, they take like 3-4 hours max).
@Humanoid Clay I would say June cause I’m most interested in what she’s doing, and would provide a very different perspective as she’s just a civilian, but I would say that the Kendal – Tynan POV would make the most sense.
ImuyanMangoCat ooooh I actually have a couple hobbies! First off, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE READING!!! Give me a good book and a comfy nook and I will love you for the rest of my life. Second I like to write (mostly fantasy/drama/romance/lgbtqia+ novels and poetry) and I have a bunch of stories I started but never finished because my biggest issue is with continuing stories cos I have very little self confidence and I’m terrified of showing others my writing for fear of being looked at differently or judged. Third I love cooking and feeding others because giving others things I’ve created is mt way of showing love and caring. And fourth I love to sew, especially as a way to wind down at night. I’ve recently gotten into tailoring/customizing dresses to make them fit better and look better because I love dresses and I want to wear stuff I feel comfortable in, and I love adding my own touch to things. I also love just spending quality time with people close to me and enjoying time with them because I’m a huge extrovert and my love languages (receiving) are definitely quality time and words of affirmation. And then obviously I love commenting on this story and other comics because the people and community are so nice (especially here)
Humanoid Clay lol everyone’s picking a and that was actually my choice!
LoeTheFox oh wow that’s really impressive! I can’t draw, I much prefer writing so it’s so cool to meet artists and see their beautiful art!
Ell, I want to do much, much worse, believe me. He’s a certified ASSHOLE (lmao the autocorrect said asexual and I said “hell no, I’m not letting that d!ck in the ace community thank you very much, we’re misunderstood, misrepresented and mistreated enough!)
@Hiii. Ooh! I love reading too! I forgot to add it though. My whole house is bled dry of new reading material, and for some reason adults in my family have stopped giving me books as Christmas presents, so I haven’t been doing that much reading lately.
I recently read the hunger games tho, but I didn’t rlly enjoy it.
I know Ebooks exist, but they don’t smell as a good, and it’s hard finding a stable reading platform that won’t lag every page you turn.
Bluefire:
Most of these fun facts were based around random things I half-remembered, the insect still moving even with their heads cut off was from a video about ants and in it they fed them a superworm with the head crushed, and yet it was still moving. (Ps: what kind carnivorous plants do you own? I always found it interesting the adaptations those plants have came up with.)
ImuyanMangoCat:
I’m in the same position too with books, I have an interest but I’ve worked through already all the books I have, except for some books that were clearly gotten for me when I was a toddler. Other than that I run a Minecraft server for my cousins, I have a video game that I started to work on but school has left no time for it, and never really considered it a hobby but I do play chess a lot, mainly due to my grandpa who seems exited that all of his grandchildren can play, even if most of them can beat him.
At this point, most of my plants are carnivorous. I love collecting little green friends to whom all the annoying gnats can go. I haven’t ever counted my plants since the amount fluctuates with them making babies and me trying desperately to give those away, plus getting more plants too. But as of now, I have:
-flytraps (someone help me they won’t stop reproducing)
-sundews (mum loves them)
-butterworts
-tropical pitcher plants (my favorites)
-South American pitcher plants
-North American pitcher plants
-an Australian pitcher plant
-corkscrew plants
-bladderworts
Fun fact: the Australian pitcher plant is more closely related to kiwi fruit and wood sorrel than to any other kind of “pitcher plant”.
Forgot the waterwheels. They’re easy to overlook, floating amongst the moss and dirt in the bottom of my “rainforest boxes”. Which are literally large clear storage boxes with lids on them and water at the bottom.
I get here late and was like “Hooray! Bearer of common sense strikes again!” but then everyone is all about both of these people needing therapy. That’s probably true, but Falst makes a very good point. Once Kendal gets separated from Tynan he’s gonna be a mess, and while I’m not sure exactly what his plan for rock shielding is he really is hard to hurt. Plus it’s not like Alinua needs a lookout anymore.
@Bluefire oh i just love carnivorous plants; i want to get some when i move into my own home and become the mentally ill queer plant parent i was always meant to be
@Hiii I’m up for tagteaming!!! I can lend you a second clue-bat if you like! Guaranteed to cause even idiots as big as… as… as Greek Zeus, to get a clue!
Bluefire:
That’s pretty neat! I’ve never been one for gardening, and my mom is convinced she kills any plant she attempts to care for (not entirely unfounded), but I’ve often found biology quite interesting and particularly how organisms adapt to environments, and carnivory in plants is definitely a unique one. Also I agree, gnats are so annoying.
Go for it! You will not regret your extra oxygen source. Plus, they’re willing to listen to whatever rants you want to throw at them with an incredibly calm attitude.
Monkey In A Shoe:
My grandmother used to kill every plant she came into contact with but after I began lecturing her about how to grow beginner plants she’s gotten better. We can all improve, I have yet to grow any plant from seed that requires a cold winter.
Hiii:
I like to:
-write poems and stories
-not share or finish writing because fear and lack of motivation
-share handmade things with friends, my way of giving gifts
-sew plushies, mostly of prehistoric creatures
I am part of a carnivorous plant club, it’s where I get most of my plants. If you’re looking for carnivorous plants, you might want to seek out such a club near you and get plants (+ advice to grow them) from those people. Most garden centers have a pretty sickly/ poorly cared for and small selection around where I am anyway. There are some specialty places though.
What’s interesting is this could be Primordial Life’s way of saying to Alinua that Life does not use her or command her. A few chapters ago, right before the melon wall, she said, “Enough.” That speech box had two indicator tails, possibly implying that Life and Alinua were speaking as one. Back in chapter three, the same double speech tails occur. So, what this says to me is that Life wants Alinua to protect and help, not as life’s champion, but as Alinua.
Jesus chri- BOTH OF YOU! THERAPY! NOW!!
Oh how i adore line repetition
Also, anyone gonna make the paper beats rock joke? just me? okay…
A: “I’m going to heroically sacrifice myself to save these people”
F: “well I’m going to heroically sacrifice myself to save you”
A: “oh no your not”
F: “oh yes I am”
Dang! Falst has hutsp!
all of this glow is gorgeous :0
@SerifStones, and rock beats paper factory but lion beats rock.
wow! all those self-sacrificing behaviors are really showing, guys. might want to tone it down a bit
If only we had a Stone Mage present. What do you think are the odds Shrike will get involved?
Branches all around.
Falst will not leave her behind.
Keep the rocks away.
(Bonus)
“Ok, how much self
sacrifice do you want in
today’s update?” “Yes.”
The bold Falst, he came rushing
He had no fear in his heart,
And lit by green he pledged to shield
Alinua from the mountain she tore apart.
Also, the green lighting effect is incredible. That is art right there.
@HelloHaiku:
Reminds me of the anime trope…
“How many special effects you want? Yes.”
“Where’s the special effects budget gone?! Yes.”
@SerifStones
Team to team mom: Do we have to?
[riiiing, riiiiing]
“Hello, Tahraim speaking?”
“Yes, did you have a free moment after your last appointment? I know a couple people who could use your particular sort of wisdom. Or tempering. However you like to view it.”
“I’ll think about it.”
Alinua: “i can afford to threaten my own life, because the primordial deity using me as a vessel won’t let me die, since i’m too important a tool for them”
Falst: “we’re both just combat-based functions, and even then i’m quite a useless one”

Tess: “i’m probably tough enough to take down most things, so i will just fling myself into danger with alarming speed and awesome style”
can Tahraim help them all, please?
TL;DR: “what were you thinking?”
“I wasn’t!”
But really. There is value to planning ahead.
Wow it’s really like self sacrificial behavior was given out like Oprah giving out cars. “You get self sacrificial behavior! And you get self sacrificial behavior! Everyone gets self sacrificial behavior!!”
Jeez and I thought Falst was the only one with a decently healthy mindset, this entire group needs therapy.
Therapy, now. Both of you.
*Sigh* And the “You aren’t my puppet” explanation never crosses her mind. Somebody get the entire squad into therapy.
STOP IT BOTH OF YOU
Yeah, gods. They ALL need therapy.
@athroughzdude
Actually, yeah. What pushed Falst to do this?
@veggiesnake
This sums it up really well.
In fact, seeing this, I vote to replace Falst with Tess in the role of ‘Common Sense Person’.
Also, just…wow.
WHY DO NONE OF THEM HAVE SELF-PRESERVATION?!
THIS ISN’T HEALTHY YOU TWO

Monkey In A Shoe:
Addendum:
Forgot the waterwheels. They’re easy to overlook, floating amongst the moss and dirt in the bottom of my “rainforest boxes”. Which are literally large clear storage boxes with lids on them and water at the bottom.
@ ImuyanMangoCat Like apperantly everyone here, I like drawing, but my main hobbies are reading and playing D&D and Magic the Gathering.
flast: agry self sacrifice
Alinua: NO
I get here late and was like “Hooray!
Veggiesnake:
It’s strange, these coincidences.
Veggiesnake:
I am part of a carnivorous plant club, it’s where I get most of my plants. If you’re looking for carnivorous plants, you might want to seek out such a club near you and get plants (+ advice to grow them) from those people. Most garden centers have a pretty sickly/ poorly cared for and small selection around where I am anyway. There are some specialty places though.
A lot more artists in the comments than I expected
@Monkey in a Shoe.
Is the channel you mentioned called antscanada? If not, I recommend him. There’s a lot of fascinating ant stuff on there.
@Bluefire cool! i definitely will look into that
What’s interesting is this could be Primordial Life’s way of saying to Alinua that Life does not use her or command her.
